"Eastern Parkway, a 3.8 mile boulevard in Brooklyn, New York, was the first parkway in the world. Designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux between 1870 and 1874, it was intended to connect New York City to the outer boroughs and provide scenic access to Prospect Park. The parkway features a six-lane roadway, tree-lined pedestrian malls, and service roads. The section between Grand Army Plaza and Ralph Avenue was named a National Historic Landmark in 1978. " Wow! I'vce been intrigued by EP starting as a little girl driving in my daddy's car passing through on our way home. Little did I know that this beautiful tree lined stretch of land would bring such meaning to my life; starting with my first job post college in this area to present day writing this review in Brooklyn Botanic Garden. Here's my summation: E: Extends 3.8 miles across Brooklyn from east to west A: Attractions such as BBG, Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn Central Library, Prospect Park, Children's Museum S: Scenic access to Prospect Park. Amazing that two gardens are next to each other. If one exits BBG from the Children's playground, then cross the street to Prospect Park T: Transportation from 2,3,4,5 trains and B14 bus E: Events such as J'Ouvert ( West Indian Parade), Brooklyn Half Day Marathon, Brooklyn Museum hosting special exhibits R: Restaurants galore N: Nostalgia; there used to be a roller skating rink in the 1960's PARKWAY: My favorite street: Washington Avenue Favorite path: Exiting BBG at Washington Avenue to walk to Grand Army Plaza then to Bergen Street. Discoveries: I've found many hidden treasures from Washington Avenue to St. John's Place Feast: Eating on the street courtesy of Food trucks galore for "international" feasting from Middle Eastern, Mexican, Jewish and American. Flea Markets every weekend in front of Brooklyn Museum Second Lady Liberty???; Second Statue of Liberty in Brooklyn Museum Parking Lot History: Grand Army Plaza includes the Soldiers' and Sailors' Arch; the Bailey Fountain; the John F. Kennedy Monument; statues of Civil War generals Be Still: take in all the beauty of Eastern Parkway, find a spot anywhere and admire all the wonders of this special boulevard I like to compare Eastern Parkway to Champs-Élysées in Paris: the French deserved a beautiful boulevard as do Brooklynites! Eastern Parkway - Landmarks & Historical Buildings Near Me - Brooklyn, New York

Not to be confused with the Western Driveway, the Northern Gardenway, or the Southern Parka-way, which is a Russian place I guess. This is not some big major highway as you would think just from seeing the name. It's actually a thick wide grassy tree-lined greenery-straddled street that runs right through the heart of some of the best known and richest neighborhoods in Brooklyn, from the downtown area through Park Slope and many other great neighbourhoods. This road certainly has some of the best places to walk in town, and has so much along it in that I'm not surprised that everybody is giving it very high ratings. read more

Stunning. Marvelous. Spectacular. Okay, so I'm using fairly strong adjectives to describe a street (actually, a parkway) that runs through a fairly large portion of Brooklyn, but seriously - Eastern Parkway is gorgeous. Tree-lined and bike/stroller/runner/walker/schlepper friendly, Eastern Parkway is as nice to lumber along as it's cousin Ocean Parkway. There are benches to lounge on (the other day I engaged in a fantastic conversation about the book of Revelation with a homeless person on one of these benches...quite the eye-opener for a nice Jewish boy like myself) and there are some great shops, restaurants and landmarks that occupy side-streets (I'm looking at you Brooklyn Museum and Tom's!). Even if Eastern Parkway is simply a street that runs through a portion of Brooklyn, I love it, and if you spend enough time walking along this scenic treasure, you will too. read more

This is the most perfect running trail, it pretty much starts from East New York, passing through crown heights and the Jewish communities from Kingston Ave to Nostrand Ave and continuing on this path of eastern Parkway you'll eventually run into the Brooklyn museum, Brooklyn zoo, grand army plaza, and last but not least, prospect park and Flatbush Ave. I enjoy waking up and running along eastern parkway till entering the park doing miles at a time. I can't even compare Central Park to this. It's very large perfect place to workout, jog ride a bike as there are bike paths, running paths, and walk paths each lane is designated for the one in which you decide to choose. So if you go into the bike lane without a bike expect the speedos to hit you. But overall I haven't ever found a park quite as good as this besides my childhood park before it got gentrified which had a sandbox at the time, no man made rocks, not much tourist, and no extra land built over water. This was the promenade downtown Brooklyn near Brooklyn bridge and yes the actual promenade had a sandbox that was pretty huge and anyone that was an 80's baby can relate. But yeah my whole point is I go on to say and can't stress enough prospect park is my all time best and favorite park. Oh yeah I almost forgot to mention this is where the Labor Day parade begins and ends. It's not the same as it use to be though, it's more police presence than ever. The police might as well play mass and get in the streets and dance too because they have too many new rules enforced. read more

