I felt conned in the invisalign consultation. Helen is a platinum invisalign provider only in the number of sales she made. Platnium has nothing to do with quality. She pressured me to buy and said I have to give an answer to her right now and confirm the purchase. Or she would not do any more accessing or scan the teeth and do imaging. I should have left and took my business elsewhere. And not waste my time. Got locked into a $7,000 contract. I later asked multiple friends and looked at other places online and avg price is $5,000. So I overpaid. I dont mind a premium cost I if I received premium care. The dental assistant also sucked for my teeth cleaning. And they were no longer working there the next time I was at the office. Turns out they got fired for incompetence. Which was no surprise. They hire cheap labor and get cheap quality results. But they charged me premium prices. Keep look and shop around and don't give into Helen's pressure. Helen said i had many cavities and need to repair ASAP. But when i got the appt with the her general dentist they only fixed 2 in total. So she was exaggerating and conned me. read more

I started going to Dr. Thai a couple years ago and I can't say enough good things about her. She is gentle, patient and has a wonderful sense of humor. The other staff in the office are also great. Kelly is my hygienist and she keeps me entertained while doing an excellent job cleaning my teeth. The receptionist (Linda I think) handles the calendar like a pro, squeezing me in as necessary and keeping me informed with reminders via text. Terribly disappointed, frustrated and angry about the service and treatment I received at this place today. If I could give them less than one star I would. This guy named "Dr Brian" crossed a line that rarely is crossed with me. His condescending tone as he advised me that if I didn't brush my teeth better, the cleanings would not do any good was noticeable but I let that slide. He left the room twice to work on other patients, I waited. When he returned the second time I had gathered my belongings and was prepared to leave. When I told Brian I needed to leave, this childish S.O.B. actually stood in my way, obstructing the exit. With the dental chair on one side and a counter on the other, he held me as a captive audience for his little exercise. I gave him courtesy that he did not return as I stood there while he gave me the toothbrushing speech. He picked up the teeth thingy and demonstrated. The nerve of this immature individual was only matched by his ignorance of the law, social etiquette and customer service basics. Once I told this clown I needed to leave, for him to do anything other than clear the way and step aside, was unprofessional, inflammatory, unappreciated, unnecessary, unprecedented in my experience with folks in the helping professions and possibly illegal. Just for the record Helen, you should send this guy to some type of training. My advice to him is this: when a grownup tells you he needs to leave your office the best thing for you to do is put your short little ego aside and move. Failure to do so could result in you needing dental work as well. I will be filing a formal complaint with the State Board and looking at other options. read more

