Update 5: Changing my rating from 1 star to 4. I received a call from Karen, the president at Purebreds Plus. We discussed what happened and she assured me that my experience was not the norm, and that Leanne would be disciplined and/or terminated. She also refunded our adoption fee. Karen seemed genuinely concerned about what had happened. She explained that the adoption process should always include visiting the foster home to meet the kittens in a comfortable environment prior to taking them home. I believe the rescue's reputation is very important to Karen and the other folks at Purebreds plus, and I really appreciate the way they handled this bizarre situation Update 4: I got a call back from Amy at Purebreds plus. I missed their call but they left a message expressing concern and letting me know that someone would be following up with me in a few days. Update 3: Leanne just called my partner and left a message telling him that I peed on her paperwork(Wtf?!) and that he needs therapy and I need to go to prison. Umm, yeah, no stars Update 2: Leanne called me and left a voicemail: I'd like to ask you to enjoy hell. You truly are an evil person, you truly are. And I am so sorry for Alan(my partner) -y'all, this is so wild. I had no idea this could happen over some kittens. Update: After leaving my house Leanne texted me to tell me that she's calling all the rescues to put me and my partner on a do not adopt list. So I've blocked her number. -------- My partner adopted two kittens while I was away this past weekend. He said he never got a chance to interact with the kittens before bringing them home because Leanna, the foster, wouldn't allow him to take them out of the cat carrier. When I got home we realized that the kittens did not match the description provided. We were expecting a bonded pair of grey Maine Coon mix kittens with tufted ears and green eyes. What we got seemed more like a couple of poorly socialized 4 month old litter mates, that seemed much more like domestic medium hair grey tabbies than Maine coons. Their eyes were yellow rather than green, and they had long ear furnishings, but no ear tufts. They were still beautiful, and I've been a volunteer cat foster for years, so I figured we could socialize them if we really wanted to. The foster, Leanne, had said there were lots of applicants for these kittens, so we spent two days discussing and considering our options, we had paid $300 for the kittens, but decided it would be best to return the kittens to the rescue to be rehomed while they still had a lot of other interested families. I figured the rescue wouldn't care, they just get to collect another $300 off one of the other interested applicants. Boy was I wrong! I had texted Leanne to let her know that we'd like to return the kittens, but she hadn't responded, so I gave her a call. She answered right away and was very sweet on the phone. She asked why I'd like to return them and I told her it wasn't going to work out and that I could bring the kittens to her. She said her husband would come get them and we ended the call. A few minutes later she calls me back, sounding angry. She tells me that she needs her cat carrier and her paperwork. I told her that I have the cat carrier ready, but I wasn't sure where the paperwork is and would look around for it. She tells me that I better have her paper work and then starts yelling at me about what a horrible person I am, that she has a lot of applications and I was lucky to get these kittens. I tried to explain that my partner hadn't consulted me and there were problems with the ad but she just kept yelling over me. Telling me "too bad, that's your problem sweetheart!" over and over again. Then she said she was coming to my house with her husband and hung up on me. I was scared. I didn't understand the reaction she was having. I called the rescue to see if I could talk to someone, but all I could do was leave a voicemail. But for all I know those messages might just go back to Leanne. A while later she showed up at my door, angry and telling me that I was the worst person she'd ever met. It's so wild, like, I cannot believe that this happened and that she behaved this way. After she left with the cats she even sat in her car, in front of my house, and just laid on the horn for a while.

Adopted a kitten from foster, Dayna, a few days ago. The adoption process was lengthy but really simple! This rescue is all about finding the right match for adopters AND cats. Dayna made the process easy, was very sweet & helped us bring home a new family member Laszlo (previously Cannoli) is settling into his new home and we can't wait to see him fully blossom! Thank you so much to Dayna and Purebreds Plus Cat Rescue for everything! (Pictures of Laszlo after bringing him home!)

This rescue is known to rescue dogs on the verge of being euthanized, paying exorbitant vet fees to care for the animals and pouring through dozens of applications to find a perfect forever home for each and every dog. As a non profit organization this is no easy task. When the time comes, we look forward to meeting our newest family member. Thank you for all you do.