Eastern Parkway is kewwwwl. It has local roads on both sides of main - pretty nice to park here. (Except when they run some crazy events or police close whole blocks. But that besides the point.) It's green as street can be (but not as clean as it can potentially be, tho). It's has nicely paved walkways, lined with tall trees and grass patches. Subway is stone throw away. Stores, banks are aplenty. What else could you ask for from a street??? I love being here. (...I just hope I never end up here during parade...) read more

Even though I'd be a little leery of hanging out on Eastern Parkway after dusk I'm still a fan. Built in conjunction with Grand Army Plaza/Prospect Park in the mid 1800's this 2.5 mile stretch of road is the world's first "parkway". It was conceived by landscape architects Olmsted and Vaux to be a pleasure ride toward the park. Today the parkway goes the length of the Crown Heights neighborhood. Half of which is a primarily Hasidic Jewish community and half of which is downright ghetto. On either side of the parkway is a little grass and trees framing a wide biking/walking path full of benches. It may not be the quietest place to have a seat under a tree but as a street, Eastern Parkway is one of the nicest to walk/bike down and really adds a lot to the neighborhood. read more

Who knew you could give five stars to a gorgeous strip of road through a tree lined area. Anytime I drive down this road I would have never known such beautiful surroundings existed if I had not ventured into this part of Brooklyn. Come with me as I drive down Flatbush Avenue greeted by the traffic, pedestrians, and the buzz of the area. Then I take that long awaited turn as I pass by the Brooklyn Library and Brooklyn Museum. I take in everything especially my favorite aspect of Brooklyn are the statuesque and ever looming brownstones. One after the other mesmerize and capture my mind as I whiz by them and take in their beauty. Anytime I get the chance to visit Brooklyn this is the beauty I am blessed to drive down, take in, and fall in love all over again with this area. One of these days, I will take the time to walk this tree lined majestic beauty of road and really let it sink into my soul. read more

This parkway has been in my life in some way for as long as I can remember. Labor Day parades when the music and partying were the highlight and not the nonsense. Catching up with family and friends that we literally would see once a year "pon de parkwhey" Fast forward some years my sister rented an apartment on Eastern Parkway which was the family grand central station. Now I live within walking distance again and my daughters school is a hop skip away. It will continue to be a beautiful back drop to my ever changing life. read more

Every time I am up here I get Matisyahu stuck in my head... Crown Heights burnin' up all through to twilight... This is such an incredibly beautiful spot in Brooklyn. We are so so so lucky to have beautiful promenades like this in the middle of one of the most diverse and dense urban spaces in the country. The tree-lined boulevard of Eastern Parkway that careens through Crown Heights and into Prospect Heights (well, sorta Prospect Heights, that part is currently a mess of construction) or Brownsville depending on which direction you're going in (I am usually biking up the hill on Franklin Street and go left into Crown Heights towards Brownsville) is a little piece of heaven. It's also really cool because you see so many different types of people, cultures, and ethnicities coexisting as you walk or ride or sit on one of the many, many benches. And Eastern Parkway is such a busy street that it is so cool to be in the middle of nature and civilization at the same time. The homes and buildings along Eastern Parkway are also a sight to behold. The architecture, especially near Prospect Park, is breathtaking. There's so mucb life in this stretch of boulevard that you can't help but tingle with its kinetic energy. I often just ride my bike here to clear my mind and take in some positive chi. I have to admit though, the hill coming back into Crown Heights toward Prospect Heights is kinda a b! Good thing I live in BedStuy and can ride down the other side of the hill on Bedford on my way home. :D read more

I have been getting bored of running in Prospect Park lately, so I decided to spice things up this morning by running from my apartment in Prospect Heights (Washington Ave) to Crown Heights (Utica Avenue). For those who are curious, it's like 3.5 miles round trip...but the Parkway stretches all the way to East New York. I couldn't have picked a better place to run. The Parkway is set up so there are two islands in the middle---where people can bike, run, or stroll. Trees adorn the Parkway and provide ample shade. People stretch out the benches and take afternoon naps. The best part about the Parkway is that everyone is so nice. So many people were smiling at me as I ran. A few gave me some words of encouragement. I feel like when I run in Prospect Park people are more focused on running and less on taking leisurlely strolls. Thus, no one really notices anyone else, nor does anyone smile. Really pretty area to run, read a book, or socialize outside with some friends. read more

As the the saying goes, you know your from crown heights when you think eastern parkway is nature. Really nice tree lined parkway. There is a bike lane, but made from cobblestone, so be careful. There are many museums and parks along the way. As you get deeper into it, the neighborhood turns a bit rough. Enjoy the nicest parkway in New York city. read more

My first reaction when I spotted EP with its own Yelp listing was "Herm?" I suppose...as far as a tree- and bench-laden walk-thru, it's top-notch. I've never been by for the West Indian Day Parade, but it can't be beat as a vessel for crossing thru BK. read more
