Sadly, we learned they're being forced to operate under restrictions that don't seem to reflect what this business brings to the community. Because of complaints from nearby neighbors and city limitations, they aren't allowed to stay open past 4 PM and have faced restrictions on outdoor seating and live music. That's incredibly disappointing because experiences like this are exactly what make a community unique. She directed us to the door and we were greeted by two more people. Luckily we had reservations as every table had a personalized reserve sign including our time and number in party. When making our reservation we were given the choice of the music room or some other room. We chose the back of the music room and it was perfect. There are five tables and we could see and hear the two musicians. We ordered chicken salad, tuna melt and cucumber salad. We also had a small dish of fresh fruit. We were in no hurry and our food was delivered at just the right time. The wait staff are mature women and seem to love their job. The Old House is charming and we were encouraged to tour the house on our own. As a result, I plan to bring my friends for the holidays.

Heinrichshaus Winery is the perfect small winery. It's only a few miles from the highway in some…read morewoods. The proprietor is German; he built the building to resemble a German winery about 40 years ago. The tasting room is small and will fit only a few people. It's naturally cool inside. Heinrich guided us through our tasting like an expert. He told us all about the grapes and the history of the winery. He showed us a book he has that details the history of American wines, specifically the Norton grape. He did the tastings in real glasses. Due to MO liquor license laws, they can't sell wine by the glass. However, there are picnic tables outside. Look out for their two pet cats who eat near the door. The male is a Norwegian forest cat and he is very friendly. I can't say enough good things. I hope to be back again later this year.

However you're in the middle of Missouri where grapes don't generate like traditional regions, and palettes are different. So if you're familiar with wineries and good wine this will be quaint but not your place. This is more of an event space with wine as an afterthought as evidenced by the gaggle of sororities and moms funneling in all day. Frankly, I was appalled at the event I attended for my daughters sorority. Everyone bought a $25 bottle of sweet or semi-sweet wine (that's this wineries specialty), dropped in a straw, and suckled their sippy cups. Their sweet wines are like wine coolers - and what college student doesn't like those? That should give context to the quality of wine and positioning of this space). Their traditional varietals all have sweet or fruit forward notes - Cabs are more like Pinots but lacking the depth and notes of a true spicy, bold cab. Past this, parking is like a festival, down a dirt road about a quarter mile walk from the front door. While I wouldn't return, it's a great place for an event and provides something unique to the area. And obviously the Greek system utilizes as a more sophisticated approach to the bars in Columbia.
