After the passing of our family dog, we thought we'd dip a toe in the water of meeting new dogs through an adoption event at the ranch. We met several dogs that day, as well as Dani. We went back to spend a little more time with Lucy, one of the many shelter-stressed pups that Sam & Dani pull from the shelter. Lucy is a ball of fun, and was an easy fit for our family. I appreciated that it was clearly stated to me that I could reach out to them if it WASN'T working (we had a dog at home and didn't know how receptive he'd be) and that they'd work with us to find a good dog for our family, without judgement. Fortunately we didn't need to, but it's nice when things are stated. Rescuing is a tough business-I imagine. Tough on the heart. Trying to help but the "need" never ends. I know they get lots of feedback about puppies, but don't hesitate to meet some of their older dogs too. It doesn't hurt that Dani & Sam have let my daughter into their world- allowing her to advocate, help, and participate when she can. They have big hearts with lots of room for both pups and humans! read more

All of the volunteers at hearts for paws care deeply about the animals. You can tell the volunteers are passionate about the work they do. My adoption process was simple and straightforward, having adopted 2 dogs from HFP. One of the dogs we adopted from HFP was going to be euthanized at the shelter with a liter of puppies at her side, another rescue was going to take her puppies and leave her there to die! NOT hearts for paws, they took her and all of her babies, no mama left behind!! We later adopted her and she was such a sweet girl. The other dog we adopted from HFP came from extreme neglect from a hoarding situation, another rescue took all of his friends but left him, he had some special needs. NOT hearts for paws, when we were looking for a foster they said take him, we'll take care of him. We later adopted him after falling love. Everything they do is to ensure a good fit for both the adopters and pups in their care! After such a hard go in life HFP provides life saving care to their dogs. read more

We love Hearts for Paws! My partner and I have adopted two dogs through Hearts for Paws and recommend them to any friends and family looking to adopt a dog. Our more recent adoption was Mango. At the time we were living in Sacramento and Mango was being fostered in southern California. The folks at Hearts for Paws were able to work with us to transport the dog to a foster at a more central location so that we could pick her up. This was a huge endeavor with a lot of coordination and we appreciated the excellent communication throughout this process. This rescue was also very diligent about making sure that we would be a good fit for our dog. Since Mango was born deaf, Hearts for Paws was very thorough about making sure that we would be able to accommodate as her needs are slightly different than a hearing dog. I love everything that Hearts for Paws stands for. They really go above and beyond to help save dogs and puppies from shelters and give them a true chance to find a good home. We found them last year when we started looking to add a dog to our family. We went in with the intention of adopting a 1 yr dog or older--not a puppy. However, the "happy hounds" litter was saved before we visited and our direction changed. I have to say that I appreciate how much they care about where their rescues go and knowing how they'll fit in with their adopters lifestyle. Puppies should truly be given a lot of attention when they come into a new home. I think people should keep that in mind when submitting an application to adopt. Hearts for Paws will not glance over your details. They are keeping the dog in mind when looking at potential families. Keep up the awesome work HFP!! read more

I am writing this review as both a volunteer and adopter, so I have seen all sides of this non-profit and the way it's run. Firstly, it disheartens me to see folks writing negative reviews for a non-profit charity. There is absolutely zero profit made off of adoptions. This rescue runs on volunteers and fosters and there are so many moving parts, and Sam juggles all of that on top of SO much more. Not everyone has the heart, courage, or opportunity to devote all their time to this kind of work so Sam and her family take on the really tough work. Please give folks who work in charity and are running good, honest organizations (like HFP is) please cut the humans slack. I have had over 10 people in my life adopt through HFP. No one cares more about animals than Sam, and she still remembers every dog out of hundreds upon hundreds. Support your local rescue! read more

We adopted our dog, Lark, from Hearts for Paws. Their application process is very thorough. They really take the time to make sure you are the best fit for their rescue pups. After we submitted an application, we still had to go to what I consider "an interview". They had an open house of sorts, where dogs and prospective owners gathered for a meet and greet. I can't imagine all the time and effort it takes to rescue these dogs, have available fosters, review applications, and meet prospective owners. They truly have a passion for rescue. Over the past two years we have seen this by following their social media. We refer people there that are thinking of a dog adoption, and donate to their cause when we are financially able. We could not be happier with our sweet, sassy, adventurous little husky. It was a perfect match. read more

