I have male type balding along my hairline, temples and the back of my head. A couple of decades ago I had hair implants and they were great until years later when I continued to lose my own hair and the thinning along my hairline, particularly where my forehead meets the hairline became a problem. When, after menopause, my hairline at my temples began to recede and my hair also thinned, I still looked like me, but not the best me. I didn't know anything about hairpieces and didn't know anyone who had one, so I wasn't sure what to do. I'd recently read about Helena, and wigs she'd made for celebrities at the Golden Globe awards, so I called, and made an appointment. Before I came, she asked me to take five photos of my head (left, right, front, back and top) and send them. When I arrived, she offered me a wig that would cover all my hair to try on, telling me it probably wan't what I wanted, and that what I probably wanted was called a "topper" also known as a wiglet. She had styles ready to show me. The price--$1800--was more than I expected (or really wanted) to spend, but I expect it to last at least 2-3 years. A week later, mine was ready--absolutely perfectly matched to my particular shade of white hair, so much so that you can't tell where the topper ends and my own hair begins. And it's lightweight, too--half an ounce on my kitchen scale! Many reviews are as enthusiastic as mine, but some are critical of Helena's manner. I found her friendly, professionally knowledgeable and very funny. She's an artist. The topper she made me makes me look great without making me look different. I didn't ask my friends for comments, but three this week went out of their way to say I looked "great" and wondered if it was my makeup. DO NOT GO HERE!!! AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!! Only giving one star to warn others away! Helena is extremely rude! I was swayed by positive google reviews to visit but then after my visit I dug deeper and all of the negative reviews were the exact same as my experience. She seems to only care about celebrity stylists and treats everyone else horribly. I was looking for a wig due to medical hair loss. I called and made an appointment and told them the reason. When I arrived to my appointment the place was very eerie. It was obviously during open business hours but half of the lights were off and I was stuck in a back corner to try a few wigs on. I worked with Helena. The whole time she was passive aggressive to me and saying rude things. She knew I was there for medical reasons and was the opposite of compassionate. It was a distressing experience and the opposite of what I wanted in that time. Helena was not transparent about how the wig was made and the type of styling used on it and needed for upkeep. She seemed more interested in sussing out her competition by grilling me about where else I had been looking. I went with a friend for moral support and the whole time she disregarded us. It was like we and our money weren't good enough for her. It was extremely off putting. It was so opposite another experience I had that I was so confused. It has taken me months to write this review because it was just such a bad experience that I didn't want to remember it. The whole time she was shading me with what she was saying about me and my choices. The wigs she showed me were $3,600 inclusive of styling and cuts. You won't find better hair in New York City. I work as a hairstylist for celebrities, advertising, magazines, and films. I think Helena, hands down, has the best quality product and service. Shopping at Helena feels more like a collaboration than anything. She has made wigs of all lengths and colors for me. Helena is genuinely interested in providing you with the best quality finished product for your specific needs and will ask the right questions to understand what you are looking for. I've bought all types of wigs from Helena, lace front, full lace, machine sewn. They are great quality and do not shed or tangle. The hairlines on the lace fronts and full lace wigs are the most realistic I have found. A handful of her wigs that I've owned for many years have been cut and colored several times and they still look great. I'd say I've bought several hundred packs of extensions from her over the years, I've colored them, styled them, cut them, and they hold up. The ends are thick, as good extensions should be. Helena was happy to repair a wig for me when the lace ripped (from years of abuse abuse on my end). She was also able to do it while I waited. This place is definitely the best from introductory to high end pieces. Do yourself a favor and don't waste time going anywhere else. read more

