My previous review was a first impressions look at the food bank, and now that I have gone several times, I can say that I have some updated information on their treatment of those with disabilities. I have added one additional star bringing them to five stars in my book now that I have a good sense of how it works. Although it is not publicized, they do allow the people with disabilities to line up toward the front. You can sit in the cafeteria area and wait for the disabled line to start going through - there is no need to try and squeeze in with the rest of the people in the traditional line. On going through the line, often they will have someone to help you with your boxes or bags to a cart. Sometimes someone will be able to help you take your cart to your car. You can take a cart out to your car, and usually someone will be assigned to retrieve carts. Just start to take the cart back and someone should come and grab it from you so that you do not have to make the long walk to the food bank from the parking lot. As far as disabilities go, you still need to be able to walk from your car to the food bank, which is about a block and a half. If you can do that, they will help you as much as they can and let you go first in line. Please read my previous review to get a sense of the food bank itself for those who are new or thinking of going. This is an excellent food bank with really nice people and fast service. They often offer a lot of good produce that is in great shape in addition to their great normal selection of food and bread.

The food is pretty good considering it's what most stores are throwing out I know what the people in back sift thru just to get the good stuff that they do. It's hard on them to get stuff that's good when they have lots of bad stuff to go thru and that's not all about of the time supply is the issue. They can't supply people with what they need if they don't receive it as a donation due to what little grants they receive. Helping hands deserves to get more I volunteer 6 days a week 7 to 8 hour days driving delivery and warehouse work. But could not get hired cuz they don't have the money to hire more people. That's why they rely on volunteers but they are hard to come by due to the many hours they are needed and the ton of work they are needed to do. It's a GREAT HELP TO SEDRO-WOOLLEY, MOUNT VERNON, BURLINGTON, AND OTHER LOCAL CITIES HERE IN SKAGIT COUNTIES!!!!! EVEN WITH THE SHORTAGE OF VOLUNTEERS THAT HELP OUT EVERYDAY!!!! If you need other things such as information on where to get a shower or where as a runaway teen can go or a shelter church that takes in families. This is a review of the Anacortes Salvation Army's food bank service. They have many other services…read moreas well as church functions, but the food bank is the only one I've ever had experience with. It is open Mondays and Wednesdays from 1-3:45. You can come once a month. You can go in for bread, I believe, as often as you need. First, I would like to say that I really appreciate the people and the service provided at the food bank. They really help people who are down on their luck, so to speak, and need a helping hand to get back on their feet. The way the food bank works is first, you have to sign up. You do this by bringing in IDs and address verification (a piece of mail, for example) for everyone in the household. If you have children, bring in their birth certificates. The good thing is that once you are in their system, you stay in their system even if you do not go for a year here and there. It is all computerized. After you sign up, you come in and take a number from the table in the middle of the room and wait to be called. Once called, you sit down with the intake specialist who will ask you whether you need toilet paper, a bar of soap, dog or cat food, and anything else specific. They try to meet specific needs if they have it in the back. Once your order is taken, you go back and sit down (yes, there are lots of chairs) and wait for your name to be called by the workers in the back. They will roll your groceries out on a cart that you can use to take the food to your car. The Salvation Army is very disability friendly with chairs and carts to help people who can't stand very long or carry things very far. While you wait to have your number or your name called, you can browse the bread and produce in the front room and take as much as you need. There is usually a free table as well that has odd things on it or expired things that need to go right away. The Anacortes Salvation Army gets an A+ for helping persons in need with food and for providing a disability friendly environment. The workers are very kind and compassionate, make eye contact, and smile. I highly recommend their services to supplement your food if you find yourself in an emergency.

Their selection of items is increasing, and the store is still clean and well organized. There were plenty of staff on duty on the busy day we visited, and the line moved fast. My only issue is the lighting is really bad here - they use LED lighting which is hung much too high, so most of the store appears dark and gloomy. Still, based on yesterday's visit I'll definitely return for another visit when I'm in Sedro and in a thrifting mood.

They also hand out some food and toiletries once a month. Just get in line and you get the necessities. The Boutique is also a treasure for more quality items. Priced very reasonable.

They have a…read morelittle bit of everything - from clothing to kitchen items to crafts to books - and most of it is pretty reasonably priced, too. The shop is well organized and there seems to be a good turnover of items. I visit whenever I'm in La Conner (about once every month or two) and I rarely see the same items sitting for too long. The staff (who I think are all volunteers) are always helpful and friendly, too. They're quick to offer assistance, wrap up a breakable item, or answer a question. On my most recent visit, which was yesterday, I was excited to see they had some nice Christmas items in stock - including a Christmas 50% off table, and even some beautiful 1980s era Christmas china. I've always wanted a whole set of Christmas china, but had to resist the temptation to buy it. Should have grabbed a pic as it was quite lovely!