Oh boy did I look cool. More details following. It was a bit difficult to find Dr. Thai's office, but a quick phone call to the helpful front desk staff (Michelle) while standing in front of Whole Foods Market brought me quickly to the right place. Dr. Thai's office is located in the Berkeley Central Medical Building right across Telegraph from Whole Foods. It's in the same building as the CVS pharmacy. I thought it was neat that their office was right across from Whole Foods, as you can go in afterwards and eat some free samples to mess up your newly cleaned pearly whites. The building itself is not the most modern, but when I walked into Dr. Thai's office (after going down the wrong corridor and ending up in front of Dr. Citron's office, who is in the same building!), it was a totally different ambiance. Her office is very nicely decorated. I filled out a 2-page history form as a new patient and signed a bunch of stuff, and then was taken into the x-ray room, where the dental hygienist took 18 x-rays of my entire mouth using state-of-the-art digital x-ray technology. I got to see my x-rays on the computer screen immediately afterwards. It was pretty cool, except for the hole I saw in one of my teeth (nooooo!). Then I was ushered into another room, where I met Dr. Thai, who immediately exuded an air of niceness with her cheerful smile. I have always HATED going to the dentist, but I thought maybe I could tolerate going to Dr. Thai. I was going to give her a chance. She got bonus points when she placed these cool sunglasses on my face, I suppose to prevent the overhead light from shining into my eyes, and prevent splashing and splattering into my eyes. I'm going to be an optometrist, so that's why she gets bonus points for that. ;) I must've looked pretty cool, except they didn't have nosepads, so for Asians like me that lack a nosebridge, the glasses pressed way up against my face. Oh well. I still looked cool. She felt the glands in my neck and performed an oral cancer screening, which none of my other dentists have ever done before. I thought that was pretty cool. We talked about Taiwanese pop star musicians and the East Coast, and the difference between DMD's and DDS's. Well, she did most of the talking, as you know you cannot say much when you're at the dentist's. ;) She poked around at my teeth a little and confirmed the hole we saw in the x-ray earlier, and sadly, I have to go back to get that filled. :( I haven't had a cavity in yeaaaaars! The dental hygienist then proceeded to measure the depth of all my sockets (I think) and gum recession, then performed the teeth cleaning (with no assistant! Impressive.) with an ultrasonic cleaner, some crazy scraper, and polishing. I was happy to know they have grape flavor! I hate cherry flavor... All in all, a very thorough exam, and everyone explained everything in detail so there were no surprises. I then scheduled another appointment for my cavity filling and teeth whitening, and went on my merry way with a bag full of complimentary travel-sized dental products (Crest Pro-Health toothpaste and mouthwash, Glide floss and floss threader, and Oral-B toothbrush with tongue scrubber!). Oh how great it feels to run my tongue over clean smooth teeth! **Note: Dr. Thai takes SHIP, so Berkeley students have teeth cleaning & x-rays covered 100%. I didn't even have to bust out my credit card! In addition, if you mention you saw their ad in the Daily Cal newspaper, you get a free teeth whitening kit. 4 stars for the quickest cleaning I've gotten here. Efficiency has greatly improved since last year. I called on a Monday to get a routine cleaning done and was offered an appt. on Thursday afternoon of the same week. I got to the office and there was no wait time at all. Maybe mid-afternoons on weekdays are the best appt. times. Who knows? But it was convenient that I was out of the office in less than an hour. Got a referral to the Bayside Oral Surgery office in the same building to get a consultation for removing wisdom teeth, so I'll see how that goes. And it was nice that the office cared enough to ask me how they can improve. Hooray for the power of Yelp and social media. read more

The regular trips to the dentist always involves a bit of apprehension and fear. When you need a cavity filled or a crown some people even just want to avoid it all together. The whole experience can even be embarrassing adding to the anxiety even though it is needed. Although we have many obvious reasons to just relax and trust the dentist it is just never easy getting used to someone working inside your mouth. The dentist is a pure professional with years of experience who has done these things many times. We fear what we do not know so it makes great sense to get the teeth cleaned and checked so if needed we can find out exactly what it is, and take care of it. If there is a problem then the best place to be is with a good and trusted dentist and with regular visits then a possible problem or emergency is a lot less likely. All these facts help but what really eliminated my fear and apprehension was a simple thought as I will explain. I had just arrived home from a meeting about a very important project and had a box with everything from birth certificate, social security number, license, financial and bank statements etc. etc. that I put on a chair near the door. I then grabbed the trash and got to the can just when the truck was there and pulled away. Finally, a chance to relax but when I went in I did not see my box of vital and important paperwork, IT WAS GONE!!! Oh Noooo! In my rush did I accidentally throw it all away and the trash truck was gone. It felt like I got kicked in the belly by a horse. As I sat there barely ably to breath imagining how long it would take to get all that paperwork back and how long etc. I even thought that all the fear I had concerning my dentist appointment tomorrow was nothing compared to this new problem and I felt like death. I actually thought that I would easily go through anything if I could just have my box of paperwork back. A few minutes later I walked back into the room and realized I had thrown my shirt over the box and just did not see that it was there all the time. Just a simple thought. All of that panic that my box was gone was just a simple thought and so was the fear and anxiety of the dentist. Just a simple thought. The dentist appointment went smooth and although I was a bit apprehensive it was remarkably easy. I even dosed off while the drilling was happening. I never would have believed it. read more

Dr. Thai is a great dentist to go to. The hygienists are all gentle and very nice. Dr. Thai herself always lets me know what she is doing as she is operating on my teeth, so I feel like I'm involved and informed. The chairs are comfortable and she gives newcomers a free whitening pen (which lasts a year). Everything is so pricey even with the student health insurance but in any case, I highly recommend her because of the great experience I've had going to the dentist. read more

