Was recommended this salon because they "cut curly hair". First visit she cut off so much of my hair where I felt uncomfortable and humiliated but thought it was just a trust the process situation to gain healthier hair. My hair was to my waist and she cut it to where it shrunk to above my shoulders. I cried for days. However when I decided to go again my hair was cut so uneven that it's incredibly hard to maintain and been having a difficult time to even it out due to the huge difference. You can try to ask for hair care products and what to style with and they will only offer aVeda products and in my case they never worked for my curly hair, straight hair may be a different story. read more

I was apprehensive about going based on reviews. However, I was recommended by a friend with curly hair. This was out third attempt with a stylist as the other two (different salons) have failed miserably. She's not close to us, but I thought, well, we've already had two bad cuts, what's there to lose. To start, yes, kim can be 'too much' for some. She's very upfront and honest. BUT, she begins with, "im here to help, not offend" and once you get past that, you realize it's the truth. Wouldn't you want someone honest giving their opinions?My daughter has thick curly hair. Mostly due to her ethnicity. I never felt she was racist like others have commented. And trust me I was waiting for it. Truth be told, my daughters ethnicity has every thing to do with her hair, so why wouldn't I want someone who is knowledgeable in that, to work on her? Why wouldn't I want someone who isn't afraid to say, "oh this is such and such hair, this is why I'm cutting this way, this is why I recommend x y or z!" We spent 2 hours and I was thankful for every minute. She walked us through so much, and although some was obvious, we walked away with an entirely better understanding of how to take care of her hair. Now, our next appt will not be as long as this one because it will be maintenance from here on out. She was not pushy at all. Didn't force me to buy any Aveda products. Did she recommend stuff, duh, it's top quality stuff that works wonders and that's partly her job. We ended up buying stuff because I want to invest into my daughters hair and the way Kim made us feel was incredible. But even more so, my daughter felt good. She felt educated, she felt confident and knowledgeable in how to tend to her hair, and she felt beautiful. I can't really put a price on that. We will definitely be back. I can't really say enough good things about this salon! Kim is amazing, I had so much color correction and calico colors from going through a half a dozen "colorists" within a year that I was amazed and pleasantly surprised with the beautiful natural toned blonde she gave me. Before she began she covered my eyes and than took them away and asked what the first thing I saw was, I responded "my hair" (bleachy blonde) not knowing where she was going with this exercise. After she had given me both highlights and lowlights and had transformed my hair to an ashier darker blonde, she did the same exercise. I was suprised with how it drew all the focus into my green blue eyes and flattered my skin tone so much better! The best part was that she even gave me detailed instructions about how to care for and nurture my fine, dry, fragile hair so I could grow it long and healthy again. I was actually sad about moving to Studio City just two months after finding her and sending my friends to her. Studio City has an Aveda salon right down the street from me and I went in, worried about yet another colorist's interpretation of my hair color. I asked if the girl could call Kim and ask what she had done since Kim had written lots of notes about everything she did. My new hairstylist called and got every last detail from colors, to placement and recreated what Kim had done very closely!! So helpful and sweet!! Thankyou Kim! When I moved to Bakersfield, I often wondered if I would have to make a special day trip to get my hair done in LA.. So.. I waited and waited and waited.. until a friend decided on an intervention.. Yup!! My hair was that bad that my friend had to beg me to get it done :) So, I figured its been that long and my hair is half red half black (faded out).. how bad can it really get.. I called up and had a pleasant conversation with Amber about my hair and what I need done and she set me up with an appointment with April. From the minute I made that call until I walked out with a fabulous haircut and color, I was just sooo happy. Well.. even after I was really happy but you get the point!! April was fabulous and so were all the other girls. It really felt like a pampering session with the girls. April and I chit chatted. April's mom (Kim) was also there with a few other girls and they were all very sweet, extremely knowledgeable and just great over all. The best thing was that they discussed my likes and dislikes, gave me good advice on my hair, type of color and style that would suit me and my lifestyle. Furthermore, they even spent extra time showing me how to style my hair when I am at home so I am not lost when I try to do it myself. First: this is my first haircut in over a decade. My hair was down to the middle of my butt, wavy/curly, and difficult to manage. I spent 16 years of my life always being disappointed with subpar haircuts- I have very thick hair so the usual "one size fits all" haircut definitely did NOT fit me. I came here because I had read it was the place to go for curly hair. Went in with an idea of a curly shag with heavy bangs. I even had a ton of pictures off the internet for reference. I had originally asked her NOT to razor my hair because it thins out my hair which is unflattering to my round face. I asked her to thin out my bangs just a tad and she went buck wild razoring the rest of my hair. It now looks completely awful. My curls are gone and now I'm just left with uneven, thin, stringy hair. VERY disappointed! read more

