Cheryl can't cut hair. If a stylist has no concept of shape or proportion, she can't be good. Her skills are horrible also. She basically just can't cut hair. She can't cut layered hair. so that means any short cut, whether women or men, pixie, any type of layered cut. Incompetent. It's like hiring someone to prune your roses that is supposed to know how to prune roses but has no idea how to prune roses and has no idea about shape or proportion. She is not a natural at this. I have fine hair, I showed him a photo of the cut I would like he provided his recommendation. He knows what he's doing, he's a pro at it. I wished there were ten stars on Yelp to represent how AWESOME Gary is! I had the pleasure of meeting him at a Moms Club event in San Ramon last night. The haircut only took 20 mins due to the long lines but I left there feeling so so impressed with what he was able to do. I can't wait to see what he can do when I go back to his salon for a full treatment! For years I have not been successful in finding stylists who can manage the "wild" waves and body in my hair. I mean I have tried over 30 salons in the greater Bay area and seem stylists in Japan and the Philippines. I have gotten cuts, Chi treatments to manage my crazy hair. My hair is dry, puffy, and hard to manage. Imagine that on a 5 foot 2 person. It was like walking around in a mushroom cap. Now enter Gary. He is very easy to talk to. He listened to what my issues with the hair were and provided great feedback.Gary looked at my hair and right away told me what he would do to take off the weight He took the time to explain to me how he would cut it, why the cut will work, and after the cut explained to me how to blow dry it , tools I can use so it will look its best. I probably won't have time for that since I am a full time mom but so far it's looked great just out of the shower and go. You can feel that he genuinely cares about what the client needs. He only worked with scissors, not texture tools or only funky stuff. I LOVED how it turned out! My head felt lighter and it completely changed my look. Also he gave me three product samples that will help style my hair. How awesome is that, free stuff after an amazing cut. As a busy mom of two little ones, I live with the pony tail look almost daily. It's exciting now I can wear my hair down again and I don't have to stylist-hop anymore. I found Gary the best way to find a stylist. A woman I saw every now and then always had wonderful looking hair. Like me, she has curly hair and not everyone can work well with that. After seeing her through 3 great styles (and after becoming less and less satisfied with my gal), I asked her who cuts her hair and she sent me Gary's way. I love love love Gary! The man knows what he is doing and he will help you make the most of your hair, however you like to do it (I'm a wash-n-go gal). I've been getting my hair cut and styled by Gary since the summer of 2018 (I first found his business through Yelp and was impressed by the consistent 5-star ratings). I had hair growing down to my lower back, have always had long hair, but was never dedicated to styling it; I work at an animal hospital so my hair was always in a bun/ponytail, and I've never had the patience to do anything with it. Long story short, I was ready for a short hair style. When I came into Heads By Design, I knew instantly I had made the right choice. Gary had been nothing short of phenomenal. Unlike many hair stylists I've been to, Gary listened to what I had to say. I showed him pictures of short hair styles I was interested in, but I wasn't sure if they would complement my facial structure (I know some styles suit people with rounded faces, heart-shape faces, etc.). Although willing to create any style I asked for, Gary worked with me to decide what styles complemented my face, as well as styles that could be easily maintained due to my lifestyle and unwillingness to do a lot of styling at home. By the end of my appointment, I had a fantastic hair style that I was absolutely in love with. On top of that, Gary took the time to go over basic care for maintaining my hair style, and didn't try to pressure me into using his hair products (he only recommended using products that would provide the desired results, so whatever I liked). Since last year, I've been going to Gary every few months to restyle my hair. Every time I've gone in, we change it up just a bit for fun. Gary always takes my lifestyle into consideration, and has never pressed for a style I didn't 100% like and approve. Good cut for long hair. I measure the quality of the cut by the length I can go without my next haircut. In the past, I would look in the mirror, hate the hair, then book an appointment. I found a great stylist on the Peninsula, but work brought me into the Tri-Valley area (I prefer to cut during my lunch hour.) It has been months since I last saw Gary, and the style is still looking great. I will be setting up another appointment when I see a lot of split ends and actually need a trim. read more

I get a hair cut twice a year because it takes six months for the last bad cut to grow out. I have very curly hair with different types of curls. Its just had to get a cut that looks good after the first styling. Gary gave me a cut and told me why he was cutting it that way. He recomended product but made it perfectly clear that this cut was not about selling. It was about finding me the easiest, low maintenance style that makes me look marvellous. I did buy some product, but only because I had none. He also gave me some samples. The results were the haircut I had imagined for myself. The texture was better, the color looked better, I felt great. I would recomend Gary every time. I'm looking forward to my next appointment.