Wow......lol....I see the three negative reviews and I am astonished and amused...I actually thought the one review was a goof on Dr Thai but soon sadly realized it wasn't. "Maybe if Dr. Thai had thought to tell me not to eat curry with turmeric while I have my temporary," (I am no brain surgeon but I think I would even know not to do this!! lol) I think Helen has some haters out there; I mean why go back to her 4 times if your crowns are falling out and you think she's ripping you off? I feel like I should start by saying that I was not paid in any way for this review nor am I an employee. That being said: Unfortunately, in this day and age it is becoming increasingly difficult to find health care providers that you can genuinely trust. This may be due to some sort of general discomfort with the health care professional, lack of professionalism, fair pricing concerns, and/or etc. These are the reasons that I personally have found difficulty finding the right dental provider. A friend recommended Dr. Helen Thai to me after I was having a hard time finding the right dentist. Upon the first visit I was immediately relieved and my faith was renewed that there are still truly good and honest doctors in this country. She and her staff were genuinely honest, fair, professional, informative, and friendly. Pricing is fair and transparent (and I haven't gotten any surprise charges on my way out of the door). Dr. Thai laid out for me a comprehensive plan to dramatically improve my deteriorating dental health. She has been my dentist for about two years now and I am blessed to have found her services. Best. Filling. EVER! Dr. Thai and her team's attention to detail and pain management make you appreciate why dentistry is an art and not just a science. Dr. Thai and her team are great at many things but here is what has really stood out over the last 2-ish years: - Preventative care and an eye towards your future dental health. For me, this meant receiving some bad news about some small cavities. Like others, I was skeptical because I had pretty clean dental health up until this point. But I appreciated the team's honesty and their willingness to involve me in the decision process. Yes, they do go after small cavities. However, I'd rather be told about the small ones before I need a massive filling. -Down to earth social skills that make you feel like a community member instead of just another patient. The team jokes around but gets serious with you (and each other) when the need to. I feel much more motivated to schedule cleanings and take care of myself because I know they care about my dental health as a person and not just as an insurance claim. e.g. if I don't brush, I know they're going to give me flack because they expect more of me - so I brush. Being personable with your patients may seem small but it has made a big difference in my day-to-day engagement with personal health. - I didn't want an X-ray because they had just taken one 8 months prior and they respectfully honored my request. - Her team seems happy and motivated but I will say that their casual attitude was unfamiliar and a bit off-putting at first. Any time you're new to a practice you don't have much to go off of when evaluating quality of care. Upbeat music and discussion of fashion was not something I was used to. Then again, I had never been to a dentists office where the staff seemed to want to talk to me - more or less one another. I kept wondering, "the staff seems so happy and relaxed, what's the catch?" However, once I got to know them, this attitude became a strength (see bullet point above). No catch; quality care can coincide with a brief discussion about Beyoncé. - Dr. Thai once told me this fantastic story about a time she went to a dental conference and was evaluating new topical anesthetics. A fellow dentist expressed shock and surprise that she was self-testing a small sample in the middle of a convention. Dr. Thai simply replied that she, "wanted to see what her patients were going feel if she used this anesthetic in her practice." THAT. That is the kind of empathetic dentist I WANT. Doctors willing to bend professional social norms in the name of their patients are precious and rare leaders. - Dr. Thai is popular but she and her Berkeley team are totally worth the wait. read more

