I love having a pool nearby. They have a wide array of activities and advertise well in their quarterly schedules and online. My child takes swimming lessons there. The parking lot is small but there is an overflow lot right next to it. The facility has always been clean each time I've been there. I've found most of the instructors (but not all) to be very good with children and to teach in an effective manner. However, I will say that I find their system of categorizing swimmers compared with the schedule to be confusing. I've asked them to decipher it a number of times to no avail. I've given up and simply go in and have them tell me which class my child should be in and hand them money accordingly. Given the amount of public pools in Seattle, I feel fortunate to have one so close by.

Great place for doing swim meets. Here is one I did there: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2eAUpU3Yyo

Innis Arden Swim - Pool deck on a sunny day.

Innis Arden Swim

I swam for the Innis Arden youth swim team for 12 years approximately 1999-2010. Though my family…read morehad a pool membership before that time range as well and I worked at the pool until 2012. I also took part in youth water polo off and on. I started working here in Spring 2007 when I was 14 years old and worked here until August 2012, amounting to a little under 6 years, taking on various roles. Working at a pool while also using it for lap swim, rentals, open (recreation) swim, swim team, and water polo provides a well-rounded view of the pool setting. I went from cleaner to lifeguard and swim instructor to senior lifeguard and swim instructor to assistant swim coach and swim instructor. Being a cleaner, yes we even got to clean the locker rooms and wash the floors and scrub the toilets, was an eye opening experience as to the daily upkeep required in the operations and maintenance of a pool. Lifeguarding and teaching swim lessons here were more relaxed than the other pools I worked at (The Dale Turner Family YMCA and Evans Pool for the City of Seattle) and it is not one of the pools I made a rescue at. From a lifeguard perspective that is truly a testament to how well run/operated the pool is. Typically the pool is seasonal, opening in late Spring and closing closer to the end of Summer. However, this year the pool it trying some things out and expanding its open dates for lap swimming and hosting a high school swim team and a club swim team for their practices. Fun to drive past the pool in February and still see people in the pool. Fortunately Innis Arden pool is a heated pool, so even if the weather is 30 or 40 degrees Fahrenheit outside the pool remains a comparatively balmy 79-85 degrees. I have swam in non-heated pools in 30 and 40 degree weather and that is a brutal experience and takes a toll on my system. So relish the comparative luxury of a heated pool! I love the pool layout, though I cannot speak of the locker rooms/office as they have been remodeled since I worked here and my family has chosen to go without a pool membership for about a decade. Locker rooms and the office are located between the fenced pool deck and a grassy field. A parking lot extends one length and end of the pool. On the side of the pool opposite to the parking lot is the Innis Arden Clubhouse which can be used for swim-related events on occasion. The pool deck is a couple to a few inches taller than the pool water level and has a coarse-grained texture which is perfect for preventing slippage on deck especially when one is dripping wet. There was a rickety slide and a diving board when we still had a membership. When people weren't using the slide it was fun to see how long we could last with our heads under the water cascading down and off the slide. Cold water ran to coat the slide so that when we used the slide we did not get stuck to it sliding down, no swimsuit wedgie is good with me :).

The Sheridan Beach Community Club was a wonderful host for the meets I competed in at Sheridan…read moreBeach as part of the Northern Division circuit of pools (8 North Division teams, 8 South Division teams - Seattle Summer Swim League) when I competed on the youth team for Innis Arden from 1999 to 2010. Due to many cars during the meets, there was a bit of a walk to get to the pool for competitions, but not really hills to make the walk difficult. The pool deck around the pool was small, so we came with the be extra considerate mentality when swimming here because everyone was cramped. My first-ever post-season swim meet was here in 1999. It was B-Champs, a meet for those who failed to make the time cuts for prelims. I loved the pool and how fun the meet was. There was more joy on the pool deck than I later observed at the meets reserved for the fast swimmers. If there was one hook for me competing the full 12 summer seasons I did, it was that first B-Champs in 1999 for me and that I would get to swim at the Sheridan Beach pool again if I continued competing. I loved the four-lane pool. It was a unique competition environment and a tight fit in the competition space that I liked. Outside the pool deck was concessions, a large grassy area, and a playground. Our coaches encouraged us not to waste our energy playing on the playground. We found that allowed for some healthy rebellion, playing for five to ten minutes during the meets to make sure we did not lose sight of the fact we were kids. The space did not lose its magic when I became a teenager.

Yost Park - Woodpeckers at work?

Yost Park

They would walk us places for adventures during the week and Yost Park and Pool were one of the places we got to adventure. I enjoyed it then and still enjoy it now over two decades later. The pool itself is well built to be child friendly. It is in a stout 'L' shape with 25 yards in shallow to mid-depth waters. Very nice when one is young. The water as I remember it is cold, not a bad thing just a shock to the system to those who were not accustomed to it. Above the pool there are tennis courts, picnic tables, and a playground. There is also a sloped grassy area around the pool, but not one to play sports on really. I most recently visited Yost Park on Wednesday the 8th of July 2020 with my mom. Steep trails can freak her out a bit. One of the nice things about the trail system at Yost is that railings are provided in areas where the trail is steeper. Helpful in keeping one's balance and providing support while going up or down a hill. Signage along the trails provide warnings to heed especially when it is rainy and the trails can be slick as well as historical information about the park. We saw a chipmunk, a variety of birds, squirrels, and different plants on our visit last Wednesday. If driving here, make sure to check under your car before you leave so as to not run over and kill any critters who might be under it. I found a gray squirrel exploring under my car when my mom and I went to leave. Happy to wait for the little critter to continue on its way before driving off so it can live. Fun place to bond with the wildlife!

The park itself is great for exercise as several of the trails have good incline so you can get a bit of a workout. I stopped short of giving 5 stars because I have encountered screaming groups of children several times who trample the vegetation off-trail and in the dry creek bed and it is very annoying that the adults supervising them allow this. One of these groups is a nature group/school for children. I am attaching a photo I took at Yost

Sand Point Country Club

Each pool of the North Division of the Seattle Summer Swim League spurred different conversation…read moretopics when we traveled to them for swim meets when I competed on the youth team for Innis Arden (1999 to 2010). Interestingly, with Sand Point Country Club the conversation revolved around pool set-up, concessions, and human interactions. As I aged into my teenage years, I started to pick up on this more. Windows served as the barrier between the pool deck and a parking lot below, which made some people with a fear of heights slightly nauseous. So, they would sit with their backs turned to parking lot and not turn around. The line for concessions was well organized and marked off and concessions prices were decent. If I wanted to not spend too much money, I would bring most of my food/snacks from home and get one thing. Towards the end of my time on the team, the human interactions conversation was geared towards concern over upwards mobility in swimming. A couple of the other girls/women wanted to go further but did not like the tactics USA Swimming used of publicity stunt relationships where people were paired with whoever USA Swimming wanted instead of who they were really with to paint a picture of what swimming in America "should" look like. They sent off some very strong vibes of blaming country club culture, which in our summer league swimming meant Sand Point. I have encountered the "should" (also known as obligation or entitled) culture outside of swimming and Sand Point, so that was not a personal problem I had. However, it did direct conversation while here. Locker rooms were clean and would get dirtier during the swim meet, though staff still ran their locker room sweeps and stayed on top of it as best they could. The ribbons station was easy to find and tended to not get too backed up. The area around the starting blocks was not too cramped. Event numbers were displayed high up and were easy to see from across the pool. Bleacher seating was available.

The property, club house and golf course is absolutely gorgeous, excellent views and tucked away in a quiet neighborhood.
