Fort Greene "is The Joint" I'm guessing my older more famous cohort Spike would say of his old stomping grounds. I took this part of the hood for granted growing up. Later learned that the tower was a memorial for our Revolutionary War fallen veterans. George Washington snuck away from the Redcoats in the middle of the fog to avoid defeat in one of the many Revolutionary W battles. Spike Lee had a store The Spike Lee Joint selling clothing hats etc from his line at the time from the 80's to I believe 90's. Tennis courts in Fort Greene Park. Also the park was the site of the gauntlet gang initiation scene in The Education of Sonny Carson. Brooklyn Tech. The Brooklyn Academy of Music, The Barclay's, Junior's, The Albee Square Food Court, and countless excellent restaurants. Oh. And don't forget the Clock which used to be one of the tallest structures in Brooklyn before the 2000's and the Chase Building that looks like something from Lord of the Rings. If you ever need to test the durability of a backpack, just spend a day at Fort Greene Park. Mine has now survived three unexpected dirt slides, one collision with an overenthusiastic golden retriever, and a near-disastrous moment where I thought I lost my sketchbook in the grass. (It was under my leg. Typical.) I originally came here to get some work done, but that plan derailed when I got distracted by a group of people practising acrobatics on the lawn. Watching someone casually flip through the air while you struggle to open a granola bar puts things in perspective. They fell a few times, laughed it off, and tried again--like failure wasn't even a thing to consider. I respect that. One day, a woman with calloused hands sat next to me and began carefully arranging leaves on the bench beside her. She sorted them by colour--deep reds, crisp yellows, tired browns--before pressing each one flat against the wood as if committing them to memory. A breeze came through and scattered her careful work, but she only smiled and started again. I almost asked what she was making, but some things don't need a final form to have meaning. Five stars. Come here if you need space to think or if you want a reminder that the world is full of people quietly working on things that matter to them. read more

This is a beautiful park, my brother and I decided to take a stroll around to enjoy the nice fall day. It was a quick train ride and we walked over to check out the park. It's a well maintained and clean park and the fall colors were beautiful. We also walked up to the memorial to check it out "The Prison Ship Martyrs' Monument is a war memorial at Fort Greene Park, in the New York City borough of Brooklyn. It commemorates more than 11,500 American prisoners of war who died in captivity aboard sixteen British prison ships during the American Revolutionary War. The remains of a small fraction of those who died on the ships are interred in a crypt beneath its base. The ships included HMS Jersey, Scorpion, Hope, Falmouth, Stromboli, Hunter, and others." On the border of the tree lined neighborhood of Clinton Hill lies Fort Greene. Not as colourful as Fort Yellow, Fort Blue or Ford Red. This is a spectacular beautiful old neighbourhood which is basically the residential area that is right next to Downtown Brooklyn. It's definitely one of the nice areas in Brooklyn to live in, but it's also extremely expensive, so that's a bit of a problem. I definitely recommend checking in, checking it out, and wandering around as I have on many occasions, and it reminds me in some ways of the Park Slope neighbourhood a little bit. read more

Such a nice neighborhood in the middle of Brooklyn! It's only a few minutes by bike from Manhattan, and the location of a lot of great schools, a wonderful park, and lots of nice brick houses. Come by on a weekend, and see all the "stoop sales" being put on by hipsters who are trying to sell their unwanted stuff. Went by one, and saw the largest 8-track collection of George Jones albums I've ever seen. There are all kinds of great stores around here, mostly neighborhood owned, locally sourced stuff. Hip! The neighborhood is anchored by Fort Greene Park, a big green park with a great monument to the Martyr's Prison Ship. The neighborhood is mostly flat, with lots of street parking. People seem to know each other to some degree around here. There's always something going on here. read more

Among the finest neighborhood in Brooklyn / New York City. Wonderful uniform brown stone architecture. The neighborhood has mostly all residential blocks with a most restaurant and cafes on Fulton street and Dekalb avenue. Fort Greene park is a pleasant if short walk with a wonderful farmers market on Saturday. Some of the best streets are near the park but there's a good side with brownstones and a side that's all tall projects and to avoid. The BAM cultural district is on the edge of the neighborhood. Food: try Romans for Italian, Miss Ada for innovative middle eastern and a nice back garden, and Emily for a good pizza. Clinton Hill is the sister neighborhood, a touch more quirky but still old architecture. Pratt college as a nice quod, open to the public, with little corners to explore. Tons of play grounds and even an parent-and-me little outdoor pool. Waking the streets you'll hear as many international accents and tongues as locals but it's not tourists - this is the diverse professional class of Fort Greene. Nothing at all hipster about this neighborhood. People who are here very much chose this neighborhood for quality of life. Subway access, when you consider Atlantic center plus C and A means basically every subway line is here - Id argue the best transport hub in the city. All three airports are about equally distant with Newark worse with traffics and La Guardia a touch closer without traffic, and JFK ok as well. The Barclays center is also on the neighborhood edge but has nothing to do with Fort Greene in style. Not much here by way of shopping except a few small gems like Safron for flowers and little gifts. Atlantic center is not a nice mall to shop. read more

You'll find everything from Soul Food to French, Italian, Caribbean, Mediterranean, South African, Cuban, Thai, Mexican, and Korean right in your own backyard. You'll also find your choice of coffee shops from chains like Connecticut Muffin to Small Business favorites that students and locals like to frequent. An up and coming area, the rent has skyrocketed since it's early days but reasonable prices still exist if you know where to look for them. An eclectic mix of people conglomerate in this enclave: students from Pratt Art School and St. Joseph's College (a private liberal arts college), the local immigrant population, young professionals and families, and wealthy newcomers eager to gain a piece of prime real estate. Fine Art Institutions such as the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) are nearby as well as art galleries and festivals (the Shakespeare Festival in the summer). There are plenty of subway stops and buses run on time. A few of my favorite things to do on the weekend include stoop sales, picnicking in the park, and jogging/walking on the Brooklyn Bridge.
