Harvey Nichols is a chain of department stores, founded in 1831 in London, home of their flagship branch, they now have 16 stores around the country, including this rather nice branch on New Cathedral Street, alongside many other high end stores such as Hugo Boss, it is easy to find from Manchester City centre, being fairly close to Exchange Square and Manchester's other high end department store - Selfridge and Co. The store is really nice, with a big tall cylinder on the end of the actual store, which I presume to be the restaurant, alongside the food hall they have a really nice, posh restaurant which can be found as soon as you get out the lift on the second floor. This store is really nice and high end, as you walk in from New Cathedral Street, they is a very small level and then a staircase onto the main shop floor, or a lift available which is quite hidden, located near one of the other exits and a small staircase. This branch of Harvey Nichols does something not many stores do, even the lifts are really cool, with shiny silver plates around the lift, to make it quite a cool place and not your typical old fashioned lift, most stores already have. I've been stuck in lifts before, and had so much trouble with them, being stuck in 6 lifts for around the hour, but this lift is actually nice and I was amazed, walking into it for the first time. On the second floor, there is a Bar and Brassere, which is located right after you come out of the lift, and is your typical high-end place with Afternoon Tea available, or you can just come in for drinks. Also on the second floor is a menswear section and a Foodmarket. All the food here seems very nice and high end, with a large amount of posh coffees, with Monin flavouring syrups, and other, less well known brands and other types of coffee and drinks. They even had a small piece of chocolate which was latte macchiato flavour, which looked pretty cool, although through looking at it and the packaging, it was hard to tell what it was. The staff here seemed quite friendly, and they did greet me to make sure I was okay, they seemed to know the brand very well and told me, they didn't stock the Pots & Co, a high-end, premium, moose-like dessert, and he told me, they'd probably only stock it in their flagship Knightsbridge branch, which is a similar situation to nearby Selfridges who also only stock it in their flagship London branch, which is a little frustrating. This store had a nice feel to it, with some really nice products and the store was a nice place to walk around and have a look, although the food market was slightly smaller than Selfridges at the Trafford Centre and Bullring, I still feel it is quite a nice, more modern place and overall a nicer department store, to most other department stores I have visited across the country, including nearby stores such as Marks and Spencer, House Of Fraser and Selfridges and due to this, I feel Harvey Nichols deserves a strong 4 stars as it is a nice place to shop, and with only few locations in the UK, and then around the world, it is well worth taking a look in, if you're a tourist in Manchester, or even a local. UPDATE: The store just feels to me to have declined a bit in terms of Food Hall selection and I feel originally I was amazed as the store was all new to me, but now the novelty seems to have faded and now I feel this store is barely average and instead warrants around a two star rating rather than two. read more

