Hawkins had done an efficient and attractive job replacing the wood flooring in an upstairs hallway after a bathroom plumbing disaster and also gave my kitchen a much-needed facelift with the installation of Armstrong flooring, so when I decided it was time to refinish the hardwood flooring in the living room, dining room and den the decision of who to go with was easy. Carl assessed what was needed and worked up an estimate the following day. It was a big job, consolidating all the dining room and living room furniture into the den while those two rooms were stripped down, sanded, stained and polyurethaned over the course of five working days, then the process flipped with den furniture in the living room while the den floor was restored (four working days). The fumes while curing were noticeable, but not overwhelming and easier to live with than anticipated (although they might be if you have heighteded chemical sensitivities). A long haul, but way worth it. Tulio, the head tech, and his assistant were prompt each morning, walking me through the process of what was going to happen each day, helping select stain colors and advise on 'best care practices. I was particularlly concerned about the teak parquet in the den, but it came out lustrous. They also ripped out the tired old carpeting in the foyer closet and replaced with hard wood for a cleaner, less cluttered look. I should mention that all work was brought to completion at the estimated price, which was lower than the other bid I received without skimping on labor steps or attention to detail. I am espeically happy with my experience and my refinished flooring in my house. The flooring was heavily worn out in some spots and discolored. After looking at reviews for Hawkins online I decided to call them for information and an estimate. A few days from the initial phone call I had Carl (president of Hawkins) come over and look at our floors. After taking down measurements and looking over the floors Carl explained the timeline of things for the refinishing. I was then sent an email with the estimate and next steps included. Two weeks later the refinishing began. "Super Mario" worked on the floors for six days to refinish two bedrooms, a staircase, one living room, one den, kitchen and dinning rooms. The floors were completed in a timely manner. Mario is an expert in his field and was very professional. He kept me updated with the work, answered all my questions and gave me useful information such as how to best maintain the floors. I am so happy with my updated and beautiful floors. I've waited almost a year to write this review since I wanted to see how workmanship would hold up over time: happy to report, I'm still as pleased as the day they finished. Hawkins replaced old dark thin wood flooring and installed brighter but still warm-toned Armstrong Alterna floor in my kitchen (comfortable under foot, easy maintenance, scuff resistant and beautiful), and replaced hard wood flooring in an upstairs hallway, both of which had been badly damaged by plumbing leaks. Also did yeoman's work in repairing a bottom step whose corner had been completely chewed off by a Lab puppy! Carl was very knowledgeable and patient in helping with initial selection of materials, and Julio got the job(s) done with tremendous attention to detail; courteous and pleasant to work with, too. They brought the job in on time and under estimate - a real plus! Was able to take up the old carpet and extend wood flooring into the hall linen closet with the savings and still come out under budget. I highly recommend Hawkins. We had Hawkins redo carpeting in the upstairs of our house, replace carpeting with hardwood throughout the first level and we are/will be purchasing some area rugs as well. Pricing was very competitive but it's the years of experience of this family run business that truly sets Hawkins apart from their competition. The crews that came in to do the work were specialized; one crew does only carpet, the other hardwood and they had all been doing this for years. Their level of experience helps ensure a flawless job. Both crews were on time every day, very professional and courteous, they cleaned up after themselves, and helped set everything back where it should be. There was an ordering issue with one of our products and the first words out of Carl's mouth was "we'll make this right". That kind of customer service and integrity is getting harder and harder to find these days. We interviewed 8 different companies to determine experience level, pricing, wood quality, and project timing. We almost went with another company but we went to Hawkins beautiful showroom and met Gina and Mike (who had just come from a job). He talked about some of the issues we had in our house and exactly what he would do. Never was it a sales pitch and felt like an educational talk. We signed the contract that day. The wood came a few weeks faster than expected, our floors were unlevel in various areas but they worked their magic (and levels/sanders) to make sure the floor would be perfect. Any issue that was brought up was settled immediately and they always walked us through what they would be doing, which I appreciate. I had great experiences with Hawkins. They refinished my hardwood and I was so happy with the work they did I called them back to give me an estimate to replace the carpet on my stairs and replace my kitchen floor with alterna. I had no experience with alterna flooring but they suggested that it would be best for my needs as far as ease of cleaning, styles available, and durability and they were absolutely right. They went out of their way to help me find a color/pattern that would look great with my kitchen as well as the flooring going into the kitchen and the results look fabulous! I was pleased with all the workers who came to my home, they were courteous, on time, and careful when moving my antique furniture. Our Oak hardwood floors were in need of refinishing . I called and set up an appointment with Hawkins to come take a look at them. I set up the appointment to come and give me a quote. The owner Carl Hawkins come out and looked at the floors. He said he would e-mail me the quote that evening. I received the quote and set up a time to do the repairs. Carl said 4 days to do the work.The technician called the day before confirming the job and the next day he showed up. The sanding started and in 3 days they were done. Hawkins Did Multiple Types of Flooring in my house including refinishing, they put new vinyl tile in my kitchen "alterna" , new unfinished wood in my upstairs and refinished it to match what i had in 1 of my bedrooms already . including new treads and risers on my steps , carpet in my basement , the office always answered all my questions be it if i emailed or called . We decided to pull up all our of carpeting (worn) and install luxury vinyl tile with an oak finish in 5 rooms and in our entry foyer a vinyl tile with stone finish. Karl (I believe he is the owner) made a couple of visits to assess our layout and later when the job was underway to check on molding. His installers Mason and Julio were excellent and efficient - the job took a couple of days. They removed the carpet and carefully laid out the tiles in the direction we wanted. Hawkins originally installed our hardwood flooring when we moved in 16 years ago. We called them again when we had water damage and Carl came and estimated the job and Douglas moved the furniture, sanded, stained and polyurethaned the floors beautifully additionally, removing carpeting from stairs and finishing them. Douglas worked very hard and painstakingly to do the job perfectly . We are very happy with the work and are happy to recommend them.
