Please pause and read before applying to DAR. This is a volunteer based organization who's mission is to place pets in safe, loving, forever homes. They serve animals NOT humans. They're not an adoption agency. They are saving animals. They have limited resources (volunteers!), so they're going to create adoption obstacles to weed out those who are not willing, able, and committed to providing safe and caring homes. So be prepared to spend 15-20 minutes to apply online and be ready to respond quickly if they reply to your application. We inquired online about adopting our fur baby on June 19, 2021. We got lucky and got a response right away. Within less than 24 hours we got confirmation she was ours if we were willing to pick her up within the next day and a half. The process required an online application (be ready to get personal), several home video submissions, and some follow up questions. We picked her up on Fathers Day, June 20 2021! So it was quite the whirlwind. It was amazing and life changing! DAR is living up to their mission.They're doing the hard work. Don't expect them to bend to you. Remember, you are not the client - serving the animals are their purpose. Please don't write or pay attention reviews that they didn't respond to email. Don't bother to fill out an app - they don't have the common courtesy to reach out in any way. Totally disappointing after spending time thoughtfully completing an extensive (personal) app for a little Chihuahua that would have been adopted to one of the best Chihuahua-loving/spoiling moms around. I lost my little baby girl after 13 years and it took me more than 6 months to even consider another one ... How hard is it to email - "sorry we adopted that pet - keep showing interest we will find you the perfect one!" Or whatever ... just let people know you are taking their interest in a new family member seriously - this is like adopting a child; people put a lot of thought and heart into sharing so much information ... you would think the communication could be at least basic courtesy level. Apparently the rescue doesn't know how to read. They left a comment on my last review and TRIED to insult me for not knowing a Yorkie is a toy breed. Not sure what that has to do with anything since the test results don't say toy breed, it says toy fox terrier which is its own breed. Even if they tried to argue that Yorkie fell under the terrier group, the percentage was 12.5%. My dog is clearly not a Yorkie based on the picture attached but they still up-charged based on the breed. It's funny how they tried to be disrespectful by saying he is a Yorkie based on the results but also said these breed tests aren't accurate. Which one is it DAR? Are the tests accurate or not? Were you wrong or not? How much more contradicting are you going to get? It's also interesting that this is the only part they commented on and not about how they stopped communication, breached their own contract by not vaccinating or neutering our dog, and they ripped us off since we paid extra for to have our dog vaccinated and neutered by the vet they previously worked with. DAR takes no responsibility and blames everyone else for their faults. But it's not a secret, just take a look at every comment they've left on a 1-star review. They're literally showing how much of a joke the rescue is and how petty and disrespectful the owner is. I've never dealt with a business that treated their customers like scum. Not sure how you expect to taken seriously and respected when you go around belittling every bad comment. Davis Animal Rescue has violated my privacy and the confidential nature of the adoption by sharing my personal information with anyone. Additionally, the story this woman gave was completely inconsistent with the story I was given about how DAR acquired our dog and given the duplicitous activity, I have have witnessed from DAR, I seriously question the validity of the Facebook profile. I encourage anyone who has been defrauded, harassed, threatened or adopted a sick animal, or animal with a questionable background to report the incident to the Yolo County Sheriff's Animal Services Dept, the Better Business Bureau and any other avenue available to you. No legitimate organization would engage in the tactics myself and others have experienced with this unlicensed, unregistered CASH only business. read more

