Before I found Dr. Raiten, I'd been dealing with severe, debilitating pain while every provider I was seeing made me feel like I was being dramatic and it wasn't that bad. That is an incredibly isolating experience, and if you've been through it you know exactly what I mean. Dr. Raiten was able to figure out what was actually going on at my first appointment. He caught something rare that everyone else had completely missed because he actually sat down and took the time to listen to me. That led me to get specialized treatment out of state that has made my life immeasurably better. The procedures have always gone smoothly, and follow ups with his PA Maria haven't been rushed. I am able to trust everyone at IPA, which isn't something I say lightly given how long it took to find people who actually took me seriously and listened.

Because I have complex structural cervical disease (including disc disease and loss of lordosis) paired with a hypermobility disorder, having a needle placed near my spine is a high-stakes, terrifying procedure.The clinic told me to take 5mg of oral Valium, which did not manage my severe anxiety. When I expressed in the procedure room that I was terrified and did not feel safe to proceed, the medical assistant completely dismissed me and told me I was "freaking out." To make matters worse, while discussing options to reschedule, Dr. Raiten began making completely inappropriate jokes about controlled substances, referring to Xanax as "Post Malone drugs."Instead of showing basic physician empathy or discussing proper clinical options like IV twilight sedation, the doctor and his staff chose to mock and minimize a vulnerable patient during a high-stress medical encounter. I had to walk out of the procedure to protect my own safety. Patients with complex spinal issues deserve compassionate, trauma-informed care--not to be ridiculed by their treating physician. I have filed a formal complaint with the New Mexico Medical Board. Avoid this clinic if you expect professional or empathetic care...

Dr. Esparza and his PA treated me with lidocaine trigger point injections, which loosened my muscles immediately. The injections relieved the sciatica and back pain within an hour and the relief lasted weeks. I did my part with weight loss, physical therapy, and daily swimming in addition to the injections, so my sciatica and back pain went away within a few months. Whenever I got a flare up, the office welcomed me back for maintenance injections, as needed. I highly recommend treating back pain and sciatica with Dr. Carlos J. Esparza!

I…read morearrived about ten minutes before my scheduled appointment and was placed right away in a treatment room where I sat for 45 minutes. I knew the doctor was in the office because I saw her pass the open door several times and heard her voice occasionally during those 45 minutes. When she walked into the treatment room she flashed me a smile and asked me how I was doing. I told her I'd been waiting so long I was thinking about getting up and going home. In a voice best directed toward a small child she said "Oh, you need a hug", as if I was just having a bad day. I feel I deserved an apology and explanation for having been kept waiting; not some sarcastic remark. She then sat on a stool, began examining my feet, and said "You're not diabetic, are you?" That was the purpose of my regular visits to her - for diabetic foot care. Apparently she'd not taken 30 seconds to glance at my medical records prior to coming into the room. During the appointment she told me I'd benefit from rubbing a certain ointment on my feet and that she'd phone my pharmacist to prescribe it before the end of the day. When a week passed without her calling my pharmacy, I had to phone her and remind her to do so. My health insurance pays 100% of my doctors' visits and treatments. I deserve better than Dr. Gustafson.

Then when you are owed a refund they will process very slow and hold your money as long as possible and send a paper check instead of refunding your credit card. They do not care about the patient only the money. Also billing never answers their phone or returns voicemails at least not when they owe you money! Do yourself a favor and find another surgery center or not for profit hospital. This surgery center is a for profit center, it's all about the money for them.

I work…read moreclosely with pre-op & surgical services, I see a confusing & disjointed flow from both the patient & employee perspective. But at NM Surgery Center, I didn't get that feeling. My pre surgery contact was nothing less than professional. I received calls and texts reminding me of appts. Preop screening was done over the phone -saving me a trip. Billing called the day before to remind me to bring: insurance cards, ID, etc & what my copay On the day of surgery the registration office was in the same room - no trekking all over the hospital looking for offices. Once I signed in I received a text when registration was ready for me, the nurse text me that she would be out shortly etc. My wife & I were brought back to the preop area and prepped quickly allowing each provider plenty of uninterrupted time to talk with me. Each step in the process was fully explained so there would be no surprises. My wife was able to follow my progress via text . The recovery room stay was quick - within an hour of coming out of surgery I was in the car and on my way home. Everyone I came into contact with was professional, knowledgeable and enjoyed their job. As a surprise I received a get well card in the mail. It was signed by the surgeon, nurses & the anesthetist involved in my care. Truly a professional experience. If you w to are having a day surgery and this place is an option you'd be foolish to go elsewhere. The other hospitals in Albuquerque could learn something here.
