Made an online appointment one hour before my haircut with whoever was available. Ended up with Jose who did an awesome job. This was my third haircut in the city of Toronto by three different barbers and this will be the place I return to. With tax, men's haircut was about $38, not including tip. Located in the Kensington market with many other neighboring barber shops. Please note that this store is not wheelchair accessible due to the entry set of stairs. There were probably 7 barbers working in the store and everyone seem to have appointments lined up. I asked for a zero fade on the side and trim on the top. I got exactly what I wanted from Jose who knew how to use clippers very efficiently. Personally I've never been much of a talker during haircuts so Jose's mellow and not overly talkative demeanor worked well for me. Will be back for sure. read more

Every once in a while I find a place that I just don't want to tell anyone else about. It's selfish but you can't go giving it all away for free now can you? Crows Nest Barbershop is that kind place. Tucked away in the basement of a clothing shop on Kensington Ave is one of the best barbershops I have ever seen. It's small and feels like a club house, the way barbershops were meant to be. The shop tends to cater to a more classic style of haircut. Don't be surprised if you see a good solid pompadour stroll out before you sit down. Crows Nest sells pomades and other hair styling products as well. There are only two chairs and one barber so you will probably have to plan ahead and make an appointment. If you're in a rush, this is not the place to go. I had the chance to sit down, relax a bit and read old (not classic, I mean printed in the 50s "old") hot rod magazines while the young man in the chair ahead of me got a lesson on how to pomp his hair. It seems that my only Yelp reviews thus far are about barbershops... So to continue with this trend, a quick review on Crows Nest. My last barber fled the country to go chase his boyfriend around in Switzerland, so I was on a quest for a new, quality barber to be loyal to. I was desperately in need of a cut, so before I left my house in Riverdale, I hopped on the net and looked for barbershops in the city and Crows Nest was one of the first to pop up. I entered their website to check their availability for cuts - there was none, but the online booking tool said that they always take walk-ins. And walk in I did. I showed up just after 2pm and one of the barbers greeted me, telling me the next available sitting was at 5pm. Just as I declined the 5pm cut (as I was pressed for time), a gentleman-barber named Joel chimed in saying he was just finishing up with a guest and that he could take me next. Score. Joel is technically an apprentice at this shop, but he cut my hair like he'd been doing it for years. I am very happy with the results. He was very knowledgeable about cuts and was a good guy with good conversation skills. I will definitely call ahead next time to book an appointment with him. Barber loyalty be found! I just got back from getting a hair cut this afternoon, and I am not to pleased with the cut I received for the price. At $35 + tip and gratuity I except the barber to be able to provide a cut similar to what I describe. I provided a photo even for an example and still did not receive the cut I wanted. I asked the barber to leave my hair long on top, roughly 3-4 inches left in length so I can stick it back and give me a 2-4 taper on the sides and back. The taper is amazing as any barber should be able to do this, but my barber cut off all the length on top, leaving me only 1-2 inches to work with. I went from having 8 inches of hair on top to less than 3. Needless to say I can no longer slick my hair back, and I am really not happy about it. read more

I went to the Kensington Market location for a 12:30 appointment, the barber didn't show up, he called me and asked if I was still coming while I was sitting in the salon and he said he was on his way, 12:45 still no show so I left and 12:48 I got an email that my appointment was cancelled. I called him back and he said he could not fit me in, after sitting in the barber shop for 15 minutes. Total disappointment, I will never return. Had to take out a star versus a year ago.... Still go there and reco them....however! they are about to do the same mistakes many other successful start ups do. They have a good start. They ride the social media wave. They raise prices (from $20 to $25) They become too used to success. Move constantly barbers around on availability making it difficult for base customers to follow. They open a 2nd store likely impacting the first just a little. They raise prices a second time within a year to $28.50 Again I really still like the place and go therebut I would not be surprised if they have been experiencing customer feedback. Guys ...... Found this place online when I was looking for a place that does hot towel shaves. They do an AMAZING straight razor shave and have since come back to get a haircut from them as well. It was wicked. Besides the fact that they are awesome at what they do, the barber shop is amazing and pretty much a museum of old religious stuff and barbering equipment. SooOOoo, if you have am amazing moustache, yes they have an authentic moustache curler to make your mo look dapper (it looks similar to a normal curling iron but is wicked small). The staff are all lovely, you'll leave looking bonermeltingly hot and wont pay an arm and a leg for it, lucky you. read more