I adopted a dog from DAR in 2018 and they were dishonest about her health. They told me she was 3 years old and that her hernia was an umbilical hernia that she'd probably had her entire life. It was actually a screw up from her spay and I spent $1200 on surgery for not only the hernia, but to have several rotten teeth removed. I found out about the teeth on New Years Day 2019 when I rushed her to pet emergency because she wouldn't eat, drink and was vomiting. She had an infection from one of the rotten teeth. They charged me a $500 adoption fee. I spent $600 on vet visits and then another $1200 within 3 months. My dog's pet insurance listed the hernia as pre-existing so they wouldn't cover any of the surgery. I love my dog more than anything in the world and I would have adopted even if they had been honest. She's literally my favorite being. She has the best life now. She's healthy and well taken care of. However, I don't think they should have lied and charged such a huge adoption fee. I can't support a rescue that lies and doesn't properly treat medical issues caused by the vet they used. The slanderous and inaccurate response to my post should be a warning to all future adopters. I adopted my dog on 10.31.18. On 01.01.19 a vet looked in her mouth, told me she was likely 8-9 years old due to the level of decay in her mouth. My dog had surgery 2 weeks later. Not years later. I wasn't rude to the coordinator. I offered to volunteer for DAR since it was a volunteer based rescue and I'm passionate about animals. My dog is loved beyond measure. She has a huge yard to play in, eats human quality fresh food, has a bed in every room even though she sleeps with me and sits on the couch with me. She even has her own health insurance. Her health and well-being have always been my number 1 priority. When I asked about her anxiety it was because I wanted to see if it was from past neglect or abuse so that I could make sure that I got her the right help. Be aware of the slander. Check their BBB rating and look at the complaints that are similar to mine. Also, I can't find anything that says this place is a non-profit or charitable organization. The owner commented on my review that I gave up pets in my past, which is simply not true. I brought my 18 year old cat across the country with me when I moved to California last year. I was able to adopt my best friend Torben in December 2019 when he was 8 weeks from Davis Animal Rescue. The adoption process was easy. I filled out an application and sent photos of my property, inside the house and outside showing that it would be a safe place and plenty of room for a dog to be able to run around. My coordinator setup a meet and greet and after everything went well I went home with my new best friend. I like that they request updates after the adoption process because it shows they care about the animal's. I'm so thankful for the opportunity to be able to adopt through DAR team and highly recommend them to anyone who are in a position to be able to take on the responsibility of a new pet. A few months ago I saw a couple of dogs I was interested in adopting. I emailed, I messaged them on FB, and I filled out applications on their website. I never heard back which I thought was weird. Well, come to find out recently that they were operating under several rescue names (Davis Animal Rescue, Davis Rescue and Rehabilitation, and Elk Grove Animal Rescue) and had 58 dogs seized by animal control for poor living conditions. I submitted an application and waited two weeks, after not getting any reply. I sent another message, overall I've sent 4 to 5 messages and cannot even get a response. We lost our beloved shepherd a year and a half ago and we just started the process of looking for another dog to join our loving family. This particular organization is the first one we have reached out to since we started our search. We took time out of your busy day to fill out a very long and extensive questionnaire. We gave it a full 24 hours/business day awaiting a response. Since there was no response we decided to send a follow-up email the following evening. After five days of NO response we sent a complaint email asking why we had not received a response? Should we hold out for this dog or continue searching for another one? We are new to this and unsure? And what do you know, after I finally tell them that I'm very upset with their service and ready to give them a negative yelp review I get a response. So, it took for me to send a complaint for them to finally respond? Is their time more valuable than the people searching for a pet? DAR- a quick response saying " hey, thanks for your inquiry but we have had a lot of people ask about this dog. We will get back to you as soon as we can" would go a long way!! I adopted a dog from DAR this past Sunday 1/13/19. Met them at Pet Club in Elk Grove in the parking lot. She claimed that they just had her at the vet before meeting with me. They said she had a skin condition which is not uncommon for the breed and color. They gave me a bag with Cephalexin and an ointment for the sore on her leg. They dog couldn't even climb into the back seat of truck(this is a large breed dog)or into the back of my Subaru. Didn't think much if it. The dog coughed from the time we picked her up and is still coughing. On Monday 1/14 I emailed DAR and asked them if this dog was sick as she kept coughing. I received no response back. I then noticed that the dog had this gross brown mucus from her nose and she