Kim is super. I drive a good 30 minutes to visit her and have her deal with my thinning locks. And I don't mean door locks. My hair used to be better. In fact, I wish Kim could have seen me a few years ago when it was thicker and I could have considered taking advantage of her coloring expertise. I was impressed to see some of the great results she has had with her female clients that I would have been willing to try something unusual. Not so unusual nowadays. Since this was the first time, I was apprehensive.... as I'm totally freaky about how my hair cut and color was going to look. Aaah! My appointment was with a stylist named April......who had gorgeous hair herself. Apparently, (as I had been told), she was a great colorist, and I am very picky who touches my hair). I've been seeing Kimberly since I moved back to Bakersfield 8 years ago and I've never had a bad cut and for a curly girl, that is saying a lot. I recommend Kim to any curly girl that asks because cutting curly hair is difficult for most stylists and so frustrating for the curly girl because a bad cut takes forever to grow out. Kim is the owner. Very very knowledgable. If you want products she will give you exactly what you need and explain to you why. She explains her reasons behind a cut and or color suggestion for you. I appreciate this because I know zilch about hair. JUST MAKE ME BEAUTIFUL!!!! =) Personally, I think Kim is one of the smartest and most knowledgable stylists in the Bakersfield area. The other gal working there, (can't recall her name), is super sweet and the customers I've seen love her work and seem so confident when they leave. If you don't know Aveda products, they are the best I've found. I have damaged hair from going to a rookie stylist that didn't know quite what she was doing... chopped off all of my hair and I've been nursing it back to life. I had taken my 13 year old daughter to Kim twice. Our third appointment had to rescheduled due to a conflict I forgot about. Kim was annoyed but we got a new appt in two weeks. 9 days later...9 days!...Kim called to say she wouldn't cut my daughter's hair ever again because "I had stood her up twice" What??? No only was that a lie, but I've know Kim for ten years! I questioned her reasoning and she said, "You rescheduled" She may be a fine hairdresser, but she has no customer service or business sense. I've been seeing Kim for my curly hair since I was 16. That was over 15 years ago. No one else does a better job for curly hair, and my color is always well done and natural looking. I've recommended her to many people who have become regular clients. And she not only was a friendly knowledgable person she did what she wanted and I love it our appointment was a little late so I was out if there later than expected. I found this salon on yelp and despite the bad review about Kim, I had an absolutely wonderful experience. I had very over processed hair and a lot of breakage. Kim was friendly and so knowledgeable and walked me through the process of healing my hair. She took my warn out breakage and turned it into something I can run my fingers through again. I have/had long thick curly hair and for some years I've been through many stylists. Usually at the end of every experience I never "LOVED" my hair. It was ok I guess. But for the last couple years I've been wanting a particular type of cut but no one has been able to do it! I've explained and showed pictures but no one has got it right. I called today to make a long overdue appointment to cut my hair. I read reviews and it seems as through Kimberly is who to go to if you have curly hair. April answered and said that Kimberly would call me back to ask some questions before making an appointment. She called at noon and asked her the routine "what is your hair like" questions. She said that clients like me who only get a hair cut once a year are the hardest to please. When i told her that really I am not hard to please and the reason I haven't had it cut was because I went to a girl for a quidad cut (bad cut) and that i have a 4,3,1.5 year old and a newborn. Life got busy and hair came last. She said that well in her 40 years experience that I would be the hardest to please still...ok whatever. She then went on to say that it would be 2 hours and start at 195. Still fine. She also wanted me to be sure not to bring my children-which I didn't plan on except for my newborn. I asked if it would be ok if my mother came with me to hold my newborn (3weeks). She wanted to know why and what would i need to do because that 2 hours was very detailed and it wouldn't work if I had to stop for any reason. I said probably nothing but that I didn't leave my newborns for that long. She ended the conversation with well maybe I need to wait until i can come alone. It was the most abrasive and offensive conversation I've ever had with anyone much less with someone who I was a potential paying customer. Will never attempt to make an appointment with her again. I'd rather pay twice the amount to someone who is kind. read more

Kim is ridiculous. I went in wanting a simple asymmetrical cut (which I've had multiple times and showed her pictures of me with the cut) with some highlights. She decided that she needed to educate me on everything that was wrong with my hair as far as the way it naturally fell, cowlicks, etc. I was very adamant that I didn't want the back cut above my neckline. She cut my hair above my neckline anyways. While proceeding to tell me to purchase a set of clippers and showing me how to cut it myself. When it came time to highlight my hair, I asked for a book and she said they just mix their own colors and I had to tell her what reds I liked in her hair?!? Next came time for her to show me how to style my hair, which again wasn't necessary as I've had this cut before. She choose to make the process about her ego rather than about a cut and color.
