    Coconut Shrimp Dinner
    Rose S.

Staying a town over in Newberry and we were looking for a place to eat dinner when we got into town. Not wanting the typical bar food or pizza, I started looking around for somewhere local with good fish. I found Chamberlin's and called to make a reservation based off recommendations. I would call ahead and make reservations because they do get very busy and the restaurant isn't very big. Also, you cannot book a table/walk-in after 8:30 because they close at 10. Walking up, the house is beautiful and has a front wrap around porch facing Lake Manistique. Porch dining is available in warmer months, or you can wait outside when it's busy and enjoy the porch swing with beautiful views. You can also stay at the Inn, which I will look into next trip! First night we came, I ordered the Cajun Whitefish. Very delicious! I also tried the stuffed whitefish my friend ordered and I liked it more. I also tried the French onion soup, and we got the Brie appetizer. Second night we came back, I tried the Michigan Cherry Pork chops and my friend tried the Coconut Jumbo Shrimp. We started off with the garlic cheese bread topped with fresh made bruschetta. I also ordered the clam chowder as the soup dujour. Everything was fantastic! The pace of meal was great, views are beautiful and the staff and owners are all friendly. We enjoyed our trip up the UP and will definitely be back on our next visit.

We stumbled upon Chamberlin's Inn this past labor day weekend after a windy damp day at Seney Wildlife Refuge. By the time we reached Chamberlin's there was a light cold rain. The inn was packed and the tables were not far enough apart for our taste. It was so cozy looking, but since we are in the middle of Covid, we chose to eat out side on their lovely porch. The hostess didn't bat an eye, and our waitress, who must have been just as cold as we were, went above and beyond. Their porch has a lovely lake view. From this view we saw one of the most vibrant rainbows ever when the rain let up. Then less than five minutes a bald eagle flew by. We were awed. We enjoyed some lovely local micro-craft beers. For dinner my husband and I shared their french onion soup, a fabulous Greek salad and a chicken salad sandwich. Everything was well made. We look forward to visiting Chamerlin's Inn and eating inside when the threat of Covid passes. It truly is a charming little place with wonderful food and service.

What a hidden treasure! The word quaint comes to mind immediately. Very beautiful Inn and a very beautiful restaurant. High quality, high, end, menu options, as well as sandwiches and salads. And let's talk about the incredible view of the lake, WOW!

I ate dinner here one night and stayed at the inn for two nights. I'll start with dinner: I highly recommend the cedar plank whitefish. At my table, 3/4 of us ordered this dish, and we're glad it was available! The fresh green beans were cooked perfectly, and the potatoes are piped onto the plank. The whitefish itself is tender and flavorful. My only regret was that I ate too much of the tasty baked brie, raspberry, and apple appetizer and couldn't finish my whitefish. We had a reservation on this busy night, and meal service was slow, but this restaurant has the best dinner in town. Concerning our stay, our room was great! We had room 8, which has a private bathroom and jacuzzi. The jacuzzi was clean and it worked! The room was clean, tidy, and old-fashioned. The main color was a soft pink, which was good for the ambiance. You can view a little bit of each room on their website. There is no air conditioning in the room. In the mornings and evenings, the temperature is fine. If you are there in the middle of the day, it can get warm inside. There is a fan in the window and bug screens on all the windows, so you can open them without worry. There was a ceiling fan in the bedroom and a ceiling fan in the bathroom. The ceilings were high, and there was good air circulation overall. There was a small TV in the room, which we didn't feel the need to turn on, and plenty of power outlets for your electronics. It felt like I was staying in a good friend's home. Breakfast is served every day to those staying at the end. We stayed two days, and we had two different breakfasts. You could choose from the meal they offered, but that was the only food available. You could order a large variety of juices to drink along with what you would normally expect to drink at breakfast. The first breakfast we had was eggs, hash browns, toast with butter and jam, and sausage. The next breakfast was a spinach, tomato and cheese omelette with bacon and an English muffin. It is served freshly made and by waitstaff, so please bring a few dollars for a friendly tip. Outside was awesome! The view of Lake Manistique was lovely and romantic. I loved to sit on the expansive back porch in an antique rocking chair and take in the scene. You could take your drinks from the bar outside if you so desired. The owner likes to sit on the back porch too, and he was friendly and good to talk to. I completely LOVED my stay, and I am definitely coming back! I made a couple of purchases from the small gift shop on the way out, including a photo card to mail to my family.

Looks like a sort of typical lake restaurant when you drive up but the food, service, and setting are all great surprises.