This review is not about the animals: The dog we had was a sweetheart, but we weren't the right fit…read morefor her. She's going to find a great home, but Hearts for Paws makes that MUCH harder. I cannot recommend staying away from Hearts for Paws enough. I'm not someone to leave negative reviews EVER. But our experience with Hearts for Paws was so awful that I feel compelled to warn others away. We were very interested in doing a trial adoption (and hopefully adopting) a dog from them. We brought her home for what was stipulated to as a 5-7 day trial. When we picked her up, the foster noted some concerns they had--namely that the dog wouldn't do well in a small apartment like ours, as she was currently running on a 5 acre property. They were also concerned that she wouldn't do well with our cat, as she has a high prey drive (though we'd been told by the rescue that she was good with cats). Knowing this, we still decided to give it a try. The poor dog whined every day and night. She'd settle for a short period before beginning to whine and pace again. It was very obvious that she was upset and needed more space. We took her for 3 hour long walks each day, but even that wasn't enough. Further, the whining and pacing intensified, and she started jumping at closed doors, including the door to the room our cat was in. Our cat was petrified. Heartbroken but knowing this wasn't going to work, we reached out to the foster and the rescue. The foster was a sweetheart, and was ready to meet us to take the dog back. The rescue was another story. She rapidly started lobbing attacks at us when we explained we wanted to return her as soon as possible. She said horrifying things, and even told us we should hold onto her longer because "no one had died" so all must be well. She told us that if she had to take the dog back sooner (mind you we were trying to return the dog to the foster, not her), it would risk this dog's and other's lives. She sent us a photograph of a dead dog's brain splattered on the road, telling us this was the kind of thing that happened because of people like us. I won't share the screenshots of her messages or the photo, as it doesn't need to be done here. But needless to say, this is not a rescue worth dealing with, nor is it one who seems to really take seriously what's best for pets. I would not ever go near this team.

They're not an adoption agency. They are saving animals. They have limited resources (volunteers!), so they're going to create adoption obstacles to weed out those who are not willing, able, and committed to providing safe and caring homes. So be prepared to spend 15-20 minutes to apply online and be ready to respond quickly if they reply to your application. We inquired online about adopting our fur baby on June 19, 2021. We got lucky and got a response right away. Within less than 24 hours we got confirmation she was ours if we were willing to pick her up within the next day and a half. The process required an online application (be ready to get personal), several home video submissions, and some follow up questions. We picked her up on Fathers Day, June 20 2021! So it was quite the whirlwind. It was amazing and life changing! DAR is living up to their mission. They're doing the hard work. Don't expect them to bend to you. Their customer service is outstanding. They engage on Facebook & their friends of YCAS website is easy to navigate. I will admit I reached out to other shelters simultaneously for meet and greets, and I will tell you they were all soooo difficult. YCAS made it so easy for us! I filled out an inquiry form and someone got back to me same day. They were flexible with my schedule as my boyfriend couldn't get the time off work and we had to push out our meet & greet to Saturday (called on a Monday). The staff were very helpful there and introduced us to another dog in addition to the one we came to see. They know dog people when they see them, and trusted that our dog would be comfortable/safe meeting our new potential dog. All went well! The checkout/adoption process is easy. The staff at the front desk are knowledgeable and helpful. We couldn't believe the adoption fee was such a great deal, we definitely donated more. We are just about a month out of adopting and it has been such a smooth transition. Thank you YCAS!

You really have to wonder if the people running things here don't actually want dogs to get adopted…read morefor some reason. They are appointment only; bold choice, but I guess I get it if you only have the budget for one person to handle adoptions or something. They require you to bring any dogs you already have to the shelter with you; I can't imagine that the majority of dogs wouldn't be extremely stressed out being brought into a shelter which would make any interaction with another dog at best, less than accurate of how they will interact in a home. They are weird about footwear. I emailed the adoption person and explained that my dog gets extremely carsick but would I still be able to make an appointment to adopt a dog. She replied that it was STRONGLY recommended but exceptions could be made on a case by case basis and which dogs was I interested in? I sent the names of the dogs. She couldn't be bothered to get back to me. Ok then. Normally I would say that at the end of the day, management has the right to do whatever they want. However with this type of thing I think that no, you don't. What you have is an ethical obligation to act in the best interest of the animals in your care. Having extra hoops to jump through and prohibitive protocols is not doing that. We ended up adopting a very sweet dog from the Sac SPCA. And we weren't required to make our other dog violently ill to do so. Or wear special shoes. Just saying.