I am a film hairstylist. I'm so impressed with the pieces I saw here. I will definitely be ordering from Helena. She is very knowledgeable and has great skills for color matching. And if she doesn't have your color she is an excellent colorist and will dye the piece to match. That takes ability. Trust me on this ! If you're serious about buying here and ready to put yourself in the masters hands ; you will be catered to. This isn't a wig shop you just stroll into and buy some crap wig for a party or whim. THIEVES. I purchased one set of hair extensions that cost slightly under $300. During my purchase, Helena , the owner, was completely obnoxious to me, and literally had the nerve to make fun of the hair on my head, calling it "Barbie Hair". Couple months later i was reviewing my statements to find they put one single charge through for $650. More than double what my signed credit card receipt stated. The first thing she said to me when I told her I was looking to purchase my first wig and I told her the length I wanted, she went straight to inform me on how expensive the hair is base on length and suggested that I went for something shorter without knowing anything about me other than my skin color. My hair stylist at Marie Robinson recommended I check this place out after I started chemo for BC. She was spot on. Everyone was so sweet, helpful and experienced and the wig/hair quality is fabulous. Several staff members stayed way beyond closing time to make sure my wig was perfect. It made me feel so happy when I put it on my head. It was perfect. To those of you just starting your wig research, I can say, instead of spending money on a few cheap wigs, go here and get the best of the best for a very great price point. Also, some insurances will cover the whole or partial cost of your wig if it's for medical reasons, and the folks at Helena's provide the paperwork you need to turn into your insurance. Helena is amazing! I went in with an older wig thinking I would get a repair. We decided it was time to get a new wig. Not only did Helena repair the older wig but she fitted the perfect wig and styled and colored it within and hour and a half! I've gotten so many compliments! I am so grateful to Helena for making me a beautiful wig during this difficult time while everything is closed due to COVID-19. I had heard about her from my hair stylist, and called to see if they were open and Helena was so helpful in explaining how we could do this remotely. I emailed her a photo of what my hair was like before I started losing it due to my thyroid condition. I was truly shocked to see that she had literally re-created my color, texture, hair style -- everything! She shipped it to me in only two weeks after we first spoke and I feel like myself again. I have been shopping for a long time to find a perfect top piece to add some fullness to my crown area when I am on stage. I have to say Helena nailed it. She knew EXACTLY what I needed and was quick to help me even though the store was busy. She is a no nonsense lady, and after reading the reviews, I'm glad I didn't get off on the wrong foot with her. Do not come in and expect her to be touchy-feely, however I would not call her rude! I didn't mind her direct and professional approach. She is clearly very very good at what she does. Her prices are high, but I think this is a case of you get what you pay for. Her employees were helpful and sweet. There is a good selection, and the store is comfortable, clean and well organized. Buyer beware. Bait and switch and horrible customer service. I had been experiencing hair thinning for years and had a few supplemental hair pieces made by them over the years. The owner woman (who has been referenced many times in reviews for her hideous customer service) was wildly insensitive from the get-go and I loathed giving her my business on a personal level. She basically rolled her eyes at me the first time I walked in, totally insensitive to me and my insecurities over my hair loss. She was so rude. The saving grace was that the first piece she made for me with natural hair was amazing. It was perfect. The second piece was a disaster. A natty, ragged mess for ~$1300. The 3rd piece was made supposedly using the perfect first piece as a reference. We even had it sent away to wherever she has the pieces made to replicate it. Fail. Same with the 4th piece. And every time I came to the store she was rude and insensitive. But the worst part, which I didn't even learn until I found a new vendor was the bait and switch tactic she used. The first piece was made correctly, according to a professional wigmaker I'm working with now to create my new piece. The latter pieces from Helena, including the 2 last pieces that were supposed to have used the first perfect piece as a reference, were shoddily and incorrectly made. I bought here a men's wig in 2012. I was satisfied with the item. I just ignored the rude lady because I need them and i didn't have enough time to go shopping around. It's now 2019, I returned here. I asked how much the man said $650 for a human hair wig. I came back next day and the rude lady quoted $750! In just one day, the price jacked up by $100. But to my surprise, after asking to see the wig, it was exactly the same wig I purchased in DC for $500 plus the sales person treats his customer in a professional manner. Avoid this. Really rude staff and poor selection of ready-made wigs. Even the short, synthetic wigs here are really expensive and they charge you per wig you try on. I was obviously a sincere potential customer, not someone just looking to giggle with friends or anything. (I came in alone.) And their selection is so measly I only wanted to try on two