The trim handle wasn't damaged. But the old cartridge was for sure damaged with the stem sticking out. Sure, the cartridge would need to be replaced anyways, but taking it out in the first place while not familiar with the fixture could damage the valve itself which could be a much worse problem.

One thing I especially appreciated was that he put on boot covers before coming inside. I don't allow outside shoes on the upstairs carpet, and without me even having to ask, he took the initiative to protect my home. The plumber looked in my shower and saw gaps in the grout. I also had him cut a hole in the wall to check behind the handle. No problem there. But the best thing was they offer a free drain camera inspection after clearing the drain.