Getting into the part I picked out the following: Christopher Kane high volume dress Mary Katrantzou silk whisky dress Matthew Williamson silk party dress Richard Nicoll panelled wool dress Erdem embroidered alvita dress Vivienne Westwood cowl neck dress & Alexander McQueen dogtooth skirt and jacket Alas, when I looked at the price tags and noticed that they were all between £350-£3,000 I gasped with horror and politely handed them back to a member of staff. Harvey Nics seems to be something of a cardio unit. They have lots and lots of price tags with an amazing ability to jump start your heart beat. They do this with astronomical figures printed on paper, I really think there methods are fantastic and the NHS could save a lot of money by simply investing in their practices. Take a pair of socks? Any bids £10 steep side maybe? How about £20, just the one pair I remind you? no no they were £35 quid. Are they trying to kill people? Do these socks enable you to run as fast as Usain Bolt no. So safe, dated and naff that I actually feel sorry for rich people. Never will they feel the excitement of making a real find in some unassuming little shop. You thought you felt posh in Selfridges? You ain't seen nothin' yet, kid. Harvey Nicks is the epitome of class in Manchester, or at least masquerades as such, nestled in a beautiful building just at the end of what I like to call Designer Boulevard, alongside Selfridges itself and overlooking the Triangle. Unless it's mega busy a doorman will usually let you in, instantly making you feel bad if you're in your denimy-T-shirty scruff, as I often am on a stressful day of shopping. Last time I was in here I spied Rosie from Coronation Street getting her nails done. She looks as permanently surprised in real life as she does on the show itself. The store is home to a great many designers, some wearable, some garish, but I was particularly fond of an Alexander Wang dress my friend and I spotted which wound up being over £400. It's dangerous to browse in here if you're not affluent enough for the purchase of clothing. Stick to the beauty floors and you might *just* be okay. We were in here to seek out a special hair product for my friend's mum, and indeed we found it with the help of a very friendly and helpful assistant. In fact my friend, oblivious to her sister's phone instructions, actually gave the phone to the assistant and the job was done in a flash. 'I wish all transactions could be like that,' she mused. I hear the restaurant is gorgeous (I must try it sometime to treat myself), and there's a great food section with really unusual store cupboard standbys as well as imported treats. You could put together some great hampers in there. If you can't manage to foot the bill for food in the restaurant, Harvey Nicks is surrounded by the great eateries in the Triangle, so you'll never be far from a reasonably priced meal. Give it a try and don't be scared. They won't be snooty with you. Remember, they want to sell you stuff, and most of them are probably on commission anyway. I have reviewed the Harvey Nichols for Leeds, and the same theory stands...Harvey Nichols is a necessary evil. Well necessary is taking it a bit too far, it's Manchester after all, and there are lots of high end high brand designer shops to spend your budget for the month on and in, however, it's something of a statement to get a Harvey Nichols, so we feel pride in that we have one. That's all fine. There's the actual content of the products in Harvey Nicks, and they can range from the reasonable to the ridiculous. All down to choice and prerogative. It isn't the product content I take my issue with, but every time it's the staff! If you are not dressed up to your best then be prepared to be followed around each floor you choose to browse and then when you think that you're paranoid, the paranoia will dissipate as you end up having to tell them to physically give you boundaries. You will either bugger off never to return or you'll test drive this theory by coming back in your finest work attire, all suited and booted, and when you do and you get treated like royalty, you'll put the little squirts through their paces and leave without buying a thing. then go back in your holey jeans and scruffy tee and spend nigh on a grand! Take that Harvey Nicks, prejudgmental eejits. Ok so positives, layers and layers of shopping, lots to spend and indulge, saves time and energy scouring around the rest of town when like Toys R Us everythings under one roof. For a department store there is plenty of variety, and designer boys and designer girls with lots of pennies to spend will have fun. read more

I am a Harvey Nichols fan. Yet, I prefer the Manchester store over the flagship store in London. This store is more intimate and seems more approachable. It feels like a boutique versus a department store. The associates are genuinely helpful, friendly, and kind. The cosmetic department is easy to navigate. I love the Jo Malone shop. The Foodmarket, restaurant, and wine shop located on the top floor are smaller than London store but this store has everything you are searching for and the restaurant is lovely. As a Japanese, I think the Japanese food section in Harvey nichols looks a bit comedy ( and ridiculous price!! You can buy much cheaper in China town) though.. Quite a small store compared to the other Harvey Nichols stores I've visited. Wasn't impressed by the glorified bouncer on the door as he never bothered to get the door as I went in or out, I could've just won the lottery for all he knew! As you enter the store you walk past the garish display of ridiculously priced handbags, I 'd rather go to topshop at they therir bags look nice. The beauty and perfume section is well laid out and affordable, the staff don't hound you either which is nice. Not really a fan of the clothing as most of it is way too overpriced, you can find some cheaper items but most are sky high. I think the underwear section is a bit of a disappointment, far too tiny with a very small selection of items. I much prefer a trip to Selfridges myself. read more

After visiting selfridges in Manchester for a particular watch at the weekend for my fiance's birthday, i was absolutley mortified at how the staff actually treat some individuals. I felt so intimidated so much I have put a complaint in to selfridges I mean the staff are on mininum wage right? so why they think there above any one is beyond me, so after my experience here (they didnt have the watch in stock) I was a bit un easy about going into Harvey Nichols (Being so much more up market than selfridges obviously). Totally different story in Harvey Nichols the staff were so helpfull in the mens department think his name was Oliver Jones! i will be shopping at Harvey Nichols from now on and NOT selfridges. I was meeting my friends at the second floor restaurant at Harvