Heinrichshaus Winery is the perfect small winery. It's only a few miles from the highway in some woods. The proprietor is German; he built the building to resemble a German winery about 40 years ago. The tasting room is small and will fit only a few people. It's naturally cool inside. Heinrich guided us through our tasting like an expert. He told us all about the grapes and the history of the winery. He showed us a book he has that details the history of American wines, specifically the Norton grape. He did the tastings in real glasses. Due to MO liquor license laws, they can't sell wine by the glass. However, there are picnic tables outside. Look out for their two pet cats who eat near the door. The male is a Norwegian forest cat and he is very friendly. I can't say enough good things. I hope to be back again later this year. read more

This was EXACTLY the winery experience I was hoping for. The owner pours the wine for you himself. He warned us that he only makes dry wines -- doesn't cotton with the sweet sweet sweet (says the older he gets the less sugar he needs). There are only six kinds, and he walked us right through the tasting, telling us about growing up in South Germany, coming to America and learning at Napa, and opening his winery here. I loved the inside--smelled like a basement (in a nostalgic way). He is very personable and knowledgeable and pointed us to some further reading, if we were so inclined. I tried a type of wine i hadnt had before and wound up getting a bottle (a few-split a box of 6 for a 5% discount with my friend). This is the kind of place i would drive back out for! read more

This place is such a hidden gem. You have to be watching for the Heinrichshaus sign which isn't where you expect. If you miss it you will miss the turn off that leads right up to this little cottage in the woods. Once you find the long sign above the mailbox take a quick turn off the main road. You will then see more green winery signs and that's when you know you are in the right spot! The tasting room is a bit stuffy but really makes the experience fun. It is dark and dusty and acts as a show room for different trinkets that are for sale and provides a place for you to gather around and taste several different bottles of wine. The wine here was right up my alley. Most of it being on the dryer side then finishing with a sweet white that could act as a dessert wine. Since I was traveling out of town I only bought three bottles, but had I lived here I would be restocking my wine rack on the regular. I also really appreciated Mr. Heinrichshaus' passion for vino and story telling. It was an experience to be able to hear him talk about the wine and the history of the grape rather than just pouring it and saying what it should be paired with. Cheers to this cute little winery who also provides plenty of outdoor seating and chilled bottles if you decide to stick around and sip the afternoon away. They do not sell food here, so make sure to pick up your meats and cheeses elsewhere. As I like to say, BYOC (Bring Your Own Charcuterie) so you can snack and drink under the shady trees out back. Had a wonderful visit with Heinrich during a visit to Missouri in March. Diffidently of the beaten path but wel worth the time to stop and meet one of Missour's original wine makers. read more

The only reason I gave Heinrichshaus 5 stars is because 10 is not an option. As others have mentioned it is rustic and off the beaten path, but the wines are fantastic and the stories that accompany them are priceless. I only wish we had had more time to spend there today. We are planning our next trip there soon! read more

I've been drinking Heinreichshaus wines since moving to central Missouri in the 1970's. A friend of mine who owned Ferrigno Winery (sadly no longer in business) insisted that I try Heinrich's - he gave me detailed directions how to get there from his winery, but I managed to get lost anyway. Soo glad that I kept driving. You won't get lost if you don't try to go cross country. This is the place for those who like dry wines. And if you never did in the past, this winery may change your mind. Heinrich doesn't gladly suffer folks who don't want to try dry wines. But he is a thoroughly delightful gentleman with an encyclopedic knowledge of wine. If you really like learning about wine, ask Heinrich about the difference between Norton and Cynthiana grapes. I've tried just about every winery in the state of Missouri. When I talk to other customers in a winery, many people have a favorite story to tell about Heinrich. Find your story. If you tour wineries, Heinrichshaus is a must stop. And if you are driving through St James on I-44, do make the 15 minute drive off the highway to wine paradise. read more

This winery is a little bit away from 3 squirrels.(maybe 10mins away) There is a nice German man that makes the wine himself. The winery is not what you would expect as far as looks. However, don't let that scare you away. I really liked how during this tasting you received a lot of information on the wine and the process that it's made. The man that makes the wine is the one that also does the tasting. I bought 2 bottles here. I liked the Missouri Vignoles, semi-sweet table wine, and the chardonel, which is a dry table wine. The tasting sample was a good size and I thought the winery had a lot of character to it. read more

We visited this "winery" based on these Yelp reviews. What an experience...the nice 87 year old man was sweet and all but when we have to pick wine sediment out of our teeth, it has not been a good visit..I was not sure if we were at a winery or in the middle of a Texas Chain Saw Massacre movie set. The "tasting room" was filthy and the nice man had to clean off the tasting "table" with a sponge that I am convinced had never seen a dish washer. The wine was old as the bottles clearly had been sitting for awhile. So I am not sure if he was just selling old stock or what... Maybe we should chalk this up to it being "off season"? All in all, we just could not get past the filth and gunk in the wine glasses to even honestly review taste. It was an adventure, but one we will not repeat. read more

My wife and I stopped in to Heinrichshaus yesterday for the first time and it was amazing! Heinrich took us through a tasting of 6 wines. We love dry wines and every one that we sampled was first rate, complex and delicious. Heinrich was very patient as we asked question after question about his wines and his process, history, etc etc. We ended up buying 7 bottles and will certainly go back to spend some time on his property in the spring and summer. The tasting room is a throwback to a simpler time and Heinrich's wines speak for themselves. The small room has two cats and many awards that have gathered dust over the years. You have to see it to believe the quaintness. It was only 9 degrees outside when we visited, but his antique woodstove in the tasting room made it feel so cozy. Heinrich was so sweet that we felt like we had known him for years and you can really understand his dedication to winemaking. Highly recommended. read more

Wine tasting from the vintner himself! Heinrichshaus had such an authentic feel - from the tree lined drive to the wine tasting, we loved it! We learned so much from Heinrich and thoroughly enjoyed our conversation with him. He is full of knowledge about the grapes and the history of wine in general. We went home with several bottles and are going back for more. It was nice to find a local winery with some semi-dry options rather than the super sweet fruity wines that we found in the past at local vineyards. It looks like it would be nice to sit outside under the trees in the warmer seasons. There are some picnic tables available. read more

I bit out of the way and could be easily missed! It's worth the trip though! Small operation but Heinreichhaus knows what he's doing! Very friendly, and knowledgeable! There are no sweet wines here! Only the real stuff! His whites are excellent! The reds were good as well but did not suit my palette. I highly recommend trying it out! read more

Heinrichshaus was a pleasant surprise for my wife and I. We are certainly not wine connoisseurs, so to be able to taste a line of extremely delicious wines with expansive descriptions and histories added a lot of value. I discovered red wines I actually could drink! The vintner, an emigrant from Germany, enjoyed telling stories and sharing wisdom on language, travel, and genealogy. I could sit there all day and listen... while sipping wine of course! This quaint place is only marked on the mailbox, so keep your eyes open. The driveway, while picturesque, threw a couple obstacles in the way of bumps and potholes, so be careful. My small car could handle it. Overall, it's well worth the trip. read more