anyway. I bit the bullet and tried out one which was really unflattering though the salesperson told me it looked great on me. (It didn't at all.) After reading mixed reviews I decided to take a chance and called first to see if what I was looking for might be available in my coloring. I had been to several wig shops with no good results. From the moment I walked in and Helena saw me she was right on with her diagnosis that I didn't need a wig but just a hair piece. They acted as if I were interrupting them and it seemed to be a problem that I asked question. Yes, Helena can be unpredictable with her friendliness/mood/quality of service. She's been everything from nice to rude to me. But, her wigs are excellent (I've had two custom pieces made) and the prices are reasonable. I've shopped around and most other places in NYC with the same quality are more expensive. If you want to pay a lot of money for a wig, to be lied to, to have your questions about wigs go unanswered, to be sold a wig that won't stay on or that will give you migraines because it is too tight, and to waste money to custom order a wig that comes back 6 weeks later looking worse than any of the ones that you've already tried at the store, then go to Helena. I ended up custom ordering a wig because I was told that they only had one size, which was too tight on me. The color of the custom wig looked like a bad highlighting job. The hair shines so much that it looks like artificial hair. The part is wide and you can see the wig cap at the part. The hair on the wig was so thick that I had to have them thin it out, which they did with a razor. A reputable wig specialist told me that that's the quick and unprofessional way to thin it. I was told that I'll be having real problems when it's humid and all the short hairs start to stick out like broken hairs. I had to make about 15 trips to Helena's before I ended up with the finished product. This cost me about $400 in train fare into NYC. I was told the custom wig would be $l,000 but when the wig came she told me it was $1250. Oh, almost forgot, when I asked them to thin it out, they charged me extra (other wig shops include this service in the price of the wig). I have a permanent hair loss problem and wanted a beautiful wig that I could wear when I go out with my husband. Now my money is gone and I can't afford to buy another wig and am embarrassed to wear this one. read more

Helena is a fabulous wig maker, designer, stylist and is fairly priced. Yes her "mood" can be a bit erratic BUT she is always PROFESSIONAL, works hard to get you what you want and expeditious in custom orders, if your looking for a friend in a wig store your probably not in the right place.. If you want a high quality ready made or custom piece (I had 2 made) she is the one to go to. Her assistant (Uta ?? sp) is sweet and super super talented. They also will work very hard to tailor a piece based on your wants. Both of mine were very non tradition colors and they had no problem accommodating my request. read more

I went to Helena today after being referred there by Iman (yes, the world's fiirst black supermodel) and Madonna's hair stylist. I'm a style editor in South Africa for a magazine similar to Essence in the US. First of all the lady who manages Helenas (I assume she is one of the Chung family who owns this business) completely ignored me when I entered the store until I hovered at her desk and she could no longer NOT acknowledge me. I told her that I wanted to write about her store in our magazine because many of A-list celebs get their hair here and she just stared at me blankly. She told me she doesn't like to reveal her celebrity clientele which I respected until I turned around to see a wall covered with pictures of this lady in her store with dozens of celebs. I cant imagine L'il Kim or Sarah Jessica Parker asking this shop girl to pose with them which can only mean she had so little regard for their privacy that SHE asked them to pose with her and stuck the images up there to promote her business. No problem with that but then why pretend she cares about their confidentiality. It is not as if the public doesn't know that wigs and extensions are de riguer for people in the entertainment business. I also asked her some technical questions about the wigs which she answered but really seemed like she'd rather not. These weren't stupid questions as I have worked with lace wigs for years yet she seemed to be rolling her eyes often. I asked her about a specific kind of wig (that has an effect as if thedark hair roots have grown out of to create a more realistic appearance) and she told me they dont stock wigs like that. Once again I found such a wig a minute later. My friend who came shopping with me said she gets the feeling this lady does not care to sell anything to us. I had allocated a large part of my budget for this store but decided against it as the extremely awkward way these people treated me was unacceptable. It really was my only bad experience in 2 weeks in NYC. If I look at the pictures of this lady beaming next to the stars I can only assume she makes enough money off of them that she really does not care to sell to the general public.
