This place was just a great as described by others. The cozy log cabin feel was so inviting. Our room was clean and homey - such a pleasure to discover after arriving in the middle of the night. There's a real sense of personal charm - even family members of the owner who run the restaurant next door. So much better than any chain motel we stayed in on our trip. The restaurant serves the UP favorite - pasties. I totally recommend this place for travelers looking for a great deal and a warm atmosphere.

The owner came out and met our 70 pound labradoodle and after a minute was very welcoming. Not sure if we could have brought one much bigger, but ours is gentle and affectionate, so I imagine the combination of big but soft tempered was good enough. At any rate, I'd happily spend a night here again. Only gave them 4 stars because one window was missing a screen and we couldn't get wifi from our cabin. I'm guessing that cabin 5 wouldn't get real great Wi-Fi signal either based on observations made while walking around. Its also kind of a hassle that they only take cash/check, but they do make you aware of this when you make reservations. The beds arent the most comfortable, but I sleep pretty easily wherever I am. The entire property is pretty gorgeous. We didn't use the kayaks or boats but they appeared to be in decent shape. We used the firepit and there was firewood provided. The screened in porch was very nice to have for drinking the morning coffee and listening to nature. I'd definitely go back!

The cabins have gas powered heat, water, and basic electricity but there are no TVs and no great luxuries. The cabins are spacious and comfortable and 3/4 have great views of Little Lake while the 4th is more tucked away in the woods (a short walk to the beach still). I quickly fell in love with the resort and all it has to offer. This is a rustic cabin U.P. getaway that encourages its guests to share their week with each other. It offers children to run free safely to enjoy the beach, Rec Hall, playground or docks (not to mention nightly scooter rides.) The prices are fair, the number of people that rebook for the next year is unheard of and fellow "campers" become family. If you're able to get a cabin year after year for a week during the best weather months for the U.P., you are very lucky. Oh, and the sunsets! This is a family vacation! Family owned, family friendly and family focused. My kids love it here and we will never miss a summer trip to Birch Shores. As a footnote, when I proposed to my wife (way back in Feb 2004), I knew she love BSR so much, I turned my apartment into a virtual Birch Shores. Several hundred pounds of sand, "Lake Manistique" (okay, just a kiddie pool with fake fish), chase lounges and all. This is her favorite place on earth and wanted it to be a part of this big moment. This place is no frills! No coffee pot in the room. No telephone even to call the front desk -- you have to walk over. Struggled to find an outlet to charge the phone. The bed was definitely not great. It wiggled and jiggled like it was an air bed on springs. The desk person didn't seem to have a clue as to where we could find a place to eat.
