I've recently been riding a bike that was passed down to me. It's an 80's road bike. Its my first time riding a bike since my old BMX bike from my middle school days. I'm in my 20s now and know absolutely zilch about bikes. My chain snapped and I brought it into the bike kitchen. I paid $10 cash for the shop fee and immediately a volunteer helped me mount up my bike and get to work. He was so welcoming and fun to work with. We evaluated whether or not my chain was salvageable, and decided we should take a few links from a chain in the back, and add it to mine. It was only $3, and from there he taught me everything about repairing a chain. He was so nice and helpful, I used the tools and he kept watch to make sure I was doing it right. Sometimes that can be stressful, but he made sure it was a fun environment and we laughed almost the whole time. I could not recommend this place more. For them, its really just about the bikes. It felt amazing to fix it myself, and learn something about my bicycle. The volunteer also helped inspect my bike to make sure nothing else needed fixing. He explained it like, "you already paid the shop fee, lets see what else we can do". I hope I learn enough to volunteer here one day. Truly a 10/10 experience. read more

Every second Saturday of the month, they host open bar nights with live music: check out their website for the artist lineup! The first one we tried was too tall, and honestly, I felt that familiar sting of "maybe this isn't for me after all." But one of their volunteers--a kind, patient gentleman--encouraged us to keep looking. No rush. No pressure. Just genuine care. Then I saw it. A white bike tucked quietly among the others. Small enough. Light enough. Possible enough. We asked how much it would cost. And they told me... it was free. Maybe to them it was just another bike. I initially came into lube my chain and get air in my tired but on further inspection my brakes, derailleur, and wheels all needed work. I paid $10 to get into the workshop where a volunteer, Bob, and I worked on the bike for around an hour going through every component. We trued the wheels, adjusted the derailleur, fixed the brake cables, lubed all the components and sent me home with a working bike. Bob showed me everything there was to know about repairing my bike so I could come in and do it myself next time I come in. Everyone in the shop was super kind and seemed to enjoy what they were doing. 10/10 experience, saved me at very least $100 and a few days that my bike would have been at a shop! read more

Apparently you can't shop while waiting for some maintenance assistance??.. weirdest interaction I've had there.

