Bronx County Hall Of Justice - A separate security line for Jurors.

My whole month of May was stolen from me, not by the continuous cloud producing showers that stayed…read morein the forecast...but by the civic obligation to serve Grand Jury Duty. Grand Jury Duty is different from Trail Jury Duty and it seems to be virtually no way to escape it if you're called, unless you have a felony conviction on your record. No judgement here just giving you a heads up. So be prepared to forfeit 4 weeks of your regular routine for a new one 4 days a week. If I'm honest I was kick'n & screaming like many of us do, when we are called to serve but it wasn't exactly that bad. I mean it can be boring as heck with all the down time. It is like watching paint dry or plucking every hair on your body one by one. Alright, that may be a little extreme but be prepared nonetheless. I used the opportunity to catch up on some much needed reading to help stimulate some brain cells. For the 4 wks you are required to report @ 9am and stay to the close of business which doesn't necessarily mean 5pm. It is until you are dismissed which means it could be before 5 or some times after. You are required to go thru security every time you enter the building and as a Juror you are allowed to enter with food and beverages. If you are serving as a Grand Juror you have access to a refrigerator and microwave. Security moves pretty quickly with the exception of Mondays & Wednesdays when the line can be out the door so arrive early. Everyone including the Court Officers are generally polite and actually nice. When it finally comes to an end you realize it is not actually that bad and you provided some input in our Judicial system. Just A Note: They provide $7 parking vouchers to park at the shopping center across the street which reduces the cost from $25 to $18. My suggestion is 4 days a week for 4 weeks, $18 adds up so only drive if necessary.

It was just the two days and then you are sent back. I had a nice time eating at some of the local spots in my 2 days here. I had not had some Dominican food in such a long time. It hit the spot and for only $5.00 it kept me smiling. In the city , this same meal would've cost me like $8.50. Overall, this is a nice new building. AC was working very well and kept everyone cool. It did feel like slow death only you finish the newspaper and other random things. You are just standing here staring at the these strangers faces.

Savoy Ballroom Plaque - Leonard Harper's Revue at the Savoy Ballroom

The Savoy Ballroom was a vast space with a 10,000-foot dance floor spanning a whole block on Lenox Ave. Savoy Manager Charles Buchanan's wife, Bessie, had previously danced in Harper's chorus lines in his nightclub productions. Buchanan hired Harper to produce revues in the ballroom without thinking about it. Harper brought in a chorus line calling the girls the Savoyettes. They worked out numbers with Harriet Calloway and Alex Jackson's Cincinnati Plantation Band. Collectively, they created a sizzling new revue that played two shows nightly on Thursday and Saturday. Harper thought he had created a perfect match made in syncopation heaven because the Savoy Ballroom was known as the home of dance lovers. Harper said, "Give people what they want when they want it." This statement would backfire and kick him in his ass.

The ballroom no longer exists, but there is a plaque marking its historic significance. I can't believe this ballroom took up a whole city block! It existed from 1926 to 1958. It housed two bandstands back to back so when one band would go on break, the other would start up. Benny Goodman and Chick Webb had a famous 'Battle of the Bands' here. Many jazz legends such as Count Basie and Ella Fitzgerald performed the night away. Even though this structure no longer exists, I can feel the presence of the 'Happy Feet' that once danced on this site. I can imagine the grandness that once stood. Sooo much history on this city block. I am glad there is a memorial plaque to commemorate this special place. It was unveiled by two of Whitey's Lindy Hoppers (the elite lindy hop troupe that came to be), Frankie Manning and Norma Miller on May 26, 2002.

This is the pretty awesome highway, and a pretty embarrassing fact is that when I used to drive on it when I was a teenager, I used to actually think it was the Maj Deegan (because it's signposted that way for brevity, but not for Abbrevaty because it doesn't have herpes), and I'm not sure who Maj is, but I thought it was some kind of a sub-continental Indian name or Pakistani name, rather than what I assume is an Irish name. I was always happy that they had named such a multicultural city highway with an obviously multicultural name, only to find out that it was - as another review said - a white guy, which is predictable but was slightly disappointing. Nevertheless it's okay and it's a good highway that when it's not too busy will whisk you through the Bronx and through the counties north of New York City without much trouble, but when it get's jammed up it can be really bad, and watch out for some huge potholes along here.

This highway has it all! From potholes to constant MAJOR construction, this is the highway! They have been attempting to fix this for years, and it really doesn't do anything to the traffic flow... The best way to fix traffic flow in the Bronx is just make the entire Bronx 1 gigantic highway... Seriously, I drive like 4 miles on this in the morning and the afternoon.... I do not recommend it to anyone... The morning it takes 20 minutes, and the afternoon about an hour... There is no avoiding it for me... All in all, it is a terrible highway that is way too small, adn all the fixes that they do to it haven't solved any of the problems yet... So come and enjoy!
