I walk by Optimo fairly regularly and I had looked up their website and loved what I saw. With a rare day off from work with no other commitments I was excited to see the store and hear the hat lore. And buy a hat for myself and a gift for my dad. Unfortunately the person at Optimo was not as excited about me. As soon as I walked in the vibe was off she barely looked up from whatever it was she was doing to give me a lukewarm welcome and immediately go back to ignoring me. I asked about the store and the hats getting information was like pulling teeth. Then another customer walked in who she immediately began helping to ignore me. That was my cue to leave and idk if I will ever have a cue to come back. Which is fine because there are other custom hat makers contrary to what Optimo would have you believe. The hats were nice but at that price point I am expecting top notch service and Optimo is in the basement.

A few months ago I noticed a sharp looking guy with the perfect fedora on in a Naperville Starbucks. Being a career retailer who has always fantasized about being able to pull off such a look, but never finding the right combination, I commented to him how sharp it looked. Ironically that man turned out to be Graham Thompson, one of the world's best hat makers and the founder of Optimo. Getting a quick tour today from his apprentice was even more impressive, seeing the molds and hearing their process to match hat, fabric, and brim style to head shape and desired look. It didn't surprise me after a few minutes of discussion, the first hat he put on my head was perfection. It's another one of those retail experiences you never forget, and one that could never be duplicated online.

Its like every store i went into the employees were just plain unprofessional, they ignored me and I literally had to go after them for help. Everyone looked as if they didnt want to be there and like it was a bother asking them for help. The majority of the workers there are young but even though that may be the reason why the service was so bad it's still not an excuse to be a horrible employee. Anyways this review is specifically for Lids. Lids was the last store I went to before leaving the mall and let me tell you my experience was just horrible. I've been to a lot of Lids in Chicago & in Illinois in general & I've never been treated so rudely by a lids employee like this before. I hate to bring race into it but I noticed the whole time I was there I was ignored but as soon as another African-American came in he immediately helped the guy out but ignored me the whole time I was there and I was there for 15 mins, the Lids employee was African-American btw but i do remember that he was skinny about 5'7-5'8 with a black Sox hat with the nike logo on the left side, unfortunately I didn't get his name. I literally waited for the guy to acknowledge me & just NOPE! It's as if I didnt even exist & mind you it was just me and another guy, a white guy btw, no "may I help you guys?", NOTHING! As soon as he was done with the African-American customer he still ignored me when I was looking straight at this guy, we even made eye contact a few times & still nothing, nada, niente!!! Just walked past me with out even asking me if I needed help so I sarcastically asked him if he works there and replys to by telling me to wait, that he would help me momentarily but it was so obvious he was just stalling to help me, he literally started arranging the hats smh, seriously!!! Wow!!!. I don't know what this guys problem was but I sensed a bit of racial/implicit bias smh. I'm a muslim latino btw so I know what it's like to be discriminated against, and I dont mean to come off as a male karen for complaing about what happend to me today at this Lids since I was born & raised in the city, I have thick skin but I'm just sick and tired of experiencing this all the time. It seems everywhere I go knowadays this happens to me smh. I really want to give the young man the benefit of the doubt & want to believe maybe he was having a bad day or just plain ignorant because he's young but I'm smart enough to know when someone is being plain rude or bias. I hope this young man & people like him change for the best because being bias and just plain rude is not the legacy you want to leave behind when we leave this earth. Peace & blessing to everyone!

What stood out is that this place sold Minnesota Twins hats. They didn't have a variety of them like most stores but this was the only store that sold the newer updated hats with the Twins updated logo which I regret not buying. Staff was really nice, helpful and courteous. Wouldn't mind coming back.

If you are a fan of ball caps, this place is about as clutch as they come. They have just about everything you could possibly imagine in sports for New Era fitted, and they also do several exclusives that you can only get from them (see the pictured KC hat). You can even get New Era caps from some pretty obscure sports too. Need a 59FIFTY from the world championships of ping pong you say? This place is your best bet to find it. They also do custom embroidery and stitching if you are wanting to personalize your cap even further. It's not a cheap option, and fitted wool caps are not cheap in general, but if you are feeling froggy and suddenly decide that it's appropriate to have "I'm Rick James, bitch" stitched on the side of your caps in large Old English font, they can hook you up. If you are a frequent hat buyer, I suggest you fork over the 5 bucks to join Lids club. You get 20% off all hat purchases, and it's tiered. So like most customer loyalty programs, the more you use it, the more you get hooked up. This also gets you VIP access to special hats before the general public. And you might think. "who cares?" Wait until a team you follow actually wins a championship and it comes through in a big way. You pretty much get hooked up like the players themselves. 90% of the people you come across will wonder where the hell you got the hat from. My only major gripe about Lids is the shipping turnaround time. Maybe it's just because I am so spoiled with Amazon prime, but it takes a solid 3 days before my hat even ships. And no, Lids club membership has no bearing on shipping. I think loyal customers should also be rewarded with this as a perk. Other than that, this is hands down the best place you can find for caps. I have never seen it equaled. Their selection is unreal and I have never had a hat I wanted be out of stock in my size.

Ever since I quit my job at Adidas Originals, I've been saving up money and limiting purchases making this store's development a serious spending problem. The GF promised me I could go wild at the end of the year for Xmas should I restrain myself. I did, but I guess it wasn't necessary. If I had walked in, I wouldn't ever have cared to spend money. I walked into the store, and was met with a pretty icy reception. I made a circle and picked up a few sneakers. I even held one for about 5 minutes hoping to get a size, and to no avail; no eye contact, no greeting, no chance. Someone was wiping down a counter, and someone else was fixing someone else's hair. Maybe I just didn't look like someone worth helping? Maybe it was culturalism or something. It was cold and not only did nobody help me, but I genuinely felt like they thought I shouldn't even be there. Much of my anger is just pure disappointment in how I was treated. I'm not looking for hand-held service, but some acknowledgment would be nice. I will say that on this side of town, they have the best selection of Nikes I've seen in one place. Could've used more Adidas' and Reeboks', but that's preference. There's really only so many Air Force Ones that I give a shit about.