I have been coming to Helen Thai since she opened (over 10 years!). I love this place. I've recommended all my friends and family to come here too. I ended up here because of one of those unfortunately common horror stories with another dentist where they started filling non-cavities, drilling away parts of good teeth to get access to a cavity, and pushy sales of unwanted stuff like teeth whitening and deep cleanings. Helen and her team are so much better than that. To date I've had tons of teeth cleanings, just a few fillings, and one crown. The crown is quite excellent and it doesn't even feel like I have one (no sensitivity). Location: Easy to find (right across from Wholefoods) Staff : Friendly, down to earth, easy going and funny. Office Atmosphere: Nice, clean and updated/high tech (crowns done within the same day!) Business/Finance: PPO provider and they accept SHIP (I used it when I was a grad student). Estimates are given before the treatment. I never had a problem. I had a balance of $3 which they never billed me for and when I returned, I had a credit of $26 refunded to me in the mail. it's a funny story actually.....I initially saw Dr. Thai two years ago and she told me I had 5 cavities. I never had a cavity before! So, I did what everyone would do; I left and got a second opinion. I went to another dentist that received 5 stars from fellow yelpers. Well, long story short, 2 years later I ended up with an abscess and a large bill (a crown from the other dentist and root canal from the specialist Dr.Nealon/Dr. Ho). I emailed Dr. Thai because I wanted to know if that tooth was on her previous diagnosis and it was. It turned out that Dr. Thai had diagnosed this cavity 2 years ago. So, I went back to Dr. Thai to check my other teeth. I was extremely embarassed but I told her the truth. She was so nice and she said that she's just glad that I'm okay. So I still had some smaller cavities and Dr. Thai took pictures of the cavities for me to see!!! I was so shocked. She explained everything and even showed me how to look at the x-rays. Dr. Thai may look young but I have to say she's pretty wise. She said, "Cavities are like tumors in your body. Do you wanna watch it or get rid of it? It doesn't matter what the doctor says, you do what makes you feel comfortable." I'm very vocal about my opinions and she makes me feel like I could tell her how I feel without being judged. I was seeing a dentist in Burlingame but due to the distance I asked one of my friends who recommended Dr Thai. The staff was very nice. I declined X rays at that visit (possibility of pregnancy). Dr Thai I felt was very unprofessional. She asked me who referred me. When I told her my friends name, she asked if she had a boyfriend yet and then she started telling me personal things about herself. During the exam she said that I had at least 5 teeth that needed to be filled at next visit. This is without any xrays! I went back to my dentist 6 months later and she told me that my teeth were fine. I never write bad reviews and hesitated writing this one but I don't want people getting teeth filled for no reason. I am writing this poor review right now with a florescent yellow front tooth. Maybe if Dr. Thai had thought to tell me not to eat curry with turmeric while I have my temporary, I would't be so furious and embarrassed right now. Unfortunately, no such helpful directions. Since my job is in the events industry and requires a lot of friendly smiling- the yellow tooth thing is a big deal. There is nothing I can do about looking like I took a highlighter to my front tooth in hopes of imitating some serious dental bling. Not to mention, the only reason I was back in there was that the first crown they put in, just 8 months ago, inexplicably broke in half- that looked pretty goofy, too. My other big gripe is that twice I've had major work done there- 1st some fillings and a slew of probably unnecessary Xrays that were quite expensive and administered very indelicately (scraping the inside of my mouth)- and then this crown, which was an elective procedure. Both times, they checked my insurance and charged me accordingly, and then I received a follow up bill saying that my insurance actually covered less than they estimated, and charging me somewhere near the full amount again, effectively doubling the price I'd agreed to after the fact. Then there is the incident of the 2nd replacement crown they put in, that broke three days later on my way to my honeymoon... I'm not even going to go on about that. But good grief. I'm done going here. It's too expensive and has cost me too much time and embarrassment. read more

