The bakery case full of cookies, pastries, and muffins.

What a find! This warm, homey oasis of culinary delights is a farm-to-fork restaurant bakery tucked away in the small town of McMillan, MI. Today's breakfast special was a Belgian Waffle with fresh fruit and bacon. The bacon is smoked, extra thick, and crispy. For someone with a smaller breakfast appetite, we tried the Breakfast Banana Split with a drizzle of Maple Syrup. It's just how you'd imagine it: a split banana with Greek yogurt, granola, fresh berries, a few dollops of sweet whipped cream. Coffee here is locally roasted. With its light notes, it's equally enjoyed sipping alone and with the entire meal. Breakfast was so good we parlayed our luck into ordering lunch. Two pasties with gravy and a pulled pork sandwich with fries. Later in the day we visited Kitch-iti-kipi and had lunch. We were very glad we planned ahead. The bakery is heaven on earth. Fresh bread, like my mom used to make when I was a kid on the farm. Cookies, pastries, turnovers, brownies, sticky buns -- oh, my!!

Imagine my joy pulling up to the warm, welcoming glow and smell of Helmer House after an hour's drive in the pitch black country night. I reserved a room here before my big UP trip this fall. I love going for the authentic bed and breakfast vibe. Little did I know, their lodging was directly part of their restaurant. Adding to that country feel is a small shop attached for all of your fishing needs. I stayed in the Shadowbox room. It's a tiny space with room really only for the bed and the small dresser. A little bedside table would be a good addition. It stayed plenty warm in the night - honestly too warm for me. No issues with noise - a very relaxed stay. My bathroom was separate from the room and normally shared with another room. It was clean and well adorned. Only complaint is the water seem to only run hot. I enjoyed a "pasty" for breakfast at the restaurant and took an old-fashioned donut for the road. I would absolutely come back to both stay and eat.

The food was wonderful! The pancakes are so light, fluffy, and HUGE. Bacon is thick cut and tasty. Bread is homemade and fresh. The service was fantastic. The ambiance was so inviting. If you're looking for a great breakfast in the area, this will not disappoint. They have loaves of bread packaged, as well as a case of cinnamon rolls, pecan rolls, brownies, and other yummy treats that they can package to go.

We found this little place during an ice fishing trip to the UP. On day one we ordered pasties to go and received not only delicious meat and veggie filled pasties but coleslaw and a delicious oat and fruit bar. On day two, we had the special New Years Eve dinner of pork medallions with a mushroom sauce etc. Wow, this to go food had a lot of flavor, a fresh salad and bread pudding for dessert ! On day 3, we stopped to get donuts on our way out. The donuts are only available on Friday and Saturday. Now that's a donut! I will be back!!

The energy of this home is incredibly peaceful. Many Inn keepers make you feel at home, but Tom and Carol make you truly feel like family. As I said before my wife and I stay at a lot of B&B's. We never stay in the same place more than once. We love to experience a new place each time. But this is our third stay here on our 10 day vacation in the UP. We kept coming back because we seriously missed this place, Tom, Carol, and of course Zeke their super well behaved and friendly dog. There is so much more here than just their beautiful home, the calming awe of their land, their incredibly friendly sheep, the acres and acres of trails they have on their land, the nice added touch of the sauna on the back porch, the wide open sky perfect for star gazing you usually get from the UP combine with being on a large acred farm, and of course Zeke! Carol and Tom are the heart and soul of this place. They are what make this house, a home. I could go on and on about how much we valued our stay. But like I said, I can not express enough how great this place is. To give you an idea of how much we love this place, my wife and I drove from Eagle Harbor to stay here one more night. Staying here will be one of the best memories of your trip.

Yup, telephone lines got taken down and all Newberry turned out for the show. Thirty years later Frank's and Cheryl's labor of love allows visitors a glimpse into the world of Newberry's lumber boom. Breakfast was tasty - peaches & cream french toast was good, but the sausage was different - not sure what kind of meat, but hubby and I didn't care for it. (Eggs with feta and spinach the first morning was fine, no meat that time.) The showers were a horrible experience. We stayed for 2 nights in the suite. Morning 1, the rain head shower in our suite trickled. Water only trickled out of half of the shower head. After several minutes (probably 5), it got hot, but then it was scalding hot and there was no way to cool it off. I turned the handle all the way to cold, and even waited - no change. Scalding hot. A guest in the single room with the bath down the hall was finished with his bathroom, so he offered his shower to us. We accepted (although I find it kind of icky to share with a stranger, I was desperate for a shower!). His shower was slightly more than a trickle, but certainly no pressure. I was able to regulate the temperature. I took a super quick shower and was done with it. Day 2 my hubby went to use the shower down the hall and came back un-showered. No pressure at all in there on this day. So I ended up washing my hair, shaving my legs, etc. in our bathroom sink (very shallow) and he attempted the trickling rain head in our shower. It was a joint effort. When the water became scalding, he had me turn on the hot in the sink (so less hot went into the shower). We adjusted that way a couple times and he was finished. Cheryl said they had a pressure regulator on order and she hopes that fixes the problem. The first day, her response was that the water issue was a "mystery." Our suite was also equipped with a 2 person jacuzzi tub, which is the reason I chose the suite in the first place. When we arrived, she showed us our room and the tub and said it's just a soaking tub now because the jets don't work. There was never any mention of this when I booked (I emailed, and had 3 phone conversations with them before we arrived). She did take off $20/night for the shower inconvenience, which I appreciated. I would give the place another try if I was assured the water was working, but I don't think I'm brave enough to get that far from home and find out we have no shower options!

Pros - Super quaint. Everything is antique-like, from the room decor settings to the breakfast china. Not in an old way however. It felt like we were in an English or French B&B. - We stayed in the Suite room, which had a large sitting room and old claw-foot bathtub. Would recommend that if it's available, but all the rooms looked nice. - Lots of lounging room around the house... sunroom, library, etc. - Location is great. 1 hour to Munising, Grand Marais, St Ignace, etc. Great for day tripping. - Breakfast is really good. The hosts are great. Prices are reasonable (noted on their website). The whole house and grounds are super pretty. Potential Cons - No Wifi at the moment, and AT&T coverage is bad. But you're in the UP, you didn't come here to look at your laptop, did you? - They don't take CCs, so bring cash or check to pay. - Mostly 2-prong outlets, so bring a converter if you need it. Would absolutely recommend. We'd rebook in an instant on our next trip there.
