First visit today, and I am so pleased. Since moving to Charlotte a year ago, I had not found an excellent go-to Asian market. Now, I have! It is clean, well-organized, the prices are fair, there's no language barrier, the selection of products (both fresh and shelf) is excellent. I was especially delighted by the fact that they have sushi-grade tuna (not even Whole Foods here carries this) and octopus and true, gluten-free buckwheat soba. They also carry a wide array of FRESH greens and veggies! I so look forward to going back, and hope others will patronize them frequently, too, as small businesses everywhere try to navigate their way through this pandemic. What a gem to find! Hatoya has many Japanese food items like furikake, miso, and of course snacks! What surprised me is the selection of books and a DVD section! There is also a small section for household goods and a nice sized sake and beer section in the back. The staff is friendly, they may not speak a ton of English but that is what makes them so authentic! If you are in the area, definitely pop in to buy some treats! It's worth it, I promise! read more

If you are looking for every variety of Asian rice under the sun Hatoya is for you. Located by the Sky High jumping place, there is plenty of parking. The owners are very nice and they speak English. When my child is with me they always offer a Japanese candy, which seems very exotic to a 9 year old. Speaking of candy, they have an extensive collection of Japanese sweets, perfect for putting together a unique and colorful Christmas stocking, Easter basket or Valentine's gift. read more

This is the place to go when you can't find Japanese items at other Asian stores in the area. I love going here to get shiso leaves (can't find it anywhere else!) and snacks. The chocolate cornets are a little expensive but they're heavenly. read more

Absolutely authentic Japanese grocery store in the town. Japanese food only! This is not a big store, but I can find almost 90% things I need to cook. I love their frozen fishes, variety choice at a reasonable price. I love their frozen tofu stuffs and frozen fish balls. I put these for my homemade hot pot. They also have some vegetables and snacks. They are at Westinghouse in Pineville, I just drive 5 more minutes after I take exit 65B. read more

Hatoya carries only products made in Japan or for Japanese consumers taste. I have lived in many cities in United States, New York, NJ, Wash D.C. And Florida for last 48 years and I'm happy to live in Charlotte because of Hatoya. Aside from Mitsuwa in Edgewater NJ for New York City / NJ market, Hatoya is the best Japanese grocery store in East Coast. Great products. Small store, but surprisingly large selection. This store I prefer to any other current Asian Market in the Charlotte area because it is clean & I don't need to worry that I will bring home something that may be infested with moths or other pests. Peace of mind & wonderful imported products are worth every penny. It's Japanese so I'm not able to get some Korean products I use, but I get everything on my list here & only what is missing from another Asian market that is sadly a lot less well-kept. read more

I started wanting to try several Japanese recipes, but had trouble finding the correct ingredients. Hatoya Mart was a wonderful discovery!! I found what I was looking for and so much more! Some say the prices are higher, but I'll pay it for authentic items that give recipes the right flavour. I also found kitchen ware, utensils, candies, condiments, and so many other things I'd seen on TV or in anime that I wanted to try. I'm not Asian, but I am an excellent cook and do quite a lot if Asian cooking. I also just relocated to nearby Greenville from Los Angeles where I lived in a heavily Japanese neighborhood with access to several amazingly stocked Japanese grocery stores. I love making sushi and was quited bummed out by the non-existence of sushi fish in Greenville. I found myself in Charlotte today and decided to do a search to see what I could find. I found this place but it was just minutes to closing time. I knew that I would be about 5 or 10 minutes too late so I called and the manager Gene answered the phone. I explained that I was in town from Greenville and would really love to pick up some fish. He was very welcoming and said he would wait for me. When I got there they had a great selection of sushi fish. Granted it was frozen and I am used to fresh access to almost everything in Los Angeles. But the fish is actually very good and the flash freezing made it possible for me to buy enough for several dinners and just stick it in my freezer. Gene even set me up with an ice block to keep my stuff frozen on the way home. I will most definitely be back when I have more time to poke around. But for now I grabbed all the ingredients I need for 4 good sushi meals. Great little store, really nice people , and quite reasonable prices. I know I will be back. I guess I'm just going to have to make a regular run from Greenville every month or so to stock up. read more