It was a great way for our 11 year old to prove she was responsible and ready to have her own kitten. The kittens needed some extra care in the beginning, but the shelter provided everything and summer break allowed extra time to care and cuddle the 4 sisters. It also brought our family closer together as we all happily chipped in to help. The shelter was very busy (lots of kitties needing care) so we had them a little longer than expected, but we were in tears when we had to say goodbye. Except, we did end up keeping not one, but 2 of them! It was great being able to pick the 2 that were the best fit for our family- fostering allowed us lots of time to learn their personalities. The other 2 adorable kittens were quickly adopted at the shelter's well-organized pet adoption event by the same family. We also received a certificate for a free first vet appt, which allowed us to get her treatment for her runny nose. All in all, I will be happy to go back for our next rescue! Answering that sign was my foot in the door to the shelter and how I started to visit the cats & dogs, take the orientation/volunteer classes, do doggy day outs, sleepovers & adoptions here at the shelter. I've even dropped off blankets, towels, hand towels for donations, just walked around to visit & give treats to happy, sitting doggies, to hang out with cats, and also for a sad reason-to quarantine my beloved doggie due to a biting incident. I'd highly recommend this shelter to fill your heart-to lend a hand, volunteer, and share your love with these unhoused animals by walking them around the block, taking them for a hike, a Pup-Cup at Starbucks, to the park, or to even foster the cats, dogs, or other furry creatures. The first animal we fostered here was a Boxer mix named Josh Hartnett. He was so full of energy, excitement. He was the star in his own show and our family was just his supporting cast. The surprising & amazing thing the shelter did, was the immense support we got while fostering Josh. The shelter provided all the toys, the kennel, dog food, leash, dog bowls, pretty much everything you would need to take care of a dog in your own home. Any time I had a question or concern, I could text them & they were timely to answer & meet all my needs & concerns. I remember one time Josh quickly chewed up all the toys they gave us. Concerned with his stress or even him chewing up our belongings, I asked the shelter for more chew toys. They put some in a bag for us & left it outside for easy pick up since I had to come by after hours (they close at 6pm). I liked that they are responsible for their animals reproduction and even had an established appointment for Josh to be neutered which I knew about via email. After 2 weeks of fostering Josh in our home, he went to get neutered. I kept track of him when he went to another dog foster parent, then eventually when he found his fur-ever home. Sadly, we didn't get to see him after we fostered him, but the best part was seeing him be loved & cared for on the Facebook Foster thread by other amazing foster parents then his eventual adoption. The shelter does really well to help the public be aware of the energy, social needs, cat/dog friendliness, housetraining needs, a potential owner would like to know before adoption. Green paw means pretty laid back, orange paw is in the middle, purple paw is high. There's signs above the crates that specify their approximate age & breed. While a potential adopter walks around they're welcome to grab a paper bowl & fill it with treats & treat them as long as the dogs are quiet, and sitting. Adopters are also welcome to hang out in a room or in the play area with a dog they'd like to get to know more. There's also a whole cat/kitten section and a nice room to hang out with them. I've even seen other little creatures available like hamsters, guinea pigs & turtles there etc. Here's the link to adoptable dogs: https://elkgrove.gov/adoptions/current-dogs-shelter Here's the link to adoptable cats: https://elkgrove.gov/adoptions/current-dogs-shelter Here's the link to adoptable animals, not a cat or dog (I see a bunny & a turtle currently): https://elkgrove.gov/adoptions/current-dogs-shelter I love that they have barn/working cats too. Adoption fees range from $10-$150. Minus a star because they don't seem to have enough staff/helpers anytime I've been there so often times I have to wait. Good luck & hope you find an animal you can love, foster and hang out with!

I took my cat straight away to our vet who tan blood work( $570) took stool samples and advised he needed medication for parasites deworming ect. The SPCA refused to give us the medication for the kitten we adopted but told us it would be best if we just returned him to the foster who was caring for him. All they are interested in is the "DONATION" of $135 or "Fee" . I am happy to donate to the care and rescue of all animals but I will not contribute to staff not doctors giving medical opinions and letting sick animals be adopted knowingly. We were told the cat may have diarrhea due to them changing the food. Clearly this was not the reason. They don't respond to emails, they don't have an office number they are unorganized.