So I show up with my vintage 1973 Schwinn Varsity which hasn't been in working condintion since the late 70's. I get checked in around 9 AM and The Mechanic on duty got going without any hesitation. Problems to be addressed: Brake Cables, Derailleur Cables, chain adjustment, and other fine adjustments. Long story short, in less than a couple of hours the bike was ready to rock and roll! My basic knowledge of bikes was good enough to get the bike assembled, but the cable work was something I've never addressed before. The Kitchen had all useful tools necessary and even found some "missing" parts that were needed to get the brake calipers correctly installed. This place is the prototype necessary for any major town or city in America. Not to get political but wouldn't the world be a better place if we shared a beer, wrenched on a bike or two and took a little stroll like we were all kids again and just wanted to feel the wind at our back with that winding strip of asphalt or single trail off in the distance. We saw online that Sacramento Bicycle Kitchen was having a special promotion on Pi Day (3.14). After looking around, we found a good fit but it needed a basic tune up and cleaning. Hands down the best experience fixing my vintage 80s Peugeot bike! Mike was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable, showing me how to install the missing cable, derailleur, and replace the inner tube. TBH, I never knew there were so many details involved in designing a bike. Now, I'm beyond amazed by what a fantastic and finely crafted machine a little bike can be. Hooray! I've previously purchased a bike here and had a good experience overall. I come in today on Sunday June 2nd and this manager here, starts just ripping into people, acting rude and obnoxious and even interrupts a conversion I was having about the bikes for sale. This manager needs to be held accountable. This is the bike shop of Sacramento, no one else does it better. They believe in the recycling, repurposing, and refurbishing of bikes old and new. This all donation volunteer run nonprofit bike shop has treated me well through the years and have kept my bikes running with their discounted parts and the know how of the people that volunteer there. I was looking for a bike and found a fixie in a really good condition and a great price. They let me try it and it was love at first sight. They sell donated bikes that have been fixed/tuned up by the volunteers that work there. The inventory refreshes fast, so if you don't find anything you like, come a few days later. I came back to the store to install a new rear brake. I found the caliper, lever, cable and housing there, very affordable prices. Robert guided me during the installation and it was done pretty kick. Bobby Ray also showed me how to lubricate the chain and align it. I also brought 2 old bikes and Mike and Steve showed me how to fix the levers and tune the drivetrain. You can learn a lot about mechanics in this place if you have the right attitude. Stumbled across this place on a walk a few months ago so when I had a friend give me an old bike of hers after mine got stolen I brought it in to work on a few things I didn't have the skillset or tools for and had a superb experience all the way through. The communication of everyone involved was clear, kind, and willing despite their being busy with a line out the door to attend to before close. John worked with me to troubleshoot and repair everything I needed help with and was a total pleasure to work with. Everyone I interacted with made the space feel welcoming and their philosophy is one I have a deep appreciation for. I came into bike kitchen with a major issue that multiple bike shops had said was the death of my bike, and that I needed to buy a new one, with hel from the bike kitchen staff we fixed the issue in about an hour, only costing me the shop fee. Before you pay big $ at a commercial bicycle shop it is always worth going to bike kitchen. Once upon a time, I suffered from an injury that forced me to purchase a knee scooter. I didn't want to spend much money on one so I purchased a used one. The only thing just was wrong with it were the brakes! (Oh you know... kinda important!!! LOL) The solution was to bring it to the Sac Bike Kitchen and see if someone could help me. I learned so much about this place while I was there. It's a non-profit shop That has volunteers who work there and have parts for almost anything you need for your bicycle. You just pay a donation fee for the parts and advice. They provide a stand for your bicycle for you to work on while in their garage. They have parties once in a while as well! Anyway, the folks that volunteer at the Sac Bike Kitchen were able to replace the wires for my brakes on my knee scooter. I rolled up (haha) on my busted scooter and they helped me the same day. After my bike was stripped of its wheels, seat, and gears while I was away for a weekend, I came to SBK hoping they could make the tangle of metal I was left with rideable again. With some incredible help from Jay, Bri, and Karl (thank you thank you thank you!!!) we found the parts I needed from their extensive collection of used wheels, seats, seat poles, etc, and put my bike back together within a couple of hours. They were also great about involving me in the process and helping me learn to fix my own bike, which is a big part of SBK's philosophy. I'm a casual commuter cyclist, so while I suspect I wasn't a very helpful assistant in repairing my bike, it was great to gain some familiarity with the parts and process. Everyone I met at SBK has been extremely friendly and patient -- I'm so grateful to have discovered them in my short time in Sacramento. Every city needs more communities like this one!! read more

Super helpful. Came in looking for tube valves and caps-- inexpensive items that are surprisingly difficult to purchase (already tried at Mike's Bikes down the street). The guy pointed me to a pile of old tubes and loaned me his valve remover to start pulling whatever I needed. He even offered to let me take the caps and valves for free! I gave him a few bucks. This place fucking sucks. My bike got stolen and I called the owner for help and he denied to even look inventory. Then proceeded to tell me even if they did have my bike they most likely sold it. The experience was incredibly sketchy and he implied that he doesn't even care if he sold my bike. If this is any indication how the business is run I can bet that they get stolen bikes a lot and sell them regardless. Trash customer service and I feel bad for others who are looking for their stolen bike. There's a reason the prices are so "affordable" people. read more

Fantastic non profit here! Hidden with foliage it's easy to miss. It's connected to a little parking lot right before the train tracks. I've been wanting to get a bike and I've heard great things from friends. Not only are they volunteer-based, but also they have classes and bike rides they coordinate. I did not end up getting a used bike today. The only one in my size was a very high-end Trek bike that's too fancy for my needs. Everyone was so friendly and very knowledgeable. Their used bike inventory changes frequently so I may head on back over to see if they have something that better suits me. A good place to go if you have any questions you need answered. I came here last month in search for a bike that I could use to get around/for fun. I came to this location because I was recommended by multiple people and I wanted to support a local business. So far I have had nothing but issues with this bike - I understand that my knowledge of bikes is basic at best and yes I know it's used, but I was not told exactly how poor this bike's condition was. No matter how much I tighten the bike seat and handle bars they still shift out of place as I ride, which can be scary. The chain also doesn't shift properly sometimes. To be honest I didn't feel welcome when I entered the store and the man who helped me said this was the only bike he could sell me because I'm short even though he didn't even show me any other bikes unless I asked. He didn't even let me test ride it or anything... I know I probably should've been more firm and asked more questions as a buyer, but as a customer I didn't feel like I was being helped thoroughly. I don't know if they just accept anyone's bike or fix the bikes themselves, but it would've been nice to have been told of these issues before purchasing, because of course they don't accept refunds. So now I'm stuck with this bike, but hopefully I can make the best of this situation because I desperately need a bike for transportation. Hope this review was helpful. read more