I had been growing my beard for about 3 months and it was starting to get out of control, but I was scared to cut or trim my beard in case something went wrong. After talking with a couple friends about crows nest I decided to give them a chance. The staff their were really friendly and as a walk in it didn't take me that much time to get into a seat. The barber talked to me and asked me what I wanted to do and then went to work. Within 10 minutes I was walking out of Crow's Nest feeling great with a well trimmed beard. Probably not the best place to go if you have something specific in mind. I've only had my hair cut here once and it was with Dustin. He was a nice enough guy, but didn't really give me the haircut I've come to expect from my regular barber (in a city I moved away from). They seem to cut everyone's hair the same way, so he must have just done what he was used to doing and gave me the same cut without considering how specific I was about what I wanted. They'll also slick your hair back with gel or moulding product when they've finished cutting, which can be an issue if you want to see how long they've left your hair. Also, after getting home and taking a closer look, I noticed that my fade was a bit boxy rather than smooth. If you're concerned about specific style and a strong fade, then you'd be better off going elsewhere. This place is good if you want the cut that they seem to normally offer (plenty of pics on their Instagram page) for a cheap price (mine was $25 after tax). read more

Asked for a low fade, dude straight up razors so far up I wondered if he had listened to a word I said. Been looking for a barber that merits a (or multiple) return trips and I found that today in Crows Nest and Baby Rae. She gave me a fantastic haircut; couldn't be happier with it! The place has a warm feeling to it- probably cause all the barbers there seem to be really close and part of a sort of "barber brotherhood" if that makes sense. Very homely, comfortable vibe which I liked. Baby Rae was great- listened to what I wanted, did exactly that and was good to talk to. For $25 I cannot be happier! No jokes. I booked an appointment after reading an article online about Barber Shops being the last bastion of men only exclusivity. Previously I had been frequenting salons to get my hair done, paying upwards of $50 a cut. Switching to a barber was the best decision I ever made, and the Crowsnest staff will make your transition swift and easy. They do men's hair right, pure and simple. You don't have to be super cool to go, but you will feel cool, and you'll look great. Can't praise this place enough! I usually walk out spending between $40-50 as I buy my hair products from them as well. The two stars are for their customer service and misleading "rules". Had an appointment with Jessie, who I had a good experience with in the past. A couple days before they call me and tell me Jessie cancelled and they reassigned me to another barber. I think-no harm done. The day of the appointment I was running late due to an unexpected subway stoppage. Called them and told them I would be around 10 minutes late. The receptionist tells me if I am there within 10 minutes after the appointment they will serve me for sure. Should have told me there is very little chance of me being served rather than misleading me. i get out of the subway and flag a cab to get there ASAP. Make it at 10-11 minutes past the appointment time. Suddenly, the receptionist says he can't serve me. Turns out I was assigned to an inexperienced apprentice, and he was not comfortable cutting my hair in the remaining time and make the next customer wait. Funny double standards, as it seems only the staff's time is valuable, not the customers! Not only did I waste my time and money to come there due to a misleading promise by the receptionist, I was talked to in a rude way by an unapologetic receptionist. I also recalled having to wait 8-10 minutes for my barber the last two times I got my hair cut here (when I was early to my appointments). Those two times- I was just supposed to understand that the barbers are running late. Yet no empathy from the receptionist, the one time I was running late! Will not be going back! It is really too bad to be honest, because their barbers are good at what they do. It used to be a place I would recommend to friends. A fine establishment all around from service to atmosphere. The decor is inspired by the Greaser culture with lots of crucifix and taxidermy for some reason. The real cool thing is the vibrant atmosphere and camaraderie you become a part of when you sit on the barber's chair. There's lot of fun uncensored guy banter going around not any of the pathetic small talk you get at the salon. To set exceptions straight, this is a manly place where people that cut your hair are barbers not stylists. They look at little bit more like Tom Hardy in Bronson and little less like Tom Hardy in Marie Antoinette. The place smells like petroleum and barbicide not lavender or tea tree oil. The work was top notch, as good as it gets really. I am definitely going back for seconds soon even though I'll be missing the sensual scalp massages at the mall salons. read more

