Smoke & Spice Maui - Pulled pork to order

    Smoke & Spice Maui

I'm always on the lookout for good BBQ, and it's nice that in Hawaii we are getting more and more…read moreoptions. So when I was in Kihei not too long ago, I settled on this joint. The wagon shares a lot with a seafood place and what I think was a shave ice stand. There was plenty of off-street parking. It was a blazing hot day, made worse by pavement and a lack of shade or much greenery. You have to walk over some gravel to place and get your order. The window of the truck is very high; I could barely reach it. They do take credit cards. The owner is nice and chatty, and was busy flirting with the young women in line in front of me. Since I never know if I'll be back to a BBQ place, I always go for a sampler plate. The three meat option set me back $25, but the portions were generous and could easily feed two, or maybe even three if their appetites were light. I don't care for coleslaw, so I asked for a double heap of potato salad. But my request was forgotten and I ended up with coleslaw anyway. I was told I could change it, but I didn't want to waste food. The owner said it was pineapple coleslaw and that people who didn't like coleslaw liked it. (I didn't care for it.) There were some tables and chairs but no umbrellas or shade. I was told the unbrellas kept getting blown away or stolen. I didnt want to eat in the car so I sat at one of the tables and hoped for a breeze. The meats I chose were brisket, chicken, and pork ribs. The brisket was best, soft with a nice smoke ring. I tried the house-made BBQ sauce; it was the thin and vinegary type. It was okay, but mostly I went without it. The chicken is usually my favorite, but it came in second here, being a little on the dry side. The biggest disappointment was the pork ribs. The meat was really tough and had to be dragged away, kicking and screaming, from the bone. (It should fall right off.) I liked the potato salad. If I ever go back here, I'll just order a half-pound or pound of brisket by itself.

So if you want to place or take out order? I highly recommend putting in the order online and then going into pick it up. We got the Loco moco with Poached eggs and white rice. First time having a Loco Moco and I heard that this was the place to get it at, so I'm glad we got a good experience! Eggs were perfectly cooked and the entire combination of the beef and rice and eggs and pickled onions was really good together! Came with a nice macaroni salad and also some lettuce to get some veggies in, haha. Overall, there was quite a line here on a Sunday morning, so it's a good sign that this place has good food.

Table side service would have been preferable. It was an eclectic selection of foods with us choosing an açaí bowel, fish & green bean fries, and beets/goat cheese salad. The combination of food worked well for our family and was certainly tasty. We downed every single bite and licked the bowls clean. No leftovers to be had here! The green bean fries are to die for and this is where I hated that I had to stand in line for an additional order :( My kiddos had a blast naming the neighborhood chickens. I suspect those chickens were disappointed that we had no crumbs to spare for them!

I had their Deep Fried Teri Chicken with Miso Soup. You may be asking why that sounds familiar. It's because that's the exact same dish from Zushis, one of their neighbors in Lahaina. The owner of Zushis moved back to Japan and her recipe was given to R.V.N. It tastes exactly the same and I just couldn't believe it! I haven't had the Deep Fried Teri Chicken in years and I was so happy to have it again. We also had their Combo Plate Pork & Peas and Pork Adobo which was excellent as always. All of their food is still the same. Come support a local business from Lahaina aiming to get back to success and better days before the Lahaina Wildfires of August 2023. The owners are very friendly and continue to make excellent food for all.

BUT, seafood here is over the top, my wife had a white fish like ONO, but too long a name to spell. Walked in before 5:00pm with no reservation for a party of four. Well, that was a mistake. Despite idle wait staff and maybe only five occupied tables out of 20-30 total they made us wait for about a half hour. The reason was other people made reservations and were expected. When they finally sat our party the restaurant was still 2/3 empty. There was really no reason to keep us waiting that i could see. When you see someone in the party is disabled and using assistive devices you should be more accommodating. It kind of felt like we were being punished for not having a reservation. Also, expect a 3% service charge for the back of the house. Really, for the prices they charge for mahi fragments you could pay those people without a surcharge. Portions here are tiny. My mahi fragments were dry, over spiced and served with two unseasoned baby bok choi leaves and a slice of grilled tomato. For the price of almost $40.00. The beer was good and so was our server so they got one star for that. Otherwise, this place is touristy, overpriced and the maitre d' is slow on the uptake. Overall, there are plenty of great restaurants on Maui, recommend you try one of those.

When we were going through the selection process and tasting each vendor's food, it was clear who had the best and most beautiful presentation (and we tried a lot of great food!). Chris really added a personal touch that I don't think would have existed with some of the larger vendors. We only had a day of wedding coordinator, so all meetings were held with us, and every meeting was met with courtesy and delicious snacks. Chris is not only a chef, but a great host, so he understands exactly what is needed to cater a successful party. It's not only about the food, but it's about the service, and the service at our wedding was also phenomenal. From beginning to end of our process Chris listened to what we wanted, but also made lots of suggestions to help get us thinking. Still when we talk to our friends about our wedding, they still rave about the food, and for us that was the priority. In the end we know we not only made the right decision, but also formed a lifelong connection in the process. We can only hope that he opens up a fine dining restaurant on Maui one day (we can dream), with his wonderful partner Jane.
