Hell's Kitchen is one of those places where you walk in expecting a total dive and get a gem instead. The bartenders are really amicable and the atmosphere is casual, yet fun. We had previously been to other wine bars and were unimpressed with Australian wine until venturing into Hell's Kitchen. Who knew? I dug the red decor and the IKEA chandeliers. I'd always wondered about this place. It's kinda romantic up here- looking out onto the other windows in the narrow lane way, like a forgotten back lane of post war Europe somewhere. Across the view, there was people working away in kitchens, and through frosty windows it adds mystery and disguise. There's a building immediately opposite, a bit like windows into others' lives. It's a nice loft view I was at hells during the day for a quick pit stop sandwich. The style that's super yummy, and even comes with chips on the side and a whole pickle on top . Plus all the items on the menu have cool names. Didn't inquire about drinks though, but they have mountain goat products on tap, which is good. It'd be interesting to see this place at night. By day it's removed from the business of life and a good spot to eat. read more

I initially though that this place was a bar simply called Hell Upstairs, but it turns out that the downstairs is a part of this place as well, and it is actually called Hell's Kitchen. Well, I've only been to the upstairs part because it is a really cool bar hidden away is a grungy little alleyway, which I have to admit gives this place an awful lot of character. I haven't been here as much as I like, but they do have beers on tap, and when I came here it wasn't overtly crowded. Mind you it is pretty dark up here, but that simply adds to the ambience of the place. They also have some benches along the windows so you can look out on the alley below. I'm going to have to come and check out the lower area sometime because I di quite like this place. read more

Loved this place! What a little gem. I didn't know Centre Place isn't Degreaves St so was a bit lost, but headed up a staircase past the kegs and ended up in a cozy, cool bar looking over a bustling alley. The way the windows sit over the alley it has an old style Japanese machi feel but not deliberately so. Not heaps of seating but enough little corners to have a quiet conversation over a cheeky pint. I think on a different night it could get busy with a different, but equally cool vibe. The bar staff were friendly and accommodating. I didn't really suss the drinks menu but for me it was all about the awesome location and the atmosphere. Definitely my kind of place. A total find. Can't wait to go back! read more

If you've got friends from out of town that you want to give a little taste of Melbourne laneway life over a beer or a glass, Hell's is the best. Everything about Hell's Kitchen screams understated excellence. From the signage, complete with devil face and slogan 'When you're hot, you're hot', to the minimalist decor (black leather-backed chairs and bench seats), to the Centre Place location (not to be confused with the adjacent, and overtly middle-class Degraves Lane), to the stripped drink selection, they've just got this place right and that's why it endures. Hell's is always rammed on a Friday after work and is a favourite of those with a nose for the good shit in the ocean of suits that is the CBD. There's no drunken secretary table dancing here, and it's the better for it. They have the usual lager choices on tap, but they also pour a couple of great local ales for the beer heads out there. Other highlights are the in-house infused vodkas -- you can actually see the chillis and stuff floating in there. They don't relly do food, but they do allow you to order from a nearby Thai place and eat in. They're just good like that yo. read more

It does get kinda hot up in Hell's Kitchen on a summer evening, but the smell of sweat almost adds to the experience. I've never been to Hell's in the day time, so I've never had the food - for me, Hell's is all about drinking and hedonism which is how it should be! If you're with a large group it can be tricky to find room for everyone to sit together, but I had a fun night once when we split into sub-groups and played musical chairs all night, swapping between the tables all night. On that same night the music was solid gold - they pulled out classic stadium rock and hair metal that totally went off - but on other visits the music has been a lot safer. A shame, really, since anything involving Tommy Lee instantly evokes good times and sin. I've reviewed a few bars that are great to bring your mum to, but if it's night time, keep her away from Hell's - there's nothing mumsy about it which is why it's so fun. read more

Cobble stone paths and tight alleys.... Am I in Europe??? I've always heard Melbourne is like a European copy, and I have an obsession with Paris so naturally I was very ecstatic to explore these alleyway restaurants. I was definitely not disappointed as I found exactly what I was looking for! This restaurant is situated in one of these alleyways where there is literally something going on everywhere around you. They are queues for all the restaurants and cafes here, that it was almost hard to make a decision to find a place, but my friends and I settled on Hell's Kitchen. Just as a disclaimer, the name has no relation to Gordon Ramsay's show! The place is quite charming as you go up a long flight of stairs and the restaurant is not that large; however, that intimate and closed feel makes it very cozy and comfortable. I ordered the half sandwich (Hell's special) and the soup of the day (pumpkin) and both were absolutely delicious! The sandwich has a kick to it at the end that just makes it amazing and the pumpkin soup's creaminess and rich flavors really balances out that kick from the sandwich. My only comment about the food is that the portion size was a little smaller than I would've liked. But of course, no dining experience is complete without a dessert! The best part of this restaurant experience are the rum balls! They are quite something as it's sweet and tarty flavor go very well together - don't worry though, you won't get drunk off of these. read more

One of my fave hangouts in the city. Word of warning for those who haven't been - it's a typical Melbourne venue, located down an alley and up some almost obscure stairs so don't try and fnd it after a few too many! A simple chic-grunge bar, they serve longnecks, simple yet delicious food and will whip up a cocktail on request. Their playlist on a Saturday night will almost certainly appeal to any 30 something Melburnian. Definitely a good after work hang out, or place to chill with friends where it's not too noisy, busy or expensive. read more

Hell's kitchen seems to have a loyal following of locals and a sassy bar tender who isn't afraid to kick punters out if they lay a finger on the record player (yes vinyl). Fun times. They don't have a great variety of beers, but maybe they're better know for cocktails, which I didn't indulge in. Maybe I'm getting old, but for a place with no dance floor they play their tunes WAY too loud - like I have to yell at you loud. Hell's kitchen is a really nice, casual bar, that's the perfect place for afternoon drinks with a small group of friends. It has a really decent wine selection, but my favourite thing about Hell's is the snack menu. They offer platters of delicious bread, cheeses and dips, olives, corned beef, and a bunch more. The food, though simple, is delicious. At night on Fridays and Saturdays it gets pretty crowded and can be a little claustrophobic, but if you can manage to secure a table, you'll be set for a nice night. read more

This cozy lunch venue is brilliant for a quick bite to eat during the day and an equally enjoyable afternoon drink, however, since having expanded upward in 1999 Hell's Kitchen has begun to suffer from the same problem many Melbourne venues have tackled over years, that of pretension. Despite the menu remaining great and varied, the cliental seem to become less and less quaint as the years go by, with those interested in being trendy consuming what little remains of the venues charm. This said the beers are roughly the same price as most other Melbourne venues, a little expensive but reasonable, and the food remains of great quality and value. Try it once and if it work for you return; its well worth the visit. read more

My friends took me out for a pre birthday dinner last May 4 at the Ceasar's Palace location in Vegas. We did not have a reservation that night & we were initially denied a table but one of my friends managed to convince one of the staff & we got in. Marina, our server was very efficient, friendly & accommodating. Dining experience was superb, foods excellent, no words to describe how good it was. We ordered the same foods twice! Excellent people-watching overlooking the Desgraves pedestrian cafe alley. We had a drink and caught up with an old friend for an enjoyable hour. The cocktails are wildly expensive for my Yankee blood, but the beer was reasonably priced and the selection was solid. Service was very mildly attentive, but friendly and pleasant. read more
