I had a deeply concerning experience with the front office staff that led me to discontinue care with this practice. I called to cancel my appointment after my husband became unavailable to drive me, as I had been prescribed Valium for the visit. Instead of accepting the cancellation, the front office staff discouraged me from canceling--stating it would create more work for them--and suggested that I take an Uber while under the influence of Valium. This raised serious patient safety concerns. When I asked to speak with Dr. Hau or leave him a message, I was told, "I don't think he will call you back," and the call was abruptly disconnected. Shortly afterward, all of my appointments were canceled without explanation. I also never received a call to confirm my appointment beforehand. After this experience, I noticed I am not the only Google reviewer who has raised concerns about interactions with the front office staff, suggesting this is not an isolated issue. While I am not commenting on Dr. Hau's clinical care, the front office handling was unprofessional, dismissive, and troubling--particularly regarding communication and patient safety. read more

I saw Dr. Hau (the son), both father and son work in this practice. They compassionately fixed my tooth and sent me off. I couldn't be more relieved or happy. note that this review is only for dr. david shen, orthodontist. dr. shen is the absolute best orthodontist i have ever worked with! since i have had braces twice in my lifetime, i've actually dealt with several orthodontists, but none of whom have been as professional, caring, and skilled as dr. david shen. i first came to dr. shen when my lingual sided retainer (aka wire that is bonded to the back side of my teeth to keep them tight and straight) suddenly broke, which caused the slight gap in my two front teeth (aka the buck teeth) to widen at a rather alarming rate. although dr. shen could not fix my retainer in a single visit (and i completely understand why), he did not hesitate to take impressions and recommend a new wire for my retainer, which would ready in just a matter of days. to calm my fears about the widening gap in my two front teeth, he said that the gap wasn't too bad and he would simply squeeze the teeth together when it came time to apply the new retainer. SCORE! 3 days later, i went to see dr. shen again, and he applied the new retainer to my teeth, and true to his word, he squeezed the front two teeth together while applying the wire. the process was slightly uncomfortable (which i expected), and the retainer glue/cement was pretty nasty (which i also expected), and i felt like i was sitting in that chair forever, waiting for the wire to be bonded and glue to be completely dry, BUT, in the end it was all worth it, b/c my teeth looked so much better than i had imagined. not only had dr. shen closed the widening gap in my two front teeth, but he has closed them so that the gap was even smaller than it had been with the old retainer! SCORE AGAIN! even though i was a bit sore, i knew that the soreness was temporary and would go away in just a matter of days, after my teeth had adjusted to the new wire and new position in my mouth. but nothing could take away the happiness i felt everytime i looked into the mirror and saw my straight teeth, sans the big gap! the following week, i received a call from dr. shen, asking me how everything was, was i comfortable and did i have any concerns. everything was great (and still is great), but i really appreciated that personal call from dr. shen himself. not many doctors and dentists do that, so i felt very special that he called me personally! I've been going to Dr Hau for several years now and always had a good experience in cleanings, exams, fillings, crowns, etc. They don't do sleazy things like adding mystery treatments to the bill or suggest pricey treatments or have a treatment "plan". I've been to other dentists that try that crap but that's another story. Some of their dental hygienists can be a bit brutal when it comes to cleaning so keep trying until you find one that won't go medieval on your gums. First, in response to the person getting the unexplained bills, I have gotten a bill or two that were incorrectly accounted for my insurance, but that was a few years ago. I haven't had this problem recently. And when I called it was all handled professionally and promptly. But on to the meat of my time at this office. I have been going here since...1989? My teeth have pretty much been raised by Dr. Hau. I am finally writing this review because as I was getting my cavity taken care of this morning I realized I'd never written one. I've had a handful of cavities in my life and I've never gotten a shot. So Dr. Hau is not only great at giving shots (according to others) but he is also great at drilling out cavities! Let the record show that my cavities have always been caught early, and I am in no way endorsing everyone to go Novocaine free! Also my normal hygienist is Kathy and she is great. She remembers me from my childhood and has always been gentle. And doesn't bring up the fact that I was horrible to my teeth as a child and she would have to work so hard to get all my plaque off. I only hope that my much improve routines make her job easy now! I would (and have) recommend this place to anyone looking for a dentist, even children (I was in the 1st grade when I started). read more

I have been to this dental office for over 20 years. It has always been a straight office. There were no gimmicks in dental charges. Dr. Louis Hau has been my primary dentist for many years until his son Dr. Philip Hau joined the team. Philip is surprisingly gentle in teeth cleaning, compared to the other hygienists in the office. It's taken me a very long time to get this posting in but having seen yet another unexplained bill, I thought I'd get my comments out there. I went to this facility based on a reference from my dentist because I expressed an interest in getting braces. The experience started out poorly because I got lost and when I called in, the receptionist didn't know where the office was located! How the hell does she get into work in the first place? Then as I started talking to her, she asked for my info and it turns out that they didn't even have my appointment on their books. Mind you, I booked this two months in advance. I was so irritated but decided I would give it another chance. I wished then that I just let it go and not waste any additional time. When I was able to get my visit in,it was finally with the orthodontist that I was referred to initially. The visit went well and he was great with my consultation so I thought ok maybe it won't be so bad. He asked me to come back to talk to another dentist who would do my initial extractions so that the orthodontist can start on the invisalign. So I made another appoint and met with Dr. Levine, one of the owners I believe. He seemed nice as well and took moldings of my mouth and so forth. He said that they wouldn't be able to do the extractions until another date which was annoying because I have to make yet another appointment and work it in with my work schedule but I was willing to do so. This is where things went down here for me and never turned around. I never got another phone call from the office to do a follow up or get my appointment. Instead, three months later I get a bill from them but the reason is not listed. When I call the office to ask, the billing department only works on certain days that I seem to keep missing. Poor follow-up, unclear billing, incompetent receptionist, and a continued harassment for payment on something I don't even know what it is for (probably the useless molds that I never got a follow for) has put me in search of a new office that would be interested in my business. read more

Everyone of Dr Shen's San Jose staff is wonderful. I feel welcome each time I visit the office. The wait times are minimal to none. The assistants are very knowledgable and helpful. My Invisalign treatment was affordable and my insurance covered a portion. I just picked up my retainer and I am very happy with the final results. I will refer other pts to Dr Shen. read more

I saw Dr. Philip Hau for my past two hygiene appointments - and was very happy with my experience. He was very friendly and professional and did a thorough job cleaning my teeth (without causing any pain)! I was in and out in less than an hour, and liked that I didn't have to wait long before I was seen. Dr. Hau also gave helpful tips, like how to brush more carefully around the gum line, to help prevent potential dental problems. We have seen Dr. Haul and coming to his office for 15 years. Dr. Haul is great and very conservative. He is not that kind of dentist that tries to do extra work on you for the money. He only does what is necessary. He is very careful in checking our kids teeth.My kids has seen Dr Haul since they started going to the dentist. We love Kathy because she takes her time to clean our teeth and she checks carefully for cavities and give us advice regarding our cleaning. The front desk staff is great and very friendly. I would go back to this office if we still have our old insurance I totally recommend this office to anyone that likes their mouth super clean:-) read more

I've been a patient of Dr. Hau's for years. It says a lot that I continue to do so without insurance rather than changing. I've had crowns, root canals, bridges and many filings, and I'm not willing to trust my teeth to anyone else. All of this work has been pain free and excellent.
