History
Established in 1919.
Homer T. Hayward bought the Porter Lumber Company in Salinas in 1919 and changed its name to the Homer T. Hayward Lumber Company. Homer served as its president from 1919 to 1928, adding six stores over the next five years. In 1928, Arthur C. Hayward became president, and he continued in this role until 1946, through the Great Depression and World War II.
In 1946, Homer M. Hayward, at 24, took charge and expanded rapidly in the post-World War II boom, adding five more stores, including San Luis Mill and Lumber. Homer led the company for 47 years, until 1993. Many of the stores opened after World War II had to be closed,
In 1993, William E. (Bill) Hayward took charge of the company at age 36 and still leads it today. He acquired County Lumber in Santa Barbara and T& H Lumber in Redwood City. Bill added window and door design centers. Still family-owned, today Hayward is based in Monterey and includes seven lumberyards, six Design Centers, and a truss manufacturing facility.