was very lethargic (They told me she was a couch potato) but in actuality she is so sick she has no energy. I called my vet and took her in on Tuesday (2 days after adopting the dog). The vet took me in 2 see the xray. Her lungs were full of fluid, he said she had a severe case of pneumonia, the spot on her foot was a Lick Granuloma, some more medicine as the medicine they gave was not what was needed. Now I have spent $441.00 plus $350.00 non refundable so now I am into this dog $791.00 in 2 days. Their response and attitude was unbelievable. They finally said they would take the dog back and give me my adoption fee back but not willing to pay vet bill at all instead they gave me some bs about all the money they spent including boarding (they don't board out animals). I wasn't willing to return the poor dog and eat a vet bill. Also I don't feel they take proper care of their supposed rescues and they are not a non profit and they run this like a for profit business. My last communication with they I informed them that I would never adopt from them again and I wouldn't recommend them to anyone either! read more

Update: So we drove up to Davis this morning to meet the dog we were interested in. We had a really wonderful family day, and tried to calm ourselves down about the excitement of possibly bringing a new family member home. We wanted to be level headed and ask all the right questions: Health, Vet history, why the dog hadn't been adopted already (super cute and sweet small dog), what it's history was - why was it in the foster system? We got solid answers to all our questions and it made sense to us. This particular dog was dumped at a shelter, the workers there deemed her not adoptable due to bite risk. The breed she is can be very angry if mistreated. 12 years ago, we adopted a similar dog. That dog HATED my Mom. She would growl and snap, jumping at her like she would bit her. It took about 3 months before she decided my Mom was 'ok' then my Mom couldn't get her off her lap! HA HA! They are loyal, attach and will guard and be very protective of their 'pack'. So to dump a dog with those strong instincts will trigger inappropriate aggressions. We know that dogs are very sensitive, and fosters/adoptions bring unknown risks and as a family we had to be ready to take that on. They've most likely had trauma in their lives. As a mom of a kid who is not neurotypical, I know that trauma is all about how the individual perceives the interaction - not about what happened. It's why some folks can roll through extreme situations seemingly unscathed and some are forever damaged. Knowing the breed, terrier, they are pretty much "roll with life" type dogs. They obviously CAN be damaged, but it's not very likely. They need to feel secure and know there is a pack leader there for them. First when you approach a new dog, a rescue, it's all about feeling safe and 'ok'. This takes days to months. It can take up to a year. My husband and I had rescues all our lives, except for one purebred labrador and a GSP (at the same time when we first met). All, even the lab & GSP, required adjustment time and leadership. Dogs are pack animals, they are den dwellers - so setting yourself up prior to bringing a dog home is essential. So, the dog we brought home today was no exception to the rule. She shivered and panted the entire drive home. She didn't want to be in the doggie car seat we brought and preferred a lap or two. She was consoled gently and when we arrived home she really wanted to just explore everything. We allowed her to take the lead for the first few hours. She rolled and rubbed on every surface in the house. explored the outside. Loved her new toys that we got especially for her. Our foster Mom was awesome! Provided plenty of information and guidance about our new baby. She is also available to us for anything that might come up. DAR is available for the life of the dog with us. I can't imagine any questions coming up, as we asked plenty. But it is super nice to know that they are there regardless. Ignore the negative reviews. This is a rescue not a "browse" a pup place. You have to be committed and ready to pounce on the opportunity. They are completely volunteer run, so yeah - they have family obligations, pet and foster obligations, work and vacations too. Cut some slack folks! Give Grace where it is needed to people who are willing to sacrifice their time, space and energy to help a worthy animal find a forever home. read more

