The location is unbeatable--right next to the pier and lighthouse, offering a private beach, incredible sunset views, and an unobstructed spot to watch the July 4th fireworks right from our cabin. The cabins themselves were great, though my only minor critique is that the shower is a small square box and quite tight for someone close to 6 feet tall (making it tough to bend down), though it became manageable by day two. To top it all off, there is a restaurant right next door with great breakfast both mornings, delicious brisket, and wonderful service. Yup, telephone lines got taken down and all Newberry turned out for the show. Thirty years later Frank's and Cheryl's labor of love allows visitors a glimpse into the world of Newberry's lumber boom. Morning 1, the rain head shower in our suite trickled. Water only trickled out of half of the shower head. After several minutes (probably 5), it got hot, but then it was scalding hot and there was no way to cool it off. I turned the handle all the way to cold, and even waited - no change. Scalding hot. A guest in the single room with the bath down the hall was finished with his bathroom, so he offered his shower to us. We accepted (although I find it kind of icky to share with a stranger, I was desperate for a shower!). His shower was slightly more than a trickle, but certainly no pressure. I was able to regulate the temperature. I took a super quick shower and was done with it. Day 2 my hubby went to use the shower down the hall and came back un-showered. No pressure at all in there on this day. So I ended up washing my hair, shaving my legs, etc. in our bathroom sink (very shallow) and he attempted the trickling rain head in our shower. It was a joint effort. When the water became scalding, he had me turn on the hot in the sink (so less hot went into the shower). We adjusted that way a couple times and he was finished. Cheryl said they had a pressure regulator on order and she hopes that fixes the problem. The first day, her response was that the water issue was a "mystery." Our suite was also equipped with a 2 person jacuzzi tub, which is the reason I chose the suite in the first place. When we arrived, she showed us our room and the tub and said it's just a soaking tub now because the jets don't work. There was never any mention of this when I booked (I emailed, and had 3 phone conversations with them before we arrived). She did take off $20/night for the shower inconvenience,which I appreciated. I would give the place another try if I was assured the water was working, but I don't think I'm brave enough to get that far from home and find out we have no shower options!

I quickly fell in love with the resort and all it has to offer. This is a rustic cabin U.P. getaway that encourages its guests to share their week with each other. It offers children to run free safely to enjoy the beach, Rec Hall, playground or docks (not to mention nightly scooter rides.) The prices are fair, the number of people that rebook for the next year is unheard of and fellow "campers" become family. If you're able to get a cabin year after year for a week during the best weather months for the U.P., you are very lucky. Oh, and the sunsets! This is a family vacation! Family owned, family friendly and family focused. My kids love it here and we will never miss a summer trip to Birch Shores. As a footnote, when I proposed to my wife (way back in Feb 2004), I knew she love BSR so much, I turned my apartment into a virtual Birch Shores. Several hundred pounds of sand, "Lake Manistique" (okay, just a kiddie pool with fake fish), chase lounges and all. This is her favorite place on earth and wanted it to be a part of this big moment. That's the kind of resort this is.

But if a quiet, clean, no-frills cottage retreat sounds like a good vacation base camp, you can do a lot worse than Woods. Michigan has a lot of small, older rental cabin resorts and these vary widely in the level of maintainence they receive. Woods stands up very well among these. The interior is spartan but clean and doesn't show a lot of obvious wear and tear. The bathroom was clean, though quite small. The hot water supply was a bit limited--after one of us showered, it took quite a while before there was enough for the other. There wasn't much counter space in the kitchen area, and the gas stove had basically two settings--full blast and slightly less than full blast. Not a great problem if all you need to do is heat something up, but if you need to simmer something for a while or pan fry anything, there's a high risk you'll scorch it. All that said, the inconveniences we encountered in the cabin certainly didn't put a damper on the trip. It was a satisfactory place to sleep, eat, and wash. And the view of Lake Superior out the window and direct access to the beach compensated for any shortcomings at Woods. There was a stairway directly behind our cabin leading down to a boardwalk over a marshy area between the cabins and the beach. It took about five minute to walk to the water, but the walk itself was pleasant. The beach is open to the public, but was far less crowded than the beaches right in Grand Marais. So, I'll give three stars for the cabin itself, five for the view and general setting, for a four-star overall rating.
