Located at the entrance of Prospect Park, is this stunning landmark and plaza. It is a large 19th-century Civil War monument. On Saturdays there is a farmers market . It is the second largest in New York City It has a large selection of fresh produce, meats, farm-fresh eggs, local dairy, honey, and a large variety of fresh plants and flowers. It can get pretty hectic, but definitely worth visiting. read more

The original name was prospect park Plaza and in 1926 was renamed grand army Plaza for the 60th anniversary of the fraternal group of former union soldiers. Called the army of the republic. It was designed to shield the noise from the city away from the park. I would've given 4 stars because of the dangerous and confusing adjoining roadway I have tried to navigate on foot and in a vehicle. But today 4/13/26 hizzoner the mayor has announced a redesign of this space for more public space .looking forward to this landmark redesign. read more

Originally my friend wanted to go to Times Sqaure to spend NYE there but I did the whole yellow legal pad on the pros and cons about spending the whole day and it wasn't that great as it seems. Well after a couple of hours debating rather I should go or not, she found this plaza from her last visit and the crowd wasn't too crazy as Times Square. Y'all please take a seat. Seriously, we could sit in the yard or stand and not get trampled on. Lots of space. This place was a walking distance from the Air bnb, about a fifteen minute walk give or take, nothing too crazy to get here. Now the Grand Army statue or building was under constructions, but we still got a nice view of the fireworks in front of it and the people around us were nice and not rowdy. Just great old Brooklyn vibes, can't wait to come here again and explore more of Brooklyn. read more

Grand Army Plaza is a big gateway for Brooklyn. It's at Prospect Park's main north entrance. There's not much to do in the actual plaza. It has stuff to look at. The arch is the highlight of this. The first thing you will notice will be the arch. It's massive. This is bigger than the one in Washington Square. It's truly something to behold. The plaza itself also has some artwork to see like some statues. There's many statues of famous civil war figures who fought for the Union. It has several nearby attractions. This is a neat place, but I agree with some other reviewers that I wouldn't take a special trip. There is an impressive, large arch that memorializes the union army. The arch itself is separated from the general public by barriers because the park service is concerned about falling debris and disrepair. There is also a fountain, a JFK memorial, and it's close to the Brooklyn library, which is worth a look. Best to see this while walking or exploring the neighborhood. I got a little lost when just walking about in Brooklyn and saw this huge traffic circle up ahead and decided to go there and check it out. Memorial statues of Civil War generals and other notable people, huge plaza to walk around, take photos and I believe I saw a sign for a farmer's market that is held here. This is located at Prospect Park and it's nice to walk around and take a break from exploring the city and just enjoy the view and some history. The big glass apartment looking building next to the plaza is the Grand Army Plaza Condos/Apartments on sale between $3M - $5M in case browsing turns into buying. As a kid during the summer, I called this place my own. My mom used to take us here during the week to keep us busy. No video games, just the park. Imagine that! My grandmother would always say this was once the most beautiful neighborhood. During the 70s, it was really bad here. Drug deals and crimes at night made this place scary. Now? Not only is it right across the street from Prospect Park, and the Brooklyn Library, but it is also 5-10min walking distances from the Brooklyn Museum and Botanical Garden. I like to ride a citiBike through Grand Army Plaza during the summer when the water fountain is actually turned on. Beware that sometimes the water in the fountain is turned off and a dry water fountain is never captivating. Nonetheless, rest assured that you will be amazed my the architecture surrounding Grand Army Plaza. It's like a piece of Paris architecture was plopped into Brooklyn. Towering over this circle is a grand memorial arch to Union soldiers who fought in the Civil War. I've been here a few times. First time was last summer. Very nice park. I stopped here with my then-boyfriend on our way to the Botanical Garden. The architecture of the plaza is amazing. There are so many great things to see here. If you're in the area, grab a New York hot dog (if it's cold out) or an ice cream cone (if it's hot out), and take a nice stroll at this amazing park. I was here on New Year's Eve. I shouldn't reveal this cause not many people know about this, but this is the one place you want to be on New Year's eve if you don't want to stand in the cold in Times Square or pay a kidney to enter a club. Free live concert from 11pm to 1am and big fireworks at midnight. It's such a great event. My friend who lives in Brooklyn doesn't even know about this event. So mark your calendar for next New Year. read more

It was definitely "grand" to look at the area up close and see the architecture embraced with the culture. Perfect spot to take bridal pictures; just like the bride we saw yesterday. Train-wise, you can get the 2 or the 3 to get into Manhattan; otherwise, the area is pretty congested. Keep your hand on the horn, and if you keep making those left turns, you will probably get dizzy. read more