Holy cow! She gave a dog that was biting my daughter and now invents a story (to be fair my ex was inventive so maybe she gave a crazy story). This is one more reason this Animal rescue needs a bad review. I have never NEVER hit a woman or a dog. Before you make up a story you really should verify even a fraction of the story is truthful. I'm obviously dealing with Davis Animal Rescue that will do anything to save its name. The dog they gave us was biting everyone. Not because it was hit. I assume it was a scared dog. I know it was a biting dog before I ever laid eyes on it and I know it bit my ex and my daughter before I ever saw the dog. It didn't ever get hit by me. I also never saw my ex or daughter hit the dog. We gave it distance and tried to give it hugs with gentle pets. I have owned 7 dogs prior to this dog. I have trained them all. NONE were ever hit. Although I do rub dogs noses near their pee as puppies. That is hard and only done a couple times before I just use a "NO". I am good to my dogs. We couldn't be happier about our amazing rescue dog Bandit from Davis Animal Rescue (DAR). We lost our beloved dog in August and we knew she could never be replaced but thought if we could rescue a dog she would be happy about that. Bandit is such a great cattle dog mix and the DAR volunteers were so helpful with the process and answering all the questions we had. They even met us an hour from their home late at night to accommodate our schedule. If we decide to get another dog we would seek a rescue from DAR first. We got a female lab from DAR earlier this year. We understood she was a rescue but had no idea regarding the level of PTSD she had experienced. She took a couple weeks to begin to calm down around my husband and me and allow us near her and to touch her. Finally, after months, we became "family" or a pack. But six months later, she still cannot be around any other people or dogs! No one can get near her except my husband and me. We love our Honey, but she will definitely need specialized training to adapt and overcome her fears. Meanwhile, we spayed her a month after she arrived and have reached out numerous times to DAR for our $50 refund, but they have never responded. So we invested $600 in a dog that cannot go for a walk (she refuses to move), a hike, or a camping trip, can't be around anyone without barking, lunging, and cowering, and all of these behaviors DAR said were normal for rescues. Overall, I don't believe that DAR was really honest with us about Honey, and they've blown off our efforts to be reimbursed for her spay surgery. I would not recommend them as a rescue agency. read more

I tried for months to adopt a a doggy named starbrite. I left messages and emails through adopt a pet . I even resubmitted the interest form and application multiple times. Sadly I gave up and adopted from a different shelter. I just hope starbrite found her forever home. I decided to extend my fur family once again, as I skimmed through adopt a pet, I found the perfect one.... once I saw she is in the care of DAR my heart sank because I know it's pointless to submit an application for her . It seems to me like the company is unorganized or is simply not in a rush to find forever homes. If you're swamped with emails and calls maybe hire a volunteer or someone designated to Online inquiries. Seems like there are lots of people like myself, who try and try to adopt from DAR , responding to emails should not be so difficult. Updated to reflect the idea that we are racist. Not remotely racist. Don't even think the foster was of color, though I (Matthew's wife) am. And also we paid for a trainer immediately so we certainly can be "bothered" for our dog. Also as stated below, we did follow the contract but we were ignored and never reimbursed. We went with DAR because it had good reviews on Google (which I can't find anymore). There were so many issues starting from the beginning. The communication was extremely short, and delayed, but I gave them the benefit of the doubt assuming short staffed. Our puppy was advertised as a "pure-bred" Border Collie- Australian Shepherd mix. The person who was fostering her showed up 20 minutes late, and we were waiting in the cold rain. She showed up and the dog reeked of perfume. Nice lady but very unprofessional. Naturally we instantly fell in love with the puppy and took her home. The paperwork and the foster parent said she had no worms and while I understand puppies get worms and her treatments were not yet complete, she had a very clear, serious worm problem. She also had fleas. The foster parent also told us that the puppy never had any accidents and the puppy had accidents instantly and regularly. Fine, its a puppy. We noted the worms (and fleas) issue to DAR and she completely shrugged it off. We never got the $50 refund that was promised for the spay (even though we sent proof within the timeframe). Lastly, as the puppy grew, everyone commented on our "husky". We got her DNA tested and this dog is a Husky Pitbull mix. We were very unprepared to train this high-maintenance breed and it came as a total surprise. Lesson learned! read more

