Bits N Pieces is a wonderful place . I discovered it three years ago when I was diagnosed with cancer. Fernando made the experience of choosing a wig fun . I bought a real human hair wig that look's awesome . No one could tell it was a wig. After my treatment I went into remission for two years. Unfortunately my cancer came back. Although I've struggling with hair loss for only a few months, Alopecia is the first thing in my life that caused low self esteem; enough to not want to go out. (This is coming from a girl who went out every night and is no longer allowed in half of the restaurants in Miami, New York, or Charleston). A good friend of mine who suffered from cancer, HIGHLY recommended Bitz-N-Pieces. Nervous, (so nervous I forgot my Prozac that day), I expected to leave the store "less sad" than before. Knowing curly, sandy blonde hair is difficult to replicate, I did not expect my customized wig to be anywhere near perfect. Instead, I strutted, LITERALLY strutted out wearing my wig in awe of not only the people who work there, the quality of the wigs, their private rooms (which instantly reduced my embarrassment and discomfort), but myself as well. I actually said to a random person "Doesn't my hair look good? It's a wig!" Even though I got dirty looks, it was worth it! I texted my family saying, as long as that place is open, I don't care if my hair grows back. Might be dramatic but true. After reading some of the negative reviews, I can understand the frustration wanting one thing but coming out with another. Example: I went in KNOWING I was purchasing two synthetic wigs. The plan was to get one that looks like my natural hair, and one that looks the way I've been styling my hair (straight dark brown with bangs). I however left with one real hair wig that looked like my natural hair. I didn't want real hair, anything with roots, etc. The second I tried on the wig though, there was no doubt in my mind that thats the one I was purchasing. We all like to think getting a wig or lashes or botox, etc. is our opportunity to be PERFECT, however, it is actually the opportunity to be ourselves. I decided to make an appointment at Bitz-N-Pieces after reading some reviews that said the shop offered a great selection of high quality wigs and stylists. But I sadly discovered this wasn't the case - far from it. I was looking for a specific shade of platinum/gold blonde (that matches my current hair color) and brought in a photo of the style I wanted. I found it annoying that they charged me $35 for a consultation, but I figured I'd find a wig from the huge collection they had and the fee would be deducted when I purchased the wig. .... Well, I couldn't have been more wrong or disappointed. I was escorted into a little room, where I explained what I was seeking. The stylist would leave for 10 or 15 minutes at a time and then come back with only one or two wigs for me to try on. I only got to try on about four wigs in total over the period of an hour - which was ridiculous. .... Only two of the four was close to the color I was seeking. She kept wanting to show me wigs with dark roots showing - which I told her I didn't want. (I have blonde hair, and when I see one-inch roots showing, I usually go to my colorist to have my roots touched up. So, why would I want a wig that looks like I need to go to my colorist?). While I preferred human hair - I was open to looking at synthetic ones too. I wanted to see the differences. But the stylist quickly dismissed all synthetics, claiming they only came in one shade of blonde and it wasn't the blonde I was seeking. Really??? .... So, then she brought three human hair blonde wigs: The first one had a strong odor of perfume or shampoo on it as if it had been recently worn or washed, and had a weird crinkled texture. When I asked about the odor, she insisted nobody had worn it - but couldn't explain why it smelled of perfume. The other two - one was $2,500 and the other $3,600 - were closer to the color that I was seeking, but I wanted to see more options. However, those were the only wigs I got to see or try on. She told me she didn't have any other wigs to show me - and had to move on to her next client. Huh??? Needless to say, I wasn't impressed. For a $35 fee, I would have expected to see and try on a large selection of wigs - not just four over the space of an hour. Needless to say, I left feeling disappointed, frustrated and a bit angry -- for foolishly wasting my time and money on this shop. .. I would not recommend this shop to anyone - unless you want to pay $35 to see four wigs over the span of an hour. read more

I had asked if they would color a wig that I had purchased elsewhere and they agreed and price was set and prepaid. The wig was sent to me a week later then promised....disappointing but ok. I made an appointment at Bitz N Pieces with a bit of hesitation after reading some of the less favorable reviews here. But it had been recommended through a friend which was more important to me than the on-line reviews. This is not the first time I've gone through chemotherapy, and the last time I bought a wig at a well-known (not NYC) store and ended up with a $500 synthetic wig that was both ill-fitting and ill-suited to me that I never actually wore. I wore hats or gave in to my baldness for a year. I called Bits N Pieces during their normal business hours and spoke to Jennifer. I was easily able to make an appointment at a convenient time. Jennifer clearly explained how their consultation fees work, as well as the fact that they don't accept insurance for wigs purchased for medical reasons. I had a few questions, which she patiently answered - so I knew exactly what I was in for. The salon is bright an airy; Jennifer greeted me and offered me something to drink as soon as I arrived. She then brought me to a private room for consultation with Fernando. Fernando and I discussed what I wanted (as close to my natural cut and color as possible), and the pros and cons of synthetic versus natural hair wigs, such as cost, ease of styling and maintenance, etc. We tried many