I was introduced to BSR by my wife that has been coming since she was born (1975) and her family has been coming since the late 50's. I quickly fell in love with the resort and all it has to offer. This is a rustic cabin U.P. getaway that encourages its guests to share their week with each other. It offers children to run free safely to enjoy the beach, Rec Hall, playground or docks (not to mention nightly scooter rides.) The prices are fair, the number of people that rebook for the next year is unheard of and fellow "campers" become family. If you're able to get a cabin year after year for a week during the best weather months for the U.P., you are very lucky. Oh, and the sunsets! This is a family vacation! Family owned, family friendly and family focused. My kids love it here and we will never miss a summer trip to Birch Shores. As a footnote, when I proposed to my wife (way back in Feb 2004), I knew she love BSR so much, I turned my apartment into a virtual Birch Shores. Several hundred pounds of sand, "Lake Manistique" (okay, just a kiddie pool with fake fish), chase lounges and all. This is her favorite place on earth and wanted it to be a part of this big moment. I am sorry that I have to do this but this only applies to the motel units. I would give the full cabins 2 stars. This review is for anyone using this as a Should I Stay Here guide. No. I have been to Birch Shores probably 20 times over my lifetime. It has never been a 5 star resort nor do I think that is the intent. However, the cleanliness of the motel units (which is all that was available during my stay) was really unacceptable. I had two separate units and my brother had one unit. We both had horrible experiences. One of the units had a pair of underwear in them upon check in, one had a broken toilet that they "fixed" three times (one being 11:00 pm) and one had a broken shower. I mean I completely understand what the expectations are for a "motel" and I had those expectations but these motel units did not even meet my low standards going in. Sorry :(. I do have to add that the rest of my family stayed in a full cabin and LOVE it and go every year and have been for over 40 years. I would go back again and stay in a full cabin only if my kids wanted to. They had a blast and thought it was better than some of the camps they had been to. Oh, and there is wifi (paid) that is only accessible at the beach. Not in cabins. Not really useful. read more

Me and my family took a trip and it was a memorial trip for all of our family who have passed away so it was a pretty decent-sized group and it was all bikers. we absolutely love this Resort the views were outstanding! it was Peaceful, it was perfect in every way. the rooms suited everybody to a tee. It had everything. Badass rec room with a fireplace and a bunch of other stuff. A playground, boats, docks, a huge platform out in the water and some how we got our hands on a huge slide we put in the water!volleyball net..etc... the owners are so nice. we didn't think that they were very used to dealing with such a big group of people let alone Rowdy bikers.we were pretty loud and after a few warnings they gave up and did everything to accommodate us.a huuuggee storm was coming and he had everyone put their Harley's away in this huge like rec Hall thing.it felt like home away from home it was amazing every single one of us said so. I never wanted to leave...i will be taking my own family up there for a family vacation sometime in the next couple years I can't wait to go back to my spiritual home. read more

I must offer a strong rebuttal to the review written by Colleen H. about Birch Shores Resort: I have been traveling to this lovely place yearly since I was 8 weeks old--I am now 53. For more than 60 years, my family have called this our 'northern home' and I can envision no time in my life--or in the lives of my children--when that will not be so. I have, over that time, stayed in virtually every motel unit and cabin available here and I have always arrived to spotlessly clean and welcoming surroundings and have never had cause to register any such complaints as Colleen suggests. Yes, occasionally something breaks down, as it does in every home and in any other establishment, including so-called "4 Star Hotels--we have all had those experiences with any place that has plumbing, lights, heat and water. The Resort was conceived as a family-friendly, quiet and hospitable place of woods and water, friendly faces, peaceful ease and a lot of simple good fun--it is not intended as a luxury getaway but as a place to relax and enjoy all the surrounding beauty of this wondrous peninsula, "Above the Bridge" with one's family and friends, or, as I often do, for a time of quiet solitude and reflection. I spent my childhood vacations here, as have my children and it is that sense of unchanging continuity that brings my family--and so many others--back here year after year, a fact noted in Colleen's own review. There are few places and situations in our modern lives where we can truly revisit childhood memories in such a visceral way--the fact that the Bitely family has maintained this place true to its original conception is a testament to the values of place and family rarely seen anywhere today. I count on their continued steady and loving stewardship for my grandchildren and feel it almost a shared legacy that I will be proud to hand down to them. As I write, I am sitting in motel unit #14--the very units complained about in Colleen's review, using my laptop with absolutely perfect wi fi that works every time. As a writer, I rarely arrive here without my computer and use it frequently. Having stayed in every one of these motel units at some time or other in recent years, I have always been delighted with the wi fi reception in them although it is true that it doesn't work as well in some parts of the Resort as it does here but since Colleen's complaints were confined to the motel units, obviously, I am having a very different experience. It clearly works just fine and isn't it a wonderful thing indeed to be able to use wi fi on the beach? I've posted many a fine picture of the unsurpassed sunsets that are a nightly delight to my Facebook profile due to that fine amenity. When I arrived here, two nights ago, very late, I walked into a clean and comfortable space, the lights on, fresh and neatly folded towels in the bathroom, crisp, fresh sheets on the bed--I felt entirely welcomed and immediately comfortable and I am having a wonderful time. Birch Shores Resort is a unique and beautiful place that I would highly recommend to anyone seeking peace, calm, friendly people and beautiful surroundings---rustic and down to earth? Absolutely. Delightful? Very much so. I give Birch Shores my highest rating of not "4 Stars" but 5 ***** read more

My wife, two girls and I found this place last minute, driving by after a horrible first night at a different cabin. Jay, the owner, went above and beyond to accommodate us which turned our disaster of a vacation into great memories with my family and I could not be more thankful. That isn't the only reason for 5 stars though. There's a lot to do there and if you get bored it's your own fault! We walked through one of the cabins but stayed in one of the motel units. The cabins have the rustic look and feel about them that I personally love. The motel unit we stayed in (#12) really does need some attention but Still felt very comfortable. The owners and staff are some of the best people you can meet and what you get for the money is so much more then expected. We have already booked again for next year and yes, I would recommend birch shores to anyone heading up north. read more

I have to ditto what Michelle W. wrote. We absolutely love going to Birch Shores Resort. We have been going every single summer for years. Everyone is treated like family there. The family that owns Birch Shores are the nicest people and greet us with a hug and give us a hug when we have to leave at the end of the week. The kids love the extra things that they do. On Mondays there is a hot dog roast on the beach, Friday night ice cream social and there are nightly rides in the 4 wheeling truck for the kids. They come running from everywhere for that. The cabins are very clean and are bug free. Which in the U.P. is a huge thing! You have a gorgeous view of the lake from every cabin. A great way to end the day is to go down to the beach and watch the sunset over the lake, enjoy the warmth of a fire and meet new people. I highly recommend Birch Shores if you want a homey atmosphere! read more

Birch Shores is the perfect up north spot if you're looking for a place where the kids can play in the sand and swim all day long. Fishing and boating and sunning and total relaxation for the adults are what we look forward to every year and have done so for the past 28 years.
