I'm always on the lookout for good BBQ, and it's nice that in Hawaii we are getting more and more…read moreoptions. So when I was in Kihei not too long ago, I settled on this joint. The wagon shares a lot with a seafood place and what I think was a shave ice stand. There was plenty of off-street parking. It was a blazing hot day, made worse by pavement and a lack of shade or much greenery. You have to walk over some gravel to place and get your order. The window of the truck is very high; I could barely reach it. They do take credit cards. The owner is nice and chatty, and was busy flirting with the young women in line in front of me. Since I never know if I'll be back to a BBQ place, I always go for a sampler plate. The three meat option set me back $25, but the portions were generous and could easily feed two, or maybe even three if their appetites were light. I don't care for coleslaw, so I asked for a double heap of potato salad. But my request was forgotten and I ended up with coleslaw anyway. I was told I could change it, but I didn't want to waste food. The owner said it was pineapple coleslaw and that people who didn't like coleslaw liked it. (I didn't care for it.) There were some tables and chairs but no umbrellas or shade. I was told the unbrellas kept getting blown away or stolen. I didnt want to eat in the car so I sat at one of the tables and hoped for a breeze. The meats I chose were brisket, chicken, and pork ribs. The brisket was best, soft with a nice smoke ring. I tried the house-made BBQ sauce; it was the thin and vinegary type. It was okay, but mostly I went without it. The chicken is usually my favorite, but it came in second here, being a little on the dry side. The biggest disappointment was the pork ribs. The meat was really tough and had to be dragged away, kicking and screaming, from the bone. (It should fall right off.) I liked the potato salad. If I ever go back here, I'll just order a half-pound or pound of brisket by itself.

Patio table was in the shade, line moved fast, excellent service, and quick delivery of our food. I got the Bodacious Bagel & Lox. Outstanding! When I ordered the cashier did tell me that the egg on the menu was a mis-print. Glad she let me know up front, but wondering why it's still described that way on the website. I also ordered a mimosa with cranberry juice. I was told to give the bartender a couple minutes to make it and then where to pick it up. Stood there for a few minutes with no bartender insight but a glass of sparkling wine on the bar. When she finally arrived she said there was no juice type listed on the receipt. The bagel and arugula salad that came with it were amazing! Hubby got scrambled eggs and their furiaki potatoes. Great seasoning, he thought they were a little heavy on the garlic. Very friendly staff and for an open-air restaurant seemed clean, even with the chickens coming and going. We also didn't like that we were expected to add a tip when ordering. Maybe a Hawaii thing, but I tip on service, so being expected to tip when placing an order automatically makes me tip lower since I don't know what to expect. But left cash after. Don't know who picked it up or if it was pooled.

When we were going through the selection process and tasting each vendor's food, it was clear who had the best and most beautiful presentation (and we tried a lot of great food!). Chris really added a personal touch that I don't think would have existed with some of the larger vendors. We only had a day of wedding coordinator, so all meetings were held with us, and every meeting was met with courtesy and delicious snacks. Chris is not only a chef, but a great host, so he understands exactly what is needed to cater a successful party. It's not only about the food, but it's about the service, and the service at our wedding was also phenomenal. From beginning to end of our process Chris listened to what we wanted, but also made lots of suggestions to help get us thinking. Still when we talk to our friends about our wedding, they still rave about the food, and for us that was the priority. We can only hope that he opens up a fine dining restaurant on Maui one day (we can dream), with his wonderful partner Jane.