I adore this little gem. I love picking a green tea ice cream from their cooler on the way out. They have a great assortment of frozen foods, sweets, rice seasonings, eating ware, beauty products, decorations, and they also had some manga, CDs, and DVDs. read more

Check the dates on anything you go to buy here, because despite having just moved into a larger location, they do not appear to have sorted through their products and discarded the expired items. The reason I did not buy the sheet masks I found there was that they were all over a year past their expiration date. With that carelessness, I really hesitate to buy food there. read more

It's the only place to get all of your Japanese items. It's my little slice of Japan. After living in Japan for 3 years there was a huge gap in my life when I left and could not get the little things I needed. Things like really good Japanese soy sauce in more than an 8 oz bottle at $8 each.Fast forward 20 years and I moved to Charlotte and found Hatoya. I love Hatoya! It's always worth the 20 extra minutes it takes me to get their instead of going to the other Asian grocery stores in the Charlotte area. The other reviews weren't lying, it is a quaint little store, but it has a great selection of Japanese food, kitchenware, beauty products, books and magazines, and movies to buy or rent. The Japanese staff is courteous and the store itself is clean and usually quiet. A lot of Asian markets in the area have gone out of business, and I'd be devastated to see that happen to this one. So go check it out! P.S. If you call them, they will answer in Japanese, so don't let it catch you off guard like I did. lol read more

this place is fantastic! for a long time, i had been driving all the way to the large asian market on independence. and i prolly will still stop there every once in a while, but this is much closer to home base for me. they have just about everything you need to make a japanese meal and then some in asian cuisine. they have fresh produce and lots of different selections of frozen meat/fish/seafood too. like other reviewers mentioned, there are also tons of books and videos. if you're like me, you will love all the snacks and candies there. the store clerks that work there are way nice and make me feel like i'm in japan again. read more

Limited selection- not a full blown grocery store. Prices are higher here for items you would find at say G Mart. Some of the frozen food look like theyve been hard for a long time. However, I think its great they offer at least something for us Asians who are trying to get our homeland fix. I will come back again to get treat here and there. read more

I am Japanese and have been to Super G, inter national market etc.... and I finally found this place! Yes, it is small and a little bit pricy side. But most product are same price as other stores. Japanese products are not as cheap as other Asian countries so understandable. I love this store over others because so clean ( not smelly) and organized. Customer service is great! I have missed "An pan"-sweet red bean in the bread and " curry pan " - curry in the fried bread so much. They are expensive but remind me of Japan so I always buy them :) read more

This place is legit. If you call their phone, they say "Hatoya desu." Pretty much everything you could want if you're a Japanese transplant or Japanophile. In addition to food items essential to Japanese cooking, like dashi, shoyu, mirin, they have hard to find products like chrysanthemum, enokitake, and dried squid! There are also Japanese videos, snacks, sake/beer selection, Japanese plates/bowls, and cooking utensils like mandolins. The owner didn't speak a ton of English, so speak slowly and maybe look up the Japanese word for things you need. If you want to make sure something doesn't have MSG in it, say this: "MSG arimasenka?" The only thing I found they didn't have was premade salmon rice ball snacks. They do have a little tool to help you make them, though. read more

The only all Japanese grocery store in Mecklenburg Co, Hatoya has vastly improved over the last 3 years since management changed. Super friendly staff. Ever-expanding array of products. Clean, with no funky fishy smell! Frequent shopper points program (not fantastic, but better than nothing if you're a regular). They also carry cool candies and snacks that appeal to the broader public. The only negative comment I could make is that items on sale are often past their expiration date, so check before buying. read more