I can't believe I'm having to post such review for an animal rescue organization. I submitted an application to DAR expressing an interest in a dog called Teejay, despite reading the reviews. However, post multiple attempts to reach them via animal as that's the only mean of communication with them, it's been at least a week and I haven't heard back from them even once. Sometimes, people post reviews out of anger but for this organization, it's really true of the lack communication on their end. At the least they should let a person know where or not their application was accepted, if not, then why. Anyways, as I told them that neither I will adopt from their shelter nor trust their adoption process and information based on bad experience of multiple people in the past. DAR is not in the business of matching dogs with new homes, instead they hold onto them. I applied twice for the same pup, who by the way is still on their web site. I have reached out several times to no avail. Finally they responded by saying that if the feel an applicant is a potential match they will contact you. If not the applicant did not meet their criteria we are looking for. Does that sound like they are being fair?? The poor pups that are there may never get a shot at a forever home. We met our kitten in the dark in a parking lot. Bad judgment on my part. Poor little guy reeked of cigarette smoke. I felt almost obligated to take him despite his nervous disposition and poor hygiene just to 'rescue' him. She claimed that he was just bathed. He had a horrible case of ear mites that has been a battle to resolve and also roundworms. Trying to keep my other animals parasite free is a battle. When I emailed with my concerns they finally responded some days later, DAR said the kitten had been dewormed and the vet 'never noted' ear mites. They over charge for the lack of services provided Our vet let us know....that our newly adopted neutered boy cat is actually a female and also has fleas. (S)He is part of our family now, but I would not adopt from DAR again. I commend them for saving animals from 'kill' shelters, but they should really work on the other side of the business so the animals they save are healthy and happy and good matches for their new families. read more

They care not only about the pets but also about the prospective adopters. They prioritized me after my first attempt to adopt did not happen because someone else got first in adopting the dog. My experience with DAR really went off pretty much without a glitch. All steps of the adoption process followed each other as expected. I did do follow up on a few of my emails when I didn't hear back right away but this may have been more about my eagerness than any lagging on their part. I always heard back immediately then. The young woman who met us with the dog seemed very knowledgeable about the dog's disposition and everything proved correct. DAR might be a little more expensive than other rescues, but for me personally, it's more about the choice of available dogs than it is about saving money. I really have no complaints and we love our new family addition. We were a good match for this shy dog, as we have a quiet household which I think was really important to help our little guy bloom, and DAR knew that. read more

First and foremost, I have to say that our rescue dog is so sweet and cuddly and loveable. What I appreciate about DAR is that they took the time to ask the questions about our family, lifestyle, and location. Then, they matched us with the most perfect dog for us. They told us to bring a list of questions, and so we asked them about: his favorite food, behaviors we should watch for, potty habits, health, etc. They gave us great advice. One example is that our dog was previously crate trained, and to start him at our home with crate training for the first few days, and see how he does. With that being said, we have had him for 4 months, and he has adjusted really well. Consistent follow up with his training has been the key to ensuring a normal, established routine for potty runs and indoor training. On that thought, I felt like I should say my story and my experience with DAR (Davis Animal Rescue). *Disclaimer* this my experience, and what I witness going through DAR and my adoption process with getting my dog, I cannot speak for anyone else. I will also sometimes refer the word "WE" because my fiancee was also very involved with the process and even now (present day) with DAR. I will start off by saying that we did not plan on adopting or even going through any shelter for our first dog. We originally wanted to Shop and not Adopt (I know, not cool, but we were first time dog owners and had heard horror stories about adopting), we were looking around at different breeders in our local area of sacramento but it wasn't quite puppy season as we were looking in August and to be honest, it was expensive. So we decided to look at just a few shelters (online) and see if they had any puppies. That was when we came across DAR, they had a picture of a puppy named May Day on their website and we sent them an email about the adoption process. They got back to us, had us fill out the adoption form, and