Built in the late 1800's as a railroad hotel and moved by logs and horses to its current location in the 1920's, the Chamberlin Inn is one of those places you feel like the second you walk in the door. Our group of three stayed here for two nights while dogsledding at nearby Natures Kennel, which we scheduled and purchased as part of a package deal through the Inn. Our package included lodging, dogsledding and a $25 certificate for dinner at the Inn. My room was on the third floor of the huge Inn with a queen sized bed and private bathroom with a stand up shower. Electric baseboard heaters with separate thermostats were in the bedroom and the bathroom, so I was able to keep my bedroom cold and the bathroom hot. A bonus; a box fan and two ceiling fans were in my room, so on went the fans and away went the noise from outside my room, which wasn't much at all. The real action at the Inn happens downstairs on the first floor. A nice and inviting fireplace with 4 comfy chairs sits waiting for guests. The bar sits on the opposite side of the first floor with 10 or so seats where locals sit drinking beer and sharing stories. The yard out back by the lake makes a perfect parking lot for snowmobiles, and that seems to be the preferred method of transportation for those who stop in. The rest of the downstairs is the dining room. The dinner menu contains delicious choices like escargot and feta as appetizers and whitefish and Michigan cherry pork for entrees. Several nightly specials were available the two nights we were there that included prime rib prepared a different way each night. The first night I went for the prime rib special and could only eat about a quarter of it. Thankfully the fridge in the back had enough room for my leftovers! The second night I went for the Cajun Whitefish. Again, I could only eat about half and the rest went in the fridge in the back. Absolutely delicious! Breakfast each morning was chosen for us and was outstanding. Day 1 was a breakfast skillet that included potatoes, broccoli, sausage, eggs and cheese. Day 2 was sausage and scrambled eggs with cinnamon French toast. Just like dinner, after a few bites and I was full, but it was hard to stop myself. The Inn is a quiet place on the lake, and I suspect it's just as amazing in the summertime. Perhaps I'll have to check it out for myself when the lake thaws and the grass greens.

The energy of this home is incredibly peaceful. Many Inn keepers make you feel at home, but Tom and Carol make you truly feel like family. As I said before my wife and I stay at a lot of B&B's. We never stay in the same place more than once. We love to experience a new place each time. But this is our third stay here on our 10 day vacation in the UP. We kept coming back because we seriously missed this place, Tom, Carol, and of course Zeke their super well behaved and friendly dog. There is so much more here than just their beautiful home, the calming awe of their land, their incredibly friendly sheep, the acres and acres of trails they have on their land, the nice added touch of the sauna on the back porch, the wide open sky perfect for star gazing you usually get from the UP combine with being on a large acred farm, and of course Zeke! Carol and Tom are the heart and soul of this place. They are what make this house, a home. I could go on and on about how much we valued our stay. But like I said, I can not express enough how great this place is. To give you an idea of how much we love this place, my wife and I drove from Eagle Harbor to stay here one more night. Staying here will be one of the best memories of your trip.

Breakfast was tasty - peaches & cream french toast was good, but the sausage was different - not sure what kind of meat, but hubby and I didn't care for it. (Eggs with feta and spinach the first morning was fine, no meat that time.) The showers were a horrible experience. We stayed for 2 nights in the suite. Morning 1, the rain head shower in our suite trickled. Water only trickled out of half of the shower head. After several minutes (probably 5), it got hot, but then it was scalding hot and there was no way to cool it off. I turned the handle all the way to cold, and even waited - no change. Scalding hot. A guest in the single room with the bath down the hall was finished with his bathroom, so he offered his shower to us. We accepted (although I find it kind of icky to share with a stranger, I was desperate for a shower!). His shower was slightly more than a trickle, but certainly no pressure. I was able to regulate the temperature. I took a super quick shower and was done with it. Day 2 my hubby went to use the shower down the hall and came back un-showered. No pressure at all in there on this day. So I ended up washing my hair, shaving my legs, etc. in our bathroom sink (very shallow) and he attempted the trickling rain head in our shower. It was a joint effort. When the water became scalding, he had me turn on the hot in the sink (so less hot went into the shower). We adjusted that way a couple times and he was finished. Cheryl said they had a pressure regulator on order and she hopes that fixes the problem. The first day, her response was that the water issue was a "mystery." Our suite was also equipped with a 2 person jacuzzi tub, which is the reason I chose the suite in the first place. When we arrived, she showed us our room and the tub and said it's just a soaking tub now because the jets don't work. There was never any mention of this when I booked (I emailed, and had 3 phone conversations with them before we arrived). She did take off $20/night for the shower inconvenience, which I appreciated. I would give the place another try if I was assured the water was working, but I don't think I'm brave enough to get that far from home and find out we have no shower options!
