I'm surprised I haven't written a review about Bek and Heathen Ink yet. I have been getting tattoos from her since 2015 and I honestly can't see myself going anywhere else! Bek was recommended to me by a close friend and although I live in the city, she is worth the drive. It is a bit difficult to schedule an appointment with her as she's incredibly busy and does not respond to texts very quickly. However, if you are persistent and get an appointment, it is totally worth it. Bek is super friendly and super welcoming. Her space is homey and warm. I felt very comfortable going there. I've gotten tattoos in the city from bigger businesses that are three times the price of what Bek charges and I will never go back to those places again. While you're getting your tattoo, Bek will make conversation but won't force you to talk if you just want to sit there. She is a delight to talk to though. Now for the actual tattoos. Bek is a master at both stenciling and design. My first tattoo from her was an ambigram (pictured below) that read "Passion" one way and "Suffering" the other way. I asked her if she was able to design this and she cooked up an amazing design, albeit with abstracted letters, in just a day or two. I came in to get the design tattooed and it was a wonderful experience. She only charged $80 for the designing and tattoo as well, that's insane! That was a price from 4 years ago. My "Never Again" tattoo was only $30 which I got about three years ago. My most recent tattoos, the "God is greater than the highs and lows" and the Moana tattoo I got in one session in 2018, and together they cost $100. I always make sure to trip as generously as I can because these prices are crazy good. Sadly, I haven't been able to get another tattoo since because I've been so busy and broke. But Bek is honestly such a blessing for the tattoo community in Chicagoland and I highly highly HIGHLY recommend her for ANY tattoo job you need done, whether it's your first or your fiftieth. I wanted something for my first fur baby, Sora. In lieu of the typical paw print/portrait tattoos I decided to get her favorite toy. Enter Squidbear, the hilariously odd kong toy I originally got her when she was a tiny puppy- it ended up being the ONLY toy she won't tear to shreds. Still is to this day, 6 years later. I brought the actual Squidbear and also had a photo of one that hadn't been chewed up. I wanted the tattoo to reflect Sora's Squidbear, not some other dogs Squidbear. The tattoo turned out so much better than I'd pictured. You cannot find a better tattoo artist then Bek. I came to Bek to get a memorial tattoo done a little more than a year ago and since them have gotten three tattoos; two which are big pieces. I knew what I wanted for my two bigger pieces; my sparrows and guitar sleeve (pictures attached) but she added and went above and beyond to make them more than perfect. Bek gives her honest opinions on what will look best and what will work and what wont. I take her advice EVERY time and never regretted it once. I haven't had any ink done yet, but I have been going to Bek for all my piercing needs the last year. She is a personable lady and very funny. Her studio manages to be totally clean and sterile yet very welcoming and cozy at the same time. Her piercing prices are very competitive for the Chicagoland area. It's typically been double for the same piercing at other shops. I've never had any problems with any of the piercings done(other than a barbell winding up being too short, and she changed it out for me, gratis) and she's great to text if you think something isn't right or just have a question - Very prompt responses. read more

i am not someone who typically writes yelp reviews, but I had such a wonderful experience with Bek at Heathen Ink. From the initial contact to the moment I walked out the door with my new piece, Bek was professional, knowledgeable and FUN. On a long shot, I sent her an email about a month or so ago, asking for a price quote and her availability. Luckily, she returned my email after only 2 days with a VERY reasonable quote and an appointment time less than 2 months away. I got so lucky! She was always available with fast responses any time I reached out to her. The day of my tattoo was a great experience. Shop is small but comfortable, it felt like walking into a friend's house. Bek will greet you with a smile and a super friendly attitude. I was so glad she is a 'real' chick, very down to earth and easy to talk to. This was a 2.5 hour appointment, and she made me feel comfortable the whole time, no distractions or other people in and out, ringing phones, or blaring music. Chill environment that i highly recommend. The design she created for me is top notch, blew my expectations out of the water! As soon as i saw the sketch, I knew I'd made a great decision. The shop is covered in paintings and drawings Bek has done, so you know you're in talented hands. Took her time fitting it and making sure every line was where it should be. It had been 20 years since I got my first tattoo so I asked a friend with many lovely tattoos who they went to.... Enter Bek! My