My first visit I had Ian. Amazing experience. He has a very confident work flow and gave me one of the best cuts I've ever had. A couple weeks later I needed a clean up. He wasn't available my second time and I went with Shin. Bad choice. His demeanour and abilities were lacking from the first moment he started cutting. I have thicker curly hair and he seemed lost as to what to do. It wasn't even a cut, just a clean up and he ruined what Ian had done right away with clippers. Avoid him at all costs. Not happy. I have been searching for a new regular hair salon and was really looking forward to trying this barber, I have read nothing but good things, however I tried calling several times and left voice mails as suggested by the message and still have yet to hear back from anyone of the locations. It's an unfortunate trend in Toronto where some of these places seem to believe that a paying customer is lucky to receive their service. I honestly never write reviews, this however really bothered me. Hopefully this trend soon comes to an end as most of these places should come to realize that the service is what keeps people coming back for years. My impression is that this shop is more style than substance. Interesting product offering (hot towel, beard trim, beer?!, and what looks like a coffee shop in the back), bold decor, but very lackluster cuts. The scheduling is very tight - 20 minutes each for a men's cut (they say it's 20-30 minutes but each stylist is scheduled for 3 cuts an hour, all day). In all the setup felt like a barber factory. In all my years of getting my hair cut this is probably the shortest time allotted for a haircut at the $40 price range. As a result the quality of the cut is very supercuts-ish. Clipper work was quite sloppy for fades and scissor work is not very good either. Overall a very poor experience. I worked in a barbershop through high school and college and I can tell good technique from bad. If I had a hairstyle that can be cut in 20 minutes this place might be okay, but way overpriced. My cut usually takes closer to 35 minutes, so I won't be returning here. read more

I went to their Danforth location with an appointment. I was there on time but had to wait nearly 20 minutes before I could be seen. The cut seemed fine (they need better lighting!!) but on inspection at home, I saw a lot of unevenness and one of my sideburns was visibly longer than the other! The barber did a pretty shoddy job on my neck trim as well and didn't clean up properly after the cut. The price for everything mentioned above = $26 My 2 star review = slightly generous. Lesson learnt = there are shops in Chinatown that will do a much better job for under $10 read more

I get my hair cut by Ian, he takes his time, he does a great job and he is hilarious .. as an added bonus. I noticed the guys around, they ALL seem to be doing a great job. You can make an appointment by text or call, I text .. they always get back to me in minutes. Great place!!! read more

Also...no big deal but the beer store is across the street so after you get groomed you can go pick up some beers to celebrate being so good looking. Go on. You deserve it, you look great. I've had my hair cut here a few times and they do pretty good work. Their website encourages you to text them for an appointment which I have done in the past several times. I did so again this weekend and when I didn't hear back, called them to ask if there was any availability. The person I spoke to just laughed and said "Not today, man". I then said how about Tuesday, and the person said, "yeah, why don't you call us then." Kind of mediocre customer service, but that's Leslieville. You decide if $26.00 (rounded up to $30.00 with tip) is worth your while. read more

My new barber in Toronto. Good cut. Priced on par with other shops. And one woman here gives an amazing shave. Now the best part is the Polish diner cum coffee shop next door owned by the same person. Her mother is the cook. Very inexpensive but great quality breakfasts and coffees. It was my first visit tonight. I called ahead to see if they had any openings, and lucky for me, they did. A hop-skip-jump to the Barber, and my already-too-long-hair was ready for its date with Hastings' floor. The Barber, dressed in button-up plaid, was a gentleman. Hastings offers excellent decor (not something I normally look for in a Barber shop, but in this case I dig it) complete with a massive antique wooden vanity (new mirrors) from 1904. The magazines were classic Playboys, a few old Vice magazines, and an oddly out of place MMA men's magazine. (It's amazing how much material you can plow through while waiting for a 1/2hr for a haircut). Despite the wait, the service was excellent, my hair looks very good, and the price was hardly expensive ($26+tip). It may end up replacing my normal barber shop (Anne's @ Queen & Pape) as Anne's offers some difficult hours that don't quite mesh with my schedule. Once my hair is in serious disarray, I'll most likely return to Hastings for a trim. Perhaps complete with straight-razor shave. read more

Got another disappointing hack job from this chain today. Showed them a photo of me with the exact haircut I wanted and they still botched it... cut off way more than I asked for and screwed up the fade too. This happened last time (at the Danforth location) but I thought maybe I was just unlucky that time. Now instead of having the hair I wanted I get to spend the summer waiting for it to grow back again. read more

While the atmosphere of the shop is interesting and the barbers themselves are friendly, the quality of the cuts are below average especially when compared to independent barbers. I've gone to this location 4 times and their other location in Cabbagetown twice and I've found the same issue in both places. The barbers keep things quick and simple and struggle to deliver on an easy reference image I've given them. My most recent trip saw my hair cut in under 20 minutes. It felt and looks rushed, especially for a $30 cut. I didn't feel like there was really any effort put in to what was being done. Neither location accepts debit or credit, but this is simply a minor inconvenience given they have ATMs at both shops. Overall, I think I'll be looking for a new barber in Toronto. read more

Have been coming here a few years so that tells you how satisfied I am. The first I went I saw "Gary" and he not only a very good barber he has a great personality. On the rare occasion I go somewhere else , my wife says "Gary didn't cut your hair!" They only accept cash and I always make an appointment online , text or call! read more

Got a haircut and a beard trim from Karoline at the Danforth location. It's hands down one of the best cuts I've ever had. She took her time and it shows. I will definitely be back. They've got a very friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Making appointments via text messages sure is more convenient than phone calls. Great experience coming from a salon where I was paying nearly double for a haircut. Cool space, very hipster with the decor and music. All the guys know how to do a great fade; can recommend Marlo as a great guy who remembers his clients and what they like and gives a killer haircut. $30 including tip for a stylish haircut is nothing to skip over, especially given the location. Only downside from what I'm used to is there are no sinks to wash your hair afterwards so hair on your clothes is inevitable. read more

Decent enough haircut, atmosphere is a bit tacky due to all of the dead-heads mounted on the walls. Price is $26, ($30 with tip) for a men's haircut that takes 10 minutes. Seems to me that $30 is a bit much for a trim at a Barber Shop. read more

After an extensive search for a good local barbershop, I've found the one. The decor is cozy and warm, the guys are welcoming, and-most importantly for me-it doesn't give off that pretentious air that some of the new retro-inspired "male grooming" barbershops have about them. I decided to check this place out seeing as how it was in my neighbourhood and looked kinda 'cool' from the outside. I am extremely happy with the results and I do think that the haircut I received here is one of the best I've ever had. This is about one of the newer locations of Hastings Barber Shop that is on Gerrard just west of Parliament. I have been walking past this place for quite a while on my way home from work and read some good reviews. I booked an appt by txt (simple) and went it to this very cool and proper barber shop. I usually get a quick (and bad) cut at one of the chop shops downtown which normally takes between 5 and 10 minutes and never looks that good. But at the Hastings, the guys are cool and chatty so it was a comfortable environment. They take their time to do a good job, because it's an art for them, not a battle to make as much money as possible in as short a time as possible. Interesting thing about my barber, he would turn the chair around and stand mostly in one place, so that I wasn't looking in the mirror until the job was done. I didn't get to watch the process, just the reveal, which may have been an intentional part of the experience. I let my barber use his best judgment with my cut, because this is his expertise. I was really thrilled with the outcome. It was exactly what I was hoping for, and the price is very reasonable. So, if you are a boy, man, dude, gentleman or just a guy, do yourself a favour and visit one of these shops for a proper mens haircutting experience. read more
