We've known of Helmut's for years, stopping in the Kelowna location to grab stuff on our way back to the lower mainland. On our way to Tappen with empty stomachs we stopped at their Vernon location for a sandwich. Both craving BLT's the lovely K, thanks to Yelp saw that they had that offering. We pulled in, parked, and entered the store. It's always a treat to go in as the store is well stocked, well lit and always clean. The young man that helped us at the counter was courteous and informed us of the soups that were available that day. Borscht I think might be a staple here, and the other offering was Mulligatawny, which we have made at home. Our soup and sandwiches ordered with the choice of back, or side bacon, we went to the bistro area to await our lunch. Prior to stepping away however our bacon was cut fresh from the side. Who does that? Needless to say our sandwiches and soup were delicious, and from the looks of it we weren't the only ones that have discovered this gem. Another redo while in Kelowna or Vernon? We had a wonderful late lunch at Helmut's in Vernon. The sandwiches and soup were delicious and home-made. The staff were so helpful and accommodating. After lunch we spent about $75 in the deli and had some of the best meats, sausage rolls and pepperoni sticks we've ever had! My only complaint is that they're so far away from where we live! Helmut's is our go to place for sausage and lunch whenever we are visiting my sister in Vernon. It's not only because I am a oompah loving (non German speaking) German but because they have damn good food! Pretty much anything you buy here is good. This last visit I bought some bratwurst for our backyard fire cookout while my sister bought the chicken sriracha sausage. Both were amazing! I also bought a fresh pretzel which I devoured in a dark corner of her basement and probably the best apple fritter I've eaten in my life. We almost drove back for another when we realized how good it was. We also had lunch and I'll admit that was a bit disappointing and the reason for the three stars. Ordering is confusing. I'm not sure if you do it at the meat counter or the cash register or if you pay for food before or after you eat. The borscht we ordered was really good and satisfying, but the sandwiches were just 'meh' (I had the crispy chicken sandwich while my sister had the roasted turkey panini). The main menu board says the sides come with the sandwiches but they charge separately for them so that you can only get a sandwich if you want (but they didn't tell us this). On a previous lunch visit I had the Thuringer bratwurst and was completely satisfied with it. Oh and my sister says they have amazing wedge fries. read more

Great choice for lunch during our 10 day road trip through BC & Alberta. The borscht was the best ever with bonus of meat & potatoes. Perfect temperature. Hubby had a Thuringer Bratwurst in a bun and really enjoyed the flavour. Nice bar stool tables in the corner, out of the way of busy shoppers. Easy access to really clean washrooms. Store provided ample selection of condiments, jams, sauces, and dry goods, mostly of European brands. The focal point of the store is the gigantic meats, sausages, etc in the display cases. Wish we lived in Vernon - we'd shop here every week for sure. read more

I went into Helmut's Sausage kitchen for the first time a few days ago. I love that there are no preservatives in their meats. And it's great for my friends that need Gluten free food, practically everything there is!! I stayed for a lunch, I had a delicious sandwich and some wedges and a nice hot bowl of soup. Everything was so tasty if I would have been able to eat it all I would have gone for seconds. Really nice place! And the staff were so friendly and full of great information! read more

Like so many other Butchers and Bakers from Europe their sausages are by far superior to what one finds in Germany today. Our Community band did Oktoberfest fundraisers for many years and had Helmut's Bavarian Bratwurst year after year with great success. Thanx, Helmut and crew! read more
