I used Helping Hearts Foundation to help with the care of my father, who passed away from lung cancer. My family and I had never dealt with a serious illness before, and were overwhelmed with the task of keeping my dad clean, safe, and comfortable in his last months of life. Having a caregiver come in to relieve & assist us for a few hours each day gave us a much needed break and time to take care of our own personal needs and sanity. We found our caregivers and the Helping Hearts staff to be compassionate and reliable. It was always our understanding that if there ever was a scheduling problem, that we were to be the back up caregivers, and this was never an issue for us. I see from another review that this might have been a concern for another family, but maybe they didn't read all of the information on their contract when they signed their agreement or if they were rushed for service, it wasn't explained clearly. The person who came to our house to assess my dad's needs was very patient & took time to answer all of our questions. She also told us that they have a housing program for the needy and the cost for the in home care services helped to fund that program. I always felt the cost for my dad's care was fair, and was actually a little less than some other companies we looked into. 6 years ago, my father had a heart attack, and they found out he also had liver disease. He spent months in the hospital undergoing treatments. When it was finally time for him to go home he wasn't able to live independently and I was unable to give him the level of care he needed. Then we found Helping Hearts and Jimmy Borgemeyer. He told me his foundation had a place for my father and me. They put him up in a nice home, and even let me live there to help take care of him. They took care of his meals, the housekeeping and other home needs so I was able to concentrate on taking care of my father. I became good friends with Jimmy and the rest of the staff and they were always there to help me and my father however they could. Jimmy and the rest of the staff became like family to us. Years later when my father finally succumb to his illness, when my world was falling apart, Jimmy sat with me by his bed, just to be there with us. I don't know what I would have done without him. I truly believe that he gave me a few extra years to be with my dad. Over the years I spent with HHF, I saw as Jimmy and HHF helped out dozens and dozens of people just like my father. People that had nowhere else to go, people that were in dire need of somewhere to turn for help. People no one would take a chance on. Whether it be the sudden death or illness of a parent, the long term illness of a loved family member. In addition to this they are a nonprofit foundation which was a plus in my opinion. The Helping Heart Foundation was of great assistance to my wife and I as her 96-year-old mother transitioned into needing full time care, became bedridden and ultimately was moved into hospice. We cared for her at our house and ultimately in her own house, as it was more conducive to the hospice situation. Without much experience we researched the available services and decided to try Helping Heart Foundation. We found them to be affordable, efficient and above all extremely flexible in scheduling. The later enabled us to create a schedule where they took up part of the care burden, allowing my wife and I to continue to care for her mother without burning out. The caregivers they provided were proficient and knowledgeable and above all seemed to really care about trying to make their patients experience as pleasant as possible. Even though we changed the requested times on a couple of occasions at quite short notice they tried to ensure that the same care giver was provided, or at least limit the number of caregivers so that my wife's mother would feel comfortable seeing a familiar person.