options, and agreed on one that was close - but not quite - right. He then styled, thinned, cut and sized the wig until we agreed it was nearly perfect. He explained how to put on and care for the wig and reminded me that once my hair started to fall out from the chemotherapy treatments I should plan to return for refitting and any further style adjustments, which I did. At this second visit, we also settled on the best way to secure it. I just made an appointment for a final "tweak" on the fit now that I've been wearing it a while. Fernando will have spent almost three hours with me by the time we finish our next fitting - and I never felt rushed, pressured or scammed. My new wig (synthetic) was also $500, but the difference between it and my first one is night and day. My sister has been a hairdresser for 30 years, and she told me it is one of the best she's ever seen. Don't be swayed by some of the negative reviews here. Make an appointment. Ask questions. Be open. The folks at Bitz N Pieces really do want their customers to be happy. read more

(I went to their salon on 37th and 8th Ave.) Both Randy and Edward treated me kindly and with understanding since I was there for a medical reason and was very down. I write a review once every few years but I went to this salon today and left feeling so happy. I have never tried on a wig or piece and didnt know what to expect. I have fine hair but recently noticed a bald spot due to an accident and hematoma. it fell out a month later in that spot. SO, after looking at reviews/proximity, i decided t0 make an appointment. it's a nice salon on the 3rd floor of a building, so it's private and extremely clean and tidy. i was the only one there and you can tell they want to make you comfortable and would keep everything confidential. I sent them about 7 pics of my hair at diff angles and styles prior to my visit. I met with Edward who already had two crown pieces picked out for me. It showed he knew what he was doing and had a gift for it. i fell in love with the first piece and head over heels with the second. the first was more realistic bc it made my hair look naturally fuller and obviously hid any evidence of my bald spot. the scalp looked so realistic. All he has to do is change some coloring and im able to pick it up on wednesday. the 2nd piece was gorgeous flowing locks i had in college but i thought id go with a subtle piece for now. I never write reviews but after my experience at Bitz & Pieces I feel it my duty to inform other cancer patients before they select this salon. On March 18, 2015 , I finished 18 weeks of chemotherapy for Stage 2 Ovarian Cancer. I was elated. On March 19th I phoned Bitz & Pieces where I had my human hair wig made to wear during treatment. Athena, the manager answered the phone in a very flustered tone of voice. She asked if she could phone me back in 10 minutes and told me she was having "staffing issues", and generally not a great day. To this point in time, she had been nothing but courteous and helpful to me. More like 20 minutes passed without a call back and I needed to leave for an appointment so I phoned back. I told Athena I wanted to bring my piece in to have it washed and styled and also to have it examined as I had recently noticed that the hair was falling out and you could see through to the netting. She told me to come by and they would take care of everything. I arrived at the shop and buzzed for entry, it took numerous trys for the door to get opened and when I opened the door, Athena was walking toward the reception desk with and EXTREMELY annoyed look on her face, huffing and puffing in dismay. She immediately spoke to me in a sharp tone, looking impatient before I had an opportunity to speak. I went to the restroom to take off my wig, came out and she called over the technician to look at the wig. I have fortunately until this point in time, never had cancer, never had chemotheapy and never lost my hair and had to wear a wig so EVERYTHING in this process and journey was new and unfamiliar to me. I came to Bitz & Pieces for expertise, guidance, quality and superior work, support, and ongoing help during my treatment. On March 19th, Athena and her technician literally shattered my beautiful day and left me in tears by their unproffesional, callous and rude behavior towards me. I explained that I was confused as to why the wig was falling apart since i had rarely styled it beyond an occasional brushing with my fingers. It was more confusion than complaint, having paid $1800 for the piece I was confident that Bitz & Pieces would stand behind their work and take care of my problem. The technician told me my piece looked 5 years old and that it needed to be rewoven. I agreed. She then explained that it would cost $450 to do so and I should "just go get a synthetic piece" to wear until my hair grew back for 2-3 months. I was shocked that she would make such a suggestion since I was very clear that I would be wearing the piece over the next months while my own hair started to grow. Just because I am bald does not mean I have lost my sense of style, it was extremely disturbing that the staff would brush off my needs as a client. At this point it went from bad to worse. I explained I was unaware of the questions to ask on hair care, etc, and that I was in a vulnerable condition, focused on my health and had come to the salon for the high quality of service, to which Athena screamed at me, "All our clients are vulnerable". I eventually left the salon and called the next day to speak with Barry, the owner. Athena screamed at me that she did not have his personal mobile number & did not know his whereabouts. I merely asked if she could get him a message, she then hung up on me! I phoned back, shocked that Athena hung up on me. She told me that Barry said it was ok to hang up on clients. INSANE! Barry did call, he did agree that when clients had "chemo brain" he told his staff. Again, I was shocked, "chemo brain", I have no idea what that even is. I was simply asking for the service I was promised. I complained about the technician, Barry