I have been struggling with graying since my 20s and now that I am in my 40s, I needed to find a stylist who understood the balance of growing out my roots and blending it with ash blond highlights. Since I havre naturally dark hair, I was told by so many stylists that it's a "process" to get that ashy color and it would take a few visits. However, after almost a decade of dealing with orangey highlights, it was time for a change. I did love my old stylist, but a new salon owner made it difficult to book with her. Thankfully, I found Assilah Latifi at Lush Salon. She has a deep understanding of formulating the right shade for you to flatter your skin tone and natural hair color! She gently explained that dying your roots with a dark permanent color would affect the highlights as that root grows out and make the effect orange. In one long session, she was able to cancel that orange and achieve that ashy highlight look I was hoping to get. Not only that, she was extremely professional. It felt like they were extremely selective about who they accept as clients, and not in a professional way, but based on appearance. Specifically, it seemed that women who fit a certain "look" (white, lighter features, thin, and presenting a very polished/luxury image) were treated very differently. To test whether this was just my perception, I conducted a simple comparison. The day after my visit, a friend of mine who fits that exact aesthetic (blonde, model appearance) went in and she was accepted without any issue. The difference in treatment was very clear. This raises serious concerns about discriminatory behavior. No business should be evaluating clients based on looks or perceived status. It's disappointing and honestly unacceptable to see this kind of treatment, especially from a business owned by another woman. People come from different backgrounds, priorities, and paths in life. Some focus on appearance, others on education and career, and neither should determine whether you are treated with respect or even allowed access to a service.
