Let me start off by saying Sam is the man. And so is his colleague (believe his name was Mark). The entire team is awesome. I swung by HK earlier today circa 3pm. It's a fairly quiet time on a quiet day, didn't expect the place to be busy at all. When I arrived, I was politely informed that it was booked for the entire day! And unfortunately, I did not book an appointment. Sam gave it some thought and still let me through - he just selflessly skipped his lunch. I will not take Sam's generosity for granted, so please book an appointment if you're coming to HK. HK is busy even during the quiet hours, and rightfully so: I came into the place looking like a homeless guy, and I left HK looking like Mr. GQ! I got a phenomenal cut for a great price. 5 stars BEFORE new management, 1 star NOW. Came here a few time before it went under new management (Started in Dec 2016) and it was great. I came here last week and did not realized until I sat down, as they didn't change the sign at the front. They only have a print out beside each mirror to let customers know. New management didn't bother me as the actual haircut was fine, however the shock came when it was time to pay and they said $18 (Male cut only)! So you bother to post a notice about new management but not your 80% price increase (Was $10 before). And of course they don't have a new price list anywhere either. That's not the right way to do business, especially for all the existing loyal customers. Seems like the new managem9ent is doing this so the old customers wouldn't know, and they can get one (possibly last) income from us. If you want to charge a new price, change your sign and let existing customers know BEFORE they walk in, so they expect and know to ask about pricing. And $18 for cut only, there're definitely better places to go. Fool me once, shame on you, cause I'm not coming back so you won't get the chance to fool me twice. read more

Quick and painless! First time visit with my 7 yr old son who did not want a haircut. Easily booked an appointment. Sam was on time and gave him a great haircut in a short amount of time. You know that feeling you get when you walk out of a barber shop and you just feel great about your hair and you start looking for more reflective surfaces to check yourself out? Well I have not felt like that in while until I found H.K. Hair Designs. I called to book an appointment and luckily for me I got a spot. Upon arriving I went through a few pages on yelp looking for a place in Richmond Hill/ Markham area that could do fades and potentially do them well. First Impressions: Shop was clean, spacious and bright. One of the barbers at the front greeted me and asked if I was Josh. HE REMEMBERED! MARCO: Great barber and he really knows his craft. He asked me what I wanted and I pointed to a poster above my head as to what type of fade I wanted. This poster was awesome, I said #21 please! Marco did not rush at all, he took his time and he really paid attention to details. So much so that he had to get all of my baby hairs. He was very informative and gave great suggestions. Halfway through the cut 3 other people came in looking for a fade and given some of my bad experiences with barbers I thought he would rush through the rest of the cut. ON TO THE NEXT ONE, right? However, I was pleasantly surprised as he was so focus on my cut, he allowed the other barber to take the clients. Overall, Marco is a pretty stand up guy and I am extremely pleased with the fade. Thanks Marco! Opportunities: One area that I would suggest for this place is to spend more time on the hair wash. I feel like there was a lack of effort in this area even though you are being charged for it. I did not get a full wash, it was just a quick rinse and was not rinsed off after the cut. I am not sure if this is all it entitles for the extra $4 but felt that this could be better serviced. Overall Impressions: Clean, friendly, attention to details and amazing skills. UPDATE (DEC 2016): Price went from $10 to $18 (cut only). A really drastic increase with nothing to show for it. Throw in a wash and hot towel and i might come back otherwise, not worth it. A modest increase of $2-3 is perfectly fine as rent or utilties can go up but $8? cmon! I tried this place for the first time on Sunday and the overall experience was pretty good for $10. I went with Randy and he was quite skilled, detail oriented, and took his time compared to other $10 salons/barbers i've been to previously. What prevented me from giving this place 5 stars were: 1) 4-5 flies were buzzing around even though there were no visible signs of garbage, and 2) long waiting times. I would definitely be back. Been coming here for the past few months, always a great cut. Shoutout to randy for taking care of me today. Young people who are passionate about what they do. HOWEVER, new management has upped the prices from $10 to $18, a very drastic increase. All there is to show is new paint, chairs and mirrors. Unfortunately this is already hurting business. During the 25 mins I was there, three potential customers came in but left. Could've pulled in $30+. A more modest increase to $12 or $15 might have kept the customers. I understand how they might want to promote an upscale image, however the drastic move maybe too soon and harsh for their established customer base. I really hope this place doesn't go belly up, hate to see the potential talent and momentum they had go to waste. read more

First time coming to this place cause my original hair stylist was fully booked and I need a hair cut badly. Did a little research and saw some pics. Looks pretty dope, so went as a walk in and see if they can sneak a cut for me. There we're two guys waiting and one hair stylist, so I asked can I get a cut today. The stylist goes, sure just have a seat. Apparently the other two guys have an appointment with another stylist, so I got this other dude (Found out his name is Randy) Randy asked me how I wanted to be cut, I said I'm not sure, so he did his thing and bam after the cut, I like it. Went to see Randy again today for a 11:30 appointment for a fade and a haricut and I have to say he knows how to cut asian hair well. As an asian guy growing up in the GTA, i've had a hard time finding the "right" barber to get my hair right. Randy at this shop knows his craft, just tell him what you want and he'll make you look sharp. 5 stars for the low price of $14 for a fade and a haircut which is just unbeatable around the Markham/Richmond Hill area. I wish i had discovered this joint earlier instead of paying $30-40 on a haircut at other places. These guys are awesome. Will be back to see Randy again for my next cut. read more

I usually get a haircut at home, but I decided to visit here for a more professional cut before a vacation. I got a fade cut with Sam. Amazing work! Incredible attention to detail. I've been coming here for a while now and it's always been great, the barbers are passionate and they care about detail but the up from $10 to $18 is in my opinion is really unnecessary, and I've seen instances where potential costumers have left because of the new price. Personally I think that changing the price back to something near the original $10 would make Exclusive Image Studio the go to barber in Markham. read more
