The bf and I were on the hunt for a low key bar after dinner on a Saturday and Yelp led me to Hazel. Art, Bar, Community - I'm in! Right on South Pearl St. and not very busy at about 8 or 9 pm on a Saturday, they've only been open about a month. They claim to be a neighborhood bar and let me tell you, for being just a bar baby, this place had me feeling right at home. Service was fantastic and super friendly and everyone was so approachable, even the owner who was behind the bar. They don't have a drink menu, but I was encouraged to order anything my little heart desired and they would get it done. Whiskey mule for me and an old fashioned for the mans and these bad boys were skkkrronngg and delicious - exactly how we like them. And as if the drinks and fantastic service weren't enough, Hazel also had my fave old school vibes coming at me from all angles. A little early 2000s music here (hi there, All 4 One "I Swear" and Shania Twain " Still the one", I've missed you!), some dope street sign portrait art hanging there, and my favorite throwbacks of the night: an old school, wall mount, turn handle pencil sharpener right next to an awesome old cigarette machine that now dispenses $5 art. I went in really wanting to like this place. There's so much potential here, but unfortunately the experience we had just didn't live up to that. The drinks were mediocre at best. We tried 3 different cocktails off the menu - one was pretty good, but the other two were rough. Dull flavors and hastily made (which I totally would have understood if it was busy at the time). The service was about as good as the drinks. The drinks were made fast and the bartender was checking in with us regularly, so points for that! But the bartender's tone was very unwelcoming and arrogant. Also, the bartending was just clumsy, with bartenders bumping into each other, making a huge mess on the bartop, and even splashing us with drinks they were making a couple times. Maybe this place was just having an off night. I'd be willing to give them the benefit of the doubt and try it again, but I'd recommend not setting your expectations too high. read more

Saturday, We had been wondering around Pearl looking for a margarita, and all the Mexican places were full up. We walked right past this joint and almost skipped it, but one of our party made the decision and we went it. Really chill, unassuming bar. The margaritas we found there were better than the ones I've previously had down the street. Service was chill. Servers were relaxed and fun. The bartender on the night of November 9th 2023 was SO rude. My friend and I were trying to order drinks and while we kindly asked what drink this one lady had at the bar (that he obviously had made) he responded with "i made that a long time ago i don't have time to remember that". He was just rude and very short tempered for no reason. Wouldn't recommend coming here. This art themed bar is great. They have a cocktail program that has many creative and traditional drinks. I am quite impressed with their whiskey drinks. They have the tables covered with paper for drawing with crayons. They supply adult coloring books for you to draw in. There is also an old cigarette machine in the front which has been filled with fun are crafts and projects. It's a really cool idea. Plus this place sits right on old south Pearl so the location is great. They don't serve food but it seems they let you bring in something you order from somewhere else. This is such a unique spot on S Pearl Street! We stoped in after dinner for a night cap. There is a welcoming vibe. Pretty dark and loud music but not a turnoff. Immediately upon sitting at a high top, someone came over to grab our drink order. The drink list was creative. I'm a HUGE peanut butter lover so I had to try the PB&J Old Fashion. It blew me away. Like seriously SO good. Everyone needs to try this. I loved the creative combo. My boyfriend got the regular old fashion which he said was strong AF (which is 100% a good thing and adds a positive approach to this post lol). We then colored some pictures (they have adult coloring books and high quality markers) and admired the art work (that we did not consider buying but were easy on the eyes while hanging). I would love if there were more interactive coloring (think hangman, tic tax toe, etc.) even though we so enjoyed coloring, we noticed a good 15 minutes went by and we didn't say a word to each other because we were so focused on the coloring. Cannot share enough positives about this spot - feels local and high-end, but so damn accessible in every way. We had a lot of fun here. They have a small outdoor seating section with 4-5 tables. The waiter came up and just asked us what type of drink we were in the mood for - liquor type and refreshing or spirits heavy and the bartender surprised us. The two drinks I had were awesome, my boyfriends were good and he liked them, but not exactly what he asked for. Unfortunately I don't know the names of any of the drinks so I wouldn't be able to order them again. But the service was so friendly, and the drink costs are very reasonable. Super cool place with some delicious drinks! This place features local artist's work and I love that! The artwork is always different. The first time I stopped here, it was night time and we were seated outside. They bartenders are really good at recommending drinks. Tell them what you like, for example, I let them know I enjoy strong, fruity drinks but don't like vodka. They made me a Paloma and it was great! My boyfriend told them he's more of a "classic" guy and they gave him an Old Fashioned. Definitely fit the tastes we wanted that night.