send in a home inspection video. This was our first time ever going through any shelter or adoption place so we really had no idea what to expect. So that's why I cannot say it was the best adoption process I have ever gone through because I cannot compare it to any! But I will say, it was a great and perfect process for ME. They were honest about the only puppy of that specific litter they had left was May Day's sister and she was the smallest of the bunch. they explained how they received the puppies and what condition they were in, gave us a folder FULL of different types of Veterinarian care she had received since they recieved her and her silblings, and ect. As a first time dog owner, I HAD NO CLUE WHAT I WAS DOING! DAR promised me and my fiancee that they would help us out even after the adoption AND THEY DID! We had emailed them over anything! They gave us trainer information, boarding information, told us what to stay away from and constantly reminded us that THEY would be there. And they were and still are! I don't know any other shelter or adoption services that would do that. We are truly grateful for the experience we received and are still receiving. I believe in this organization so much, I refer my family and my closest friends! It really makes me sad to see some of the 1-star reviews because this is NOT what this DAR rescue is for me or my fiancee. My final thought on DAR: They were honest to us from the start and did not misconstrue any information in any way, when we asked questions they answered it and more, they continue helping us whenever we needed it, they are a rescue that I trust and I recommend to others, the individuals associated with the rescue are selfless and caring individuals. This rescue is not for profit, they truely do it because they care for the animals. If you are concerned with how this organization does its adoptions, please do your own research and ask questions and voice your concerns prior to committing to take over the care of your rescue. We adopted a wonderful, sweet, healthy dog from DAR in January 2019. The DAR volunteers that we encountered with our adoption really cared about the dog and made sure he went to a good home. The rescuers were easy to work with and were quick to respond to our application and any questions that we had. We've adopted dogs from two other rescues in the past and our experience with DAR was just as smooth and successful as my other experiences. Thank goodness for rescue groups like DAR. read more

We worked with DAR to help us find the perfect addition to our family. I had some difficulty getting a hold of them at times, but that was also true of the majority of rescue groups I contacted. We were looking at a number of dogs and they either didn't seem to fit our family lifestyle or they had already been adopted. The DAR team then recommended Danny. After reading about Danny, we thought it would be a good fit too. When we told the DAR team we were interested in Danny, things moved very quickly. After doing all of the requirements, within a few days we met with the DAR team and was introduced to Danny. He was perfect. We have had Danny (now Charlie) for over a month now and he is a wonderful addition to our family! He is such a sweet and loving puppy! His favorite place to be is cuddled up with someone. We are working with a trainer to help us with some of his (minor) naughty puppy behaviors and also to help acclimate the cats. He is doing great and we are beyond thrilled with our new family member! Communication was difficult. At times I received conflicting messages...not always very prompt. DAR's characterization made it seem as if he were calm and friendly, and is purebred. (though a mixed breed...it turned out the breeds weren't actually known) The dog turned out to be high energy and difficult to manage around other animals. This was not shared. These people are dog snobs. We've submitted multiple applications to adopt dogs and never heard back. We are HUGE dog lovers and our home would no doubt be a great place for a dog. We'll find one somewhere else. read more

Boy, I do wish I had checked out Yelp before rescuing our dog from Davis Animal Clinic. Like the other review, very dissatisfied with my experience with this rescue. After a ridiculous amount of my information to ensure we are a trustworthy family to adopt, they do not hold themselves to the same standards. They charge MUCH MORE than any other rescue I have seen, less than truthful on dog info, breed, age, etc.. DO YOUR HOMEWORK before accepting a dog from DAR to ensure it is what you applied for. Rescue and adoption is noble and life changing for both the 2 and 4 legged members. It is not to be exploited and marred. I reached out to DAR out several times in attempt to discuss the multiple issues and concerns with no serious reply. I have no doubt they care for animals, but it appears to be for profit, and at adopter's expense. read more