I have been going to this dentist for years now and we have had nothing but great service. My whole family (husband and 2 kids) also go here and everyone has had a wonderful experience. The hygenists are so good with our kids who are 9 and 6. Dr. Thai is super funny and has an amazing energy. At one point my husband had only Monday's off and Dr. Thai's office is closed on Mondays, so my husband would travel to SF to see her at her practice in China town! We have never felt pushed in any way to do things we didnt want to and we have NEVER felt like we were being sold things. The reception is also awesome...she has saved me on so many occasions by calling and reminding me of appointments and working around my family's crazy schedule! I got a routine x-ray and cleaning and she said she found five cavities that needed to be filled. Skeptical, because I went 27 years without every having a cavity, I went to another dentist for a 2nd opinion. He looked in my mouth and looked at my x-rays and said I didn't have ANY cavities. NONE. ZERO. Obviously, I will not be going back. If you're a Cal student and have SHIP, it might be ok. But when my SHIP ended and I started paying out of pocket, her prices got ridiculous. After having a ridiculously horrible dental experience at Western Dental, I am so happy and relieved to have found Dr. Thai's office! Not only were they able to see me on the same day that I called, but everyone who works there is super sweet, friendly, down-to-earth, and helpful. Because Western Dental wouldn't respond to their request to send over the documents I'd need to sign in order for them to release my x-rays, their sweet receptionist created their own release form for me to sign and fax over. Also, the dental hygienist, Kelly, made me super comfortable and did a great cleaning. She joked around with me and made me laugh, which I needed after my fiasco of a dental appointment yesterday. And Dr. Thai was so nice, professional, and efficient. Really a warm place with wonderful staff. Dr Thai is a great dentist - she's friendly, honest, and caring. She will tell you to brush and floss better; she'll tell you how to avoid future cavities; she'll come up with creative ways to help you care for your teeth long term. Her staff are super nice, too, and they crack jokes with you and tell you stories. But they don't make you laugh when all those tubes are in your mouth, which is a good thing. They make you feel like going to the dentist is a pretty cool thing to do. They talk with you about stuff that makes you stop thinking "I hate being at the dentist", which is cool, because generally, the dentist ain't no fun. The office is in a funky building right across the street from Whole Foods on Telegraph; it's pretty quiet and sunny and you can park on the street. I say you should check out Dr Thai's office. Dr. Thai is super friendly, funny, and does fantastic work. The office staff and her assistants are nothing short of amazing. What more could you ask for? Well, you could ask her to stay several hours late on a Friday night because your insurance is about to expire, as mine was! Wow!!! Amazed. I am not a big fan of dentists....at ALL!!! Got to my appointment about 5 minutes late ( be sure to navigate to the address in Berkeley) there's parking in back that is pretty cheap if you get your ticket stamped. Dr. Thai and her staff is amazing. They are all so kind and take all the time to explain EVERYTHING needed. Dr. Helen Thai is the best! I've moved around the bay area, but always come back to Berkeley to see her for my dental needs. She and her team really know their stuff and they don't try to convince you to do anything you don't need to do like I've noticed with other dentists in the past (wanting to drill or do various procedures that aren't necessary). She is very straight up with what she thinks is most beneficial for you the patient. She and the staff are friendly and I enjoy hearing about her kids and dogs when I go there. It is a very comfortable yet professional environment. The other day I was having new tooth pain and although they were booked, she made time to see me and take care of the issue. Dr. Thai was the only one that returned my phone call at 9pm. She came in right away and was really concern for me. At least she cares unlike my "old" dentist (he told to call back during office hours!! wth!) I fell off my bike, chipped my tooth and she just fixed it all within the hour and it was 9pm!!! She rocks! (she did look very tired though...i felt bad). I just want to tell my fellow yelpers how much i appreciated her for being there and how thankful I am for not having to go out with a broken tooth! I wrote this as soon as I got home. read more

I agree with some of the other reviewers-- the clinical staff is friendly and the office is clean and bright, well-located and high-tech. My main problem is the way the business is run. After every visit there is ALWAYS a discrepancy about the bill. It is impossible to get a straight answer (let alone an answer in advance) about what exactly will be covered and what is not. Luckily, I haven't had to quibble over any huge bills... yet. read more

Everyone at Dr. Thai's office are amazing!!They are always one time for my appointment which is the most important thing for me since I have to go back to work. I'm currently doing my Invisalign treatment and I'm very satisfied with the whole process. They have taken the time to make sure I get the results I want. I totally recommend it. read more

I've been going to Dr. Thai for about a year and my teeth have never been worse. She started by taking out a filling I've had for years and re-drilling the tooth and re-filing it. I never had any issue with this tooth before but now it is very sensitive to cold and it causes pain every day. The worst part, however, is that Dr. Thai recommended a "boil and bite" mouth guard because I grind my teeth at night. This mouth guard has now re-aligned my jaw so that my incisors match up when I bite down and my molars don't touch (i.e. my front teeth hit together when I bite down). This is obviously bad and I spent my teenage years in braces so that I wouldn't have this problem. Having my front teeth hit when I bite down has lead to a chip in my front incisor. I just went to Dr. Thai's office to have them look at the chipped tooth and they only cleaned my teeth and had nothing constructive to say about the chip or how the mouth guard has re-aligned my bite. When I called, they did not mention that I should bring in the mouth guard but, when I got to the office, they told me they needed to see the mouth guard to tell if that was the problem. Very unprofessional not to tell me to bring in the mouth guard when I set up the appointment. So, now I have an appointment with an orthodontist because I will need braces (again and this time in my 30's) to correct the problem with my bite that the mouth guard prescribed by Dr. Thai has caused. I'm now looking for a competent dentist and you should too. tl;dr - I started seeing Dr. Thai a year ago and I now have: sensitive teeth, a chipped front incisor, and I need to get braces to fix the problems caused by her prescription of a "boil-and-bite" mouth guard.
