The prices are great. Burger and Patty Melt are just barely Okay. The omelette is very good. The fries are good. The hash browns are good. The coffee is very good but the younger waitress refused to make decaf for me.... and generally had a bad attitude. But the other red head waitress more than made up for the attitude of the younger one with the ring in her nose. The decor is old school retro, with a counter that looks like it came from the 50s or 60s. The place has old nostalgic pictures of Hammond from a very long time ago, 100 years plus! Generally, overall the service was pretty good though. The primary complaint was the skimpy burgers and no decaf! They have a lot of weekend specials with great prices. read more

Honestly, not very good food taste very bland hate to leave bad reviews on local own companies/restaurants but the steak tasted absolutely horrible. Super fat asked for it to be well done and it was still chewy as hell. They don't have a large menu selection or drink selection the menu is two pages. If you can get past the uninviting entrance and smudged windows on the door, you will discover a great little restaurant that well deserves their four (4) star review. My waitress was lovely and very accommodating. I don't remember if she had tattoos or not and I couldn't care less. She was Puerto Rican from Humboldt Park in Chicago as I'm familiar with the area too. We hit it off well, I was quite happy with my waitress. Harvey's is a long established business that goes back to the days when Hohman Ave on Hammond's Southside was a booming place. I hope little independent businesses like Harvey's helps rekindle and revitalize Downtown Hammond. Ahh the food! It was great! Ample portions, real ham off the bone, coffee refills and the privilege of dining in a vintage restaurant. Working class, multi-ethnic patrons, walk in and feel right at home. Food and service was incredible! I ordered a hot coffee and hash browns to go along with a bacon burger and I can say it was incredible. The location of the restaurant may be offputting, since it appears to be in a bad neighborhood, and the location seems old and run down, but I can assure you the outside does not affect the food at all. A little teenage kid (I think he was the owners son) served me and he was very polite and had great manners. Constantly checking up on me to make sure everything was okay. Excellent little diner located on Hohman Ave. Cute retro interior, complete with full counter & stools and small booths for two. A few tables have seating for four, but it's a really intimate space that feels comfortable for solo diners. Everything is very clean, almost immaculate. To me, this is the most important aspect of a "greasy spoon" diner. My server was also super friendly and attentive. I ordered the ham and cheese club without mayo, and it was delivered quickly. Delicious. Fries are also good. Thick cut, not over or under cooked. I've encountered diners that are questionable at best, but Harvey's isn't one of them. Found this place on a recent Sunday as I was out and about and wanted a bite to eat. I parked my car in the lot in by the restaurant and made my way in. I walk in and was told to sit anywhere. Finding a place to sit, I felt like I was in an olf 50s diner complete with pictures on the walls from the yesteryear of the town. The waitress came by and handed me a menu and I decided on an omelette with English Muffins and coffee. Soon after I got my meal (as there was only one other in the restaurant along with me it did not take long). The meal was filling and tasted great. Coffee was good well. I don't get here often but I will gladly stop in again sometime as its a neat mom and pop kind of place to patronize. read more

I always feel bad having to give a mom&pop type place a bad review because I really want to see them do well, but this place didn't even come close to living up to the 4 star review. First, let's start with the waitress (the one with all the tattoos); I told her that I needed a couple of minutes before I would be ready to place my order, and she just stood there hovering over my table like she was telekinetically telling me to hurry up. After a while, I would learn why. So she could go back to sitting down to eat her own breakfast, then run outside to meet up with her boyfriend for a smoke. She even rudely commented beforehand, " maybe I'll get back to my breakfast eventually." It's like, hello, you're at work, not at the bar on your free time. Needless to say, she not once came back to my table to see if I needed anything prior to bringing the check. I don't know why I left her any tip at all because she sure as hell didn't deserve one. If you're the type of person that puts a lot of stock into the appearance and decor of a restaurant (which I'm usually not as long as the place is clean and has good food) this is not the place for you. It looks like this place hasn't been remodeled since it was first opened. Which I would guess was back in the 1960's or 70's. And if you're a big man like me(I'm 6'-00- 280lbs) you can forget about a booth here! I had to move to a table the damn booths were so small! I might have been willing to overlook all this b.s. if the food was good, but the food sucked too! The food was bland and tasteless. I ordered the chicken skillet on the waitresses recommendation and if this was their best item I would have hated to ate their worst! I originally planned on ordering the Texas omelette and the waitress tells me, " I wouldn't order that. This place doesn't make homemade chili, it comes from a can." WOW! Even the iced tea was watered down. Then I ask the incompetent waitress to bring me some lemon wedges for my tea and she brings back these paper thin slices of lemon and I'm like, what the hell am I going to do with these?! So that really sealed the deal for me with this place. Needless to say, I will NEVER be back. It's beyond my comprehension how this place has received 4 stars. I passed Cracker Barrel and Sophia's House of Pancakes on the way to this place and I really wished I had stopped at one of the 2 instead of Harvey's. read more

I just ready Alton Brow's book "Dining on Asphalt" and it inspired me to seek out little diners that I ride by every day, but never stop. Harvey's in the Downtown hammond area as been there for decades. You will notice their coolth blue awning. We went this this morning for breakfast. It was like walking into the past--counter/sits, and booths all vintage well maintained. The counter looked cool to sit at, but we opted for a booth. The waitress was friendly and attentive. They passed my number one test:java joe! The coffee was 3 cups great! We ordered breakfast-which was perfect. The ham amazing, the hash browns perfect, and the bacon crispy yummie. The price was great too. This is a must return for us. Please try this hidden gem! They serve breakfast all day and lunch. No dinner hours. Parking is fine-they have their own lot. I just wish their potato soup was ready when we were there this morning. Lunch offers sandwiches and a daily special. read more

Eating at Harvey's Restaurant is the closest thing to stepping into a time machine. The diner counter and the 2 person booths look original. The tables and 4 person booths are relatively new. The place is clean but worn. The worn look adds to its charm. Old pictures of the city of Hammond Indiana line the walls as a couple old hotel paintings. The service is quick, efficient, and friendly. Only one waitress on duty at the time of my visit. It reminded me of the old television show "Cheers ", as she knew everyone's name. I had the Denver omelet. It filled the plate and they didn't skimp on any ingredients. Omelet and a coffee under 7 bucks. Located a few blocks south of downtown Hammond.