From the beauty of the Brooklyn Library, the presence of the Brooklyn Museum, and the beauty of Prospect Park, and the roadway of the tree lined and ever beautiful Eastern Parkway and in a short distance the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. The average person may not know that this all existed with just the turn of their head and a few steps in either direction. The real beauty comes alive at night when the lights illuminate the arches in a cascade of eye popping lights and mysterious glow. My husband was born in Brooklyn and this was his library where he spent much of his youth. I lived in Brooklyn both in Red Hook and Park Slope. Neither of us knew that Grand Army Plaza was now a tourist destination or a hipster hang out. We just knew it to be a library. In 1975, Grand Army Plaza became a National Historic Landmark. The area around the Arch forms the largest and busiest traffic circle in Brooklyn, being the convergence of Flatbush Avenue, Vanderbilt Avenue, Eastern Parkway, Prospect Park West, and Union Street. In decades past, the circle hosted Brooklyn's "Death-O-Meter", a sign admonishing drivers to "Slow Up" and displaying a continually updated tally of traffic accident deaths in the borough. I myself was in an accident with someone years ago at that spot who not only couldn't drive very well but also was turning around to look at those of us in the back seat and crashed with his young daughter in the car. I knew I should have never got into that car! Some people in Brooklyn aren't happy about what is being done with GAP.http://www.pps.org/great_public_spaces/one?public_place_id=941 But it it supposed to be changed and fixed soon. To get to GAP by subway- The Grand Army Plaza station (2 3 4 trains) on the IRT Eastern Parkway Line is directly adjacent to the plaza. If you are looking for a huge open space for a fair, farmer's market or a bunch of food trucks - this is the place. It has a central location - close to a couple of subways, right next to the Brooklyn Public Library, and outside of Prospect Park. The fact that it is right next to the library is key - pop in there for a good whiz or some much needed AC. The only drawback is that this plaza is kind of bare, there are no amenities to be had, it is basically just an open space without shade! But, like I said, it has it's uses. Overall, gotta love the fêtes that go on here. read more

The Soldiers' and Sailors' Arch is clearly the star of the show, a majestic and fitting entry point to Prospect Park. The American "goddess" Columbia in her chariot, atop the structure and flanked by her mighty steed, is ever-glorious. And, at night, the lights transport the plaza to somewhere far, far away from the hustles of Midtown Manhattan. And by somewhere far, far away, yes, I mean further than Brooklyn. OK, so maybe I did go a little Mosby there. Anyway, New York City is chock full of landmark architectural prowess, so it's easy to exclude what some may see as a glorified traffic circle when compiling a list of must-sees. But there's something about Grand Army Plaza that's especially enthralling to me. Perhaps it's the way it serves as a meeting point for multiple neighborhoods. Perhaps it's the way it can feel like a welcome clearing in the middle of a steel forest. Perhaps it just looks damn sexy. I went here a finale to a date and boy did I make the right decision. It was about 10pm on a Saturday night and we had just eaten dinner so this location was ideal to just sit and chat. The fountain though beautiful, traffic though slow, the air was crisp, everything was far from invisible thanks to the lights in the area. It's just a nice place to just chill. That's just the night life..the day time is something far different. Imagine having pictures taken on your wedding day over there, with the archway in your background or even the fountain. The water slightly splashing you and the wind brushing against your face/hair...perfect. This place is truly one of Brooklyn's treasures. read more

This is a must-see tourist stop in Brooklyn. So much so that if you only do one, this is my vote. GAP and neighboring Prospect Park are considered the heart of Brooklyn and contain within them a handful of impressive landmarks. The arch at the center of GAP (and the one in Manhattan's Washington Square) is designed after the classic Arc de Triomphe in Paris and contains itself a litany of historical bits. Behind it, Bailey Fountain spews water over joyful water gods and goddesses. On bits of green space flanking the main arch there are additional memorials. At 47 Plaza Street West you can see Brooklyn's own flatiron(esque) building and at One Grand Army Plaza Richard Meier's towering glass condo monolith. And of course the main branch of the Brooklyn Public Library on the East. Catching those massive, gilt-adorned doors with the setting sun upon them is magnificent. On warm weekends, they put tables and chairs out front for folks to kick back and enjoy the scenery after trolling the GAP Saturday Farmer's Market. Just blocks away is the Brooklyn Botanical Library and Brooklyn Museum (not to mention a few of my favorite neighborhood haunts). You could happily while away a lovely Brooklyn day (and several rolls of film) without straying more than a quarter of a mile from this amazing landmark. read more