Hearts for Paws is the best, not-for-profit animal rescue I have encountered to date. I've had the pleasure of helping out (on-and-off as my schedule allowed) since 2018 when I moved to Davis, CA. In this capacity, I've been able to see just how much goes on behind the scenes - taking time to learn about each of the animals, vetting each potential foster and adopter, animal transport, acquiring and disseminating supplies, vet bills (!), and juggling the ever-developing needs of multiple dogs at a time while always keeping their best interest at heart - all while relying on donations and fundraising. There's an incredible amount of coordination that goes into the successful operation of an organization like Hearts for Paws and I'm so thankful for the opportunity to work with this beautiful group. Hearts for Paws is a powerhouse organization, rescuing more dogs than you could imagine. They care beyond belief and make sure that every dog ends up in the right home. They clearly pack more than 24 hours of work into a 24 hour day. I adopted Kobicha in March of 2017, and they made sure we were the right fit for each other. Hearts for Paws has supported us through the discovery of a cluster seizure disorder and the many challenges that come with it. I am so grateful that they have a rigorous application process, because if Kobicha had ended up in a different home his medical care might not have been as much of a priority. We stumbled upon HFP on instagram sharing a video of 3 puppies they rescued and were in need of a home. HFP was so helpful and communicated with my husband and I all throughout the process. Special thanks to the foster mom Andi for all your hard work in raising these puppies and Carina the SoCal director for answering all our questions. We are so glad they were thorough and want to match you with the right pup. We got our first puppy from HFP and are so thankful for them and the work they do to save these animals. Without HFP our puppy and her two siblings would have been euthanized and now she has grown to be the sweetest pup because they saved them. Hearts for Paws is the type of rescue that every animal should end up at! We adopted our Bella from HFP in November 2018 and we are so grateful to them for bringing our sweet girl into our lives. The work they did with her in a short period of time has made her the perfect addition to our farm. Their application is long and their standards are high when it comes to potential new families but it is all about ensuring that each and every dog ends up in the perfect, forever home. If they think a dog isn't a good fit for your situation, they're very clear as to why and ultimately it is for the best. I want to thank all the HFP volunteers for working so hard for the animals. The first time I submitted my app it took about 8 days to hear back, but in all fairness many other rescues did not answer back at all. The volunteers then promptly set up a Zoom Interview (which I was new to but it was fairly easy), so we could talk "face to face" + do a home tour. I appreciate the inventiveness and collaboration they use to get dogs adopted to the best homes during this pandemic. After the interview, they promptly scheduled a meet and greet in the fosters backyard. The fosters answered all my questions and it was love at first sight with my new boy Finn. HFP is such an amazing family. Dani, Sam and every member has so much love for what they do it's unreal! I went to have a meet and great with little Dotty and absolutely fell in love. My husband had fallen for another little girl Ipo so we ended up going home with both. HFP goes above and beyond for their pets and for the adopters as well! My family and I couldn't have been any happier. We will forever be supporters in every way possible. They make sure as best they can to match family's with the right pups, in fact, I was a foster to another little guy and just couldn't imagine not making him an addition as well, so we did! We are forever grateful to Hearts for Paws for bringing Evie into our family in April 2018. We were so impressed with the thought and care put into recommending potential matches to us. H4P is dedicated to the very best care, support, and placement of the dogs they rescue. Our guy, Tommy, was found together with his sister taped shut in a box and discarded. H4P didn't hesitate to jump in and facilitate nursing both pups to full health. Unlike many places, their application and vetting process of potential adopters is rigorous. They will continue to care for animals as long as it takes to find the right fit and hopefully eliminate adoption "failures". H4P is awesome. read more

Hearts for Paws is a reputable nonprofit that has adopted some great dogs out to many of my friends. HFP does a wonderful job at pairing dog to person. Of course no dog is perfect and no person or organization is perfect either. Very few people understand what all goes on to make something like this run.