extremely geeky piece included a Klingon trefoil and pIqaD text. It wasn't large (a wrist piece) or super complicated but I did need a little help as far as the best way to do the color for the trefoil. I didn't want the whole thing fully colored in but I wanted all the colors hinted at... I brought in a reference piece for color placement, Bek made a couple suggestions and then ran with it. It was simple, just the right amount of color that I wanted. The perfect way to pay tribute to my geeky Klingon music project! :) Bek was GREAT! Not to repeat other reviewers but they're totally right. She was easy to talk to, down to earth, and just an all around nice gal to be around considering she's shoving needles into your skin repeatedly. I had my friend who recommended her with me for part of my session, too, and having them talk over me & then letting me interject a story was perfect. Even after my friend left, Bek kept the conversation rolling easily and I felt like I could have pulled up a chair & shot the breeze with her all evening. One of my good friends used to go to jade for all of her tattoos. the artist she saw there was pretty good, he did good detail work and coloring but turned out to be a perverted creep, as are all of the later night artists that i've met there. so now my friend has moved her business to heathen ink, which has worked out really well for her. unlike jade they're only open until 8pm which gives you a limited time range to make an appointment (no walk ins). they're not the best portrait people to go to, in fact if i wanted a portrait i'd probably hunt down kat von d and have her do mine spare no expense...but if you're looking for a good portrait tatt i'd shop around on yelp at least to see what people have to say. they do pretty good animal work though. also good fantasy/dragon type work. they've done some pretty stunning pieces on a few peoples backs that i've seen that was full of such vibrant colors and detail i was really impressed. in fact, my friend who was tattooed with some blue roses for her grandmother (at jade) is planning on having them touched up to look more realistic by her artist at heathen (who does really fantastic floral body art). their lettering is possibly the thing that all artists are best at. definatley be picky with your artist and get exactly what you want drawn out before you get it plastered on your body. i have to say that though these artists are very talented, some of their tatts are not very impressive at all and if they were on me i'd want to get removed and probably cry tremendously that i made such a mistake letting them put it on me. their faces on a few fairies i've seen have been cartoonish compared to the high class art of the body. faces ARE hard for a lot of artists, even myself, but that's something incredibly important to get right too. just a warning. aside from tattoos the artists there sell their own work which can be purchased either online or in person. heathen does piercings as well as tattoos and all are very reasonable prices. my friend has gotten 20 dollar piercings and tattoos that would normally cost about 100 dollars at jade for half the price if not a bit less. her boyfriend recently got a sleeve done which took 4 hours and cost about 150. Still a steal. So i recommend looking into heathen if you're looking for an affordable tattoo place to go to. just make sure you get to know your artist off the bat and find out who can best give to you what you're looking for! read more

She did an awesome job with my tattoo! I love it. Only reason why I didn't give her 5 stars was because of the tatu derm. It's this clear plastic looking thing that's supposed to be good for the tattoo, well soon as I got outside it just came off.... I tried to fix it the best I could till I got home. Once home I managed to somehow keep the tatu derm on but with better bandaging. The tape she used to bandage me up also wasn't the best, I do however think it was maybe the weather (it was humid) that made it suck. But the tattoo itself is just beautiful! I swear I'll post pictures, but neither were something I picked out on a shop wall-- in fact, about a week before I was in town...yes, I will go up to Chicago to get my tattoos because of Bek...I emailed her a specific design for the fleur-de-lis I wanted as well as the phrase and font of another tattoo I wanted. Once I got to the shop (late on a Sunday night; if you call ahead of time for an appointment she'll really work with you as far as hours she's available ) she sketched out both, added some flair I hadn't thought about, and we got to it. Bek was recommended to me by a friend. While it took awhile to find an open date that worked for both of us (She's busy! Yay!) once we had the date selected everything proceeded smoothly. Bek was friendly and professional. She worked with the design I had and transferred it to my skin beautifully. I am really pleased with the final piece. In addition to excellent artistic quality and her friendly and professional manner, she used a special skin film on the finished tattoo that made the healing process quick with virtually no discomfort.
