I've had a proper wee swither over this star rating. I'd say really a 3.5, but it's not quite hitting the 4 spot for me at the moment! I visited here a long while ago with a friend on a nice sunny day when it was pretty quiet and had the most amazing scrambled eggs (not hard to go wrong there, but really good ones are rare!) and enjoyed it, though there wasn't all that much of any kind of ambiance so it didn't hit me with any memorable ''I must come back here'' response. Anyway. I visited here again due to proximity a week or so back with my boss after we'd been to a meeting nearby. The overall verdict is that the food is pretty nice (I opted for a salad this time round, it was delicious!) but the company is what's gonna make your visit to Hemma cause the ambiance is still fairly M.I.A. It's like a very nice clean white canvas to paint your own stuff on really. I basically ate my salad in silence other than speaking to the waitress (who was lovely by the way) given that my boss is not the greatest conversationalist and that there was nothing else really going on. And sadly there was no cocktail for me this time, but I can report with confidence that the coffee is a spiffing good cup of java! Not at all bad, but lacking that little bit of sum'in to make it great as yet! read more

Great spot right next to Moray House and Rockstar North. Great breakfast options, I recommend the French toast with bananas. Great hangout for students and the price is reasonable. Have not been here yet for dinner, but lunch and breakfast are good! read more

This place has a nice atmosphere. They allow dogs inside, which is great for dog owners. Service was okay, a little slow. You have to go to the bar and pour your own water if that is what you choose to drink. I had the veggie burger with fries. The burger seemed to be a combination of veggies and lentils served on an artisan bun. Burger was flavorful and fries were crispy. Overall, I had a good experience. They should serve water at the tables. read more

As bars go, this place isn't particually revolutionary. Good wine. Check. Decent food. Check. Admirable choice of beers and spirits. Check. The Tun doesn't do anything new or radical but for what it does do, it does it well. Obviously set up to tap into the market of thirsty, bedraggled politicians and journalists at nearby Holyrood Parliament and The Scotsman Newspaper HQ, this place relies on it's consistantly high standard of service to keep a hold of said regulars. Tall glass walls, comfy leather sofa's and a mix of modern and classic pop songs is what you can expect here.The usual bar food suspects prop themselves up alongside a menu of pasta dishes and salads, all carefully prepared in a small kitchen which prides itself on delivering decent grub and quickly. The Tun also plays host to a large function bar on its Mezzanine level that can cater to parties of up to 250. A rareity in many pubs these days but definitely worth mentioning is the fact this place has clean toliets! Just a small reminder that they have their priorities in the right places. Nothing earth shattering but a great venue for a post-work drink and gossip. read more

Have tried various items of the menu, and all have been great. Decent portion sizes and quality ingredients. Atmosphere is usually pretty good, in pleasant and laid-back surroundings. Only downside is that some of the staff have been a bit...off on occasion, and sometimes come across a bit rude. On the whole though, the service is okay. read more

We ran into this place when it was raining away from the tourist restaurants in Old Town. The atmosphere of the place was laid back and comforted us immediately. We ordered a soup, the baked fish, and the Swedish meatballs. Service was good and the food was fresh! The (meatballs) food was light, almost refreshing and I felt like the flavors combined really well. The meatballs were slightly dry, but that didn't take away from the quality of the meal. read more

Delighted this venue has not just reopened but been turned into a comfortable, friendly with scrummy food and drinks. Have only enjoyed a pitstop here, but the salad was massive and really tasty and I could have quite happily stayed seated in their comfy soafas til Sunday brunch rolled around. it's been many months since the rather disappointing salad i had at Hemma during a yelp brunch. last night saw me wandering back through the doors though for the inaugural meeting of the yelp knitting group. i admit i didn't have high expectations for hemma last night, but i was so impressed my immediate thought was to go home and update my review. however, my new found skill for knitting had me completing two more rows on my scarf so the review had to wait til this morning. hemma, you so got it right last night! to start with your wait staff could not have been nicer or friendlier!! i mean this was towards the end of the day for them, but they were sunny, bright, friendly, and helpful. even though we mostly ordered tea and took up an entire corner with our knitting lesson. they attentively served us but then left us to get on with the knitting only coming over to clear plates and cups aways as necessary. and your food! i got a smaller version of your greek mezze plater (which was kind of the kitchen to alter this for one person) and it was awesome! it was also still huge with lots of tasty food, a wee bit too much for me to finish. there was grilled courgettes and aubergines and a red pepper stuffed with tasty rice, and tzaziki sauce, and big slices of fresh bread, and olives over salad, and grilled haluomi cheese! it was awesome and so good and i tried hard to eat all the delicious, but sadly there was just too much. and lastly the vibe. chilled out music, lots of people chatting over drinks, and just such a cosy feel. we were there for three hours but time just flew by with such a lovely atmosphere that really helped make our knitting circle cosy and happy. so i'm definitely a hemma fan again! i may still avoid their salads, but everything else is definitely worthy of another star:) read more

Went in recently with some friends and my little boy as I have been bursting to try this place as I was always a regular at Victoria and Boda but hadnt managed to make the very short trek to Hemma! First of all I have to say the service was impeccable a warm welcome and prompt drinks service. I love the decor its cool but relaxed and theres plenty of room which was a shock because if youve been to Victoria, Sofis or Boda they are quite small and a little cramped but dont let that put you off they are still fab! A brilliant menu my husband had the burger which was immense! I had the most amazing sweet potato, asparagus, feta and cant remember what else salad but it was lush and huge the bar guy that served us actually recommended putting chorizo into it which was dare i say it again IMMENSE! i think it was the best salad I have ever eaten amazing! Drinks were prompt, food was prompt, service was more than helpful - the people I were with were a little fussy but everything was perfect when it came to the table. Loads of room and a great place to take children and they even have table football! Im sold ! read more

Went with family and friends last Sunday for a get together. We were in upstairs lounge which is spacious, but filled with drab, old furniture in what appears an attempt at " shabby chic ". It doesn't work in this modern building ! Feels like things are being done " on the cheap ". Worse still was the state of the ladies toilet. Looked like they hadn't been cleaned in months.With a minimum wipe on the top of the toilet bowl the rest of it was black with dirt ! Disgusting ! read more

As the previous reviewer has said, this isn't a revolutionary pub or bar, but it served some fantastic bangers and mash, which warmed the cockles of my heart on a cold day. The service at lunchtime was fast, the portions hearty and there's not really much more you can wish for with a lunchtime pub. read more

I've been to the Tun a few times for after-work drinks- and for that, it does the job. Reasonably priced food and drink with comfy sofas to slouch on after a hard day. read more

Had to wait for ages for just a tea and cake. Tea arrived, but the cake came a long time after. It apparently were in the oven, which made it hot and nice. I however think they should have told me I would have to wait half an hour for the cake. The rhubarb crumble didn't taste so good. The rhubarb didn't shine and the crumble was gooey. read more

Dropped in for quick lunch the other day with young Canadian friend and a pal who works at the Scottish Poetry Library nearby. Relaxed atmosphere, friendly and capable staff (corrected a minor error in one dish straightaway, without fuss) and very tasty, reasonably priced food. What's not to like or recommend? I don't understand the captious comments elsewhere. Walk down through Crichton's Close from the High Street - or find easy access on Holyrood road. I'll certainly go back next time in town. read more