Total man cave. Most volunteers are wonderful and very helpful, however it only takes a couple of dickwads to ruin the BK. Talking smack about members of the cycling community when others can hear, making women feel unwelcome and unwanted, and a general air of male entitlement have ruined this experience for me. This is a complete departure from my first experience in 2009, where the volunteers were happy to be there - and happy you were there, too. I'll take my money to a shop where I can be treated with respect. "Volunteer" doesn't necessarily have to mean complete asswipe. If I had really big tits and were 20 years younger, the service I'm certain would have been completely different. Hats off, BK, you've set the human race back 50 years. read more

Earlier this year, I bought an affordable and mechanically working bike from This & That, which I love. It'd been a few months since I bought my bike and I noticed that it needed some light tune ups. A co-worker recommended the shop and it had awesome reviews, so I thought I'd stop by. One of the people fixing up their bikes was really helpful and directed me to go the front desk. I proceeded to describe what was going on with my bike, so I could get some help as to what tools I needed. The person working that day was unhelpful, patronizing, and a real creep. He made comments about what I was wearing, looking at me up and down - and told me this isn't a shop "where you can just drop off your bike and have someone do it for you." I told him I do it myself (I was well aware of the self-help structure of the shop before I visited). After meeting the attendant, I definitely did not feel comfortable staying to fix my bike there. I'm sorry to have to leave this review as I've heard wonderful things about the shop. The concept and the service this shop provides to the community is laudable, but I certainly will not be returning and will make sure my friends don't go here for their biking needs either. read more

By the looks of me, you'd think: girlie. And you'd be 75 percent right. However, what you don't know is that I am 20 percent MacGyver, builder, inventor, and bug collector (OK, it's been awhile on that last one). While I might not be entirely successful at all of these dimensions, the heart is there. So this weekend I decided to get good and greasy, and begin the process of bike lift. (That's like face lift.) I have been struggling with the aesthetics and functionality of my ride and determined this weekend was as good as any. First order of business: seat lift. Um, yeah an ass lift if you will. Because I was lacking parts to adjust my seat, I rode my low rider over to the Kitchen, where I knew with 20 percent of my heart -- the MacGyver part, I belonged. The other 80 percent thought I might get snotty looks for wearing a romper instead of proper bike fixing attire -- whatever that is. I arrived hot and sweaty to the open-arm oasis of volunteers, allen wrenches, bolts, lock washers and nuts of every shape and size. In fact, I'm pretty sure the volunteers out numbered the customers. I will admit, I was a little nervous. I love trying new stuff, partly because of and partly despite the trepidation of embarking on foreign territory. I mean, here I was in tool-land and if left to my own devices, I'm sure I could have torn that joint up, but in the presence of such mechanical greatness, I had a small douchebag* moment. The Kitchen has bike racks, kind of like mechanic shops have car lifts, and they are rather intimidating. The head volunteer said, "Just go ahead and put your bike on the rack." I took one look at this thing -- this jaw with comfuddled clamps and holes and said, "Oh, no that's OK, I won't need to do that. I can just fix it like this." He said, "you should really put it up there. It will make it easier." Or something to that effect. I'm pretty sure I pretended not to hear him and scurried away with another volunteer to the screw section. I'm sorry head volunteer guy. Your bike rack just scared the shit out of me. However, I think you sensed my fear, because when I returned, there was my bike, up on the rack. :) Now, my seat is fixed and my ride is golden. (Literally, because I painted it gold, which was kind of unintentional and you *might* be able to tell it wasn't done by a professional ... but hey, I'm only 5 percent painter.) *According to trusted yelper, David O, a douchebag is simply one who will save face at virtually whatever cost. What an awesome and unique way to contribute to the community. The Bike Kitchen is a non-profit that does a world of good for the many folks like myself who use bikes to cruise the downtown grid, and they do it for cheap while teaching long-lasting skills. For a pittance ($30), I rode away on a junker that had been completely refurbished with a lot of love and care. Why spend $700 on a new bike to cruise around town on and invite thieves to steal? Now I have something that I won't lose sleep over or have to put a lot of effort into. They stayed open a little late on a Friday so I could buy this beauty! They said that for $5 they have mechanics on hand to teach you how to repair your bike, so with the miles my baby has I may be back soon.