Just had my haircut today with Jimmy. Jimmy is very friendly and he did a great job with my haircut. I went for the side part and it came out very close to what i was expecting. My only complaint is that they face you away from the mirror as they cut. This is unorthodox and it makes it difficult to have a good conversation because you can't see your barber. The place is noisy with all the clippers and conversations going on but overall a very cool vibe. Will revisit. read more

After hearing good things about Crows Nest on Yelp and elsewhere I decided to check them out. Because of their success, you can't just stroll in for a cut. You may get lucky with a cancellation, but they are typically booked 4-5 days in advance, so use their online reservation system to secure an appointment. It's hard to describe the atmosphere (old-school barber shop meets Jesus meets Harley Davidson?), but it's clear that the mood and decor are utterly authentic to the people who work there. Professional, chill, and friendly, Chris took the time to listen to what I wanted and did an excellent job on the cut. No powder puff! But very friendly...this is NOT supercuts (thankfully). My barber was Jayhu. He turned me away from the mirror and started his job. Was chatting up with colleague. I got an awesome cut from Steven the first time I was here and I came here the second time to confirm that it wasn't just luck... And it wasn't. I was a bit hesitant coming here at first because I don't particularly fit into the "hipster" category, so I also thought my hair was better suited for a salon-style cut rather than a barber-style cut - but I was completely wrong. My experience got me thinking that perhaps every guy can rock a barber-style haircut - but it could also be what's trendy at the moment. A barbershop is a bit different from a salon so if you're deciding if this is the place for you, you should review some of the differences to make sure this is what you want. They're likely not going to cut your hair with just a pair of scissors - and a clipper will likely be used. When I first walked into this place, I was a bit surprised as to how much it fit my expectations of a barbershop in Kensington. However, the one thing I expected was a snooty attitude, which no one gives off here. All the guys are really chill and seem to enjoy actually working there. My barber Steven was a really genuine, honest, and humble guy who is really good at what he does. He gave me the best haircut I've ever received and even though I don't have any tattoos, piercings, or facial hair, it still looked right on me. The hype for this place is well-deserved. It may be on the pricey-end for a barbershop, but I'm used to paying salon prices so for me it's actually a steal. Other reviewers have mentioned that they're cash only, but I think they actually accept cards now. They do take walk-ins up until they're filled up - so go early in the morning if you want a spot, but I highly recommend just booking in advance. They have a great online system that's easy to use and notifies you through email and text when your appointment is coming up. It was my first taper/fade and he did an amazing job. Great conversations, friendly and relaxed environment. I went for a cut and a beard trim today, and it was great! The barber (Mac) was friendly, and the environment was very aesthetically pleasing. They had great classic music playing, that added to the classic Barber Shop feel. The whole thing took about one hour to complete and with awesome results. Saw great reviews so thought I would try this place out. I came in at 1 o'clock on Saturday and was told there was an opening at 3 pm. Apparently this was lucky as the next available appointment was next Saturday. So if you are looking for a quick haircut probably not for you, book or call in advance. I got my haircut with John who was considered an apprentice even though he's been a barber for 30 years. Super friendly, get me entertained throughout the whole process. Spent about 40 minutes cutting and styling my hair before finished with the blade to get things just right. For 16.95 after tax I felt this was a steal and was more than happy to leave some extra cash for my barber.