said, "we don't pay attention to her, she's on meds, but does good work". Again, insane! Barry agree to fix my wig at a reduced price, I was so upset by all these truncations I wrote a review on yelp, Barry phoned and said "we have a problem". I can't have that review online, you're going to get your wig & be happy, so i should be happy to", take down the review. Since the salon had my wig, I was forced to remove the review fearing that they would ruin my pierce or not give it back. Now that my hair is growing back, I felt it vital to share my experience so no one else should suffer as I did. As phony as the day is long, with a bizarrely haughty and hostile attitude that is a complete turn-off. Just as she finished telling me that I needed to call until I reached the owner, whose hours were unpredictable, because, "he's da owna," an innocent-looking young woman walked in, and this same Athena smiled sweetly and offered her a cappuccino. I explained that we needed to buy another piece, since my mother had ruined hers, and this too was impossible. She didn't feel "comftubul" selling it to me, given my attitude. I tried explaining about customers and sales staff and how that relationship worked but wow, but none of this applied to Athena who is the "managa," and therefore not a salesperson. Mom had an appointment with JT ("Just Terrific") last week. He helped fit her for a beautiful short blonde wig to help her during her chemotherapy treatment. It looks absolutely stunning and she didn't even have its styled yet (its still in the bag, he's supposed to spruce it up or as he joked "butch it up" next week) He was compassionate and funny as they joked about botox amongst other things. Was just diagnosed with breast cancer and am now undergoing chemo. I wasn't sure I wanted a wig, but my friend highly recommended this shop. I made the trip from CT to check it out. It was a wonderful experience and I actually bought a wig. I met with Edward, who was very considerate and took his time in understanding what I was looking for. Nothing seemed to much for him and he brought all kinds of different styles/colors, etc. There was no pressure between buying the more expensive wig. Edwards only concern was that I was happy and felt comfortable with my choice. Can't wait to go back and get my wig styled. After several recommendations I was excited to buy my wig(s) from Bitz. Unfortunately I did not have a good experience. The stylist assigned to me might be a good stylist but not a good "salesperson" and I would not recommend using Fernando. Once I said I wanted a synthetic wig he seemed to lose interest. I did purchase a wig that day and a wig to be worn under a cap. Turns out I am allergic to synthetic hair and my face broke out. Since I am undergoing chemo therapy my dr. advised me not to use the wig. I contacted the salon but they would not take the wig back. Randi offered apologies and a partial credit to be used towards a new wig. Unfortunately a real hair wig cost in the neighborhood of $2,000 and my credit was only for $250.00. To be fair I did get full store credit if &150.00 for the "half wig" I also purchased that day. So buyer beware - I'm stuck with a store credit of $150 and a wig I cannot use. There is much more to this saga but too long and complicated to put in this review. I intend to contact American Cancer Society and Sloan Kettering Hospital to tell them how I was mistreated. BTW my wig cannot be worn will using the oven. Fernando advised me the heat will damage the wig. I assumed that was the case with all synthetic wigs but later learned that is not the case. Over 15 years ago I went here to get a wig for myself while undergoing chemo. They were kind and helpful and Edward helped me find a wig that matched my real hair and then cut, and styled it with roots and highlights to make it look natural. The quality has been steadily declining over the last few years. The hair quality is not great, and the craftsmanship is substandard. Look carefully at the way the caps are made and the way the hair is attached to the cap. Some of them almost looked used. When I brought this to their attention the last time I was there, Barry was summoned and lectured me as if I were a novice. I was recently diagnosed with ovarian cancer and began my search for a wig... I ended up buying a wig a couple of weeks ago at this establishment, and I feel a responsibility of writing a review. "Maggie" was my saleswoman. Since our first appointment, she was very rude. I decided not to let her "get to me" and ignored her comments and attitude. She made me feel that I had no reason NOT to buy the 2,500 wig right away- as if I were purchasing 15 dollar shoes! I returned twice, once with my mother and the other with two friends. That third time, she made a comment such as "this is the third time you come around, and I don't have time for this." My friends could not believe what they were hearing! I told them, that I was not going to allow Maggie to get to me. When I told her I would buy the wig (a 600 dls synthetic one), I asked her if she could help me cut it into a nice hairstyle. When I asked her how she would do this (meaning, the haircut) she mocked me and rudely said, "with scissors!!" In retrospect, I should not have bought anything from this establishment, or should have insisted that SHE not get any commission from my purchase... I should have left the store, but I didn't... I bought my wig and I didn't even see her at the end.. she was with another customer. I felt soooooo MISTREATED. From reading other customers reviews, I can see that this has been going on for a long time. My Doctor at Sloan Memorial Kettering was the one who recommended going to Bitz-n-Pieces... I will definitely make sure they know that this is a very insensitive establishment who only care about the sale and not about the people. There are so many other options in NYC- If you feel vulnerable, stay away from this place. If you have CANCER please do not go here.. they will step on you and disregard your emotions and what you are going through. read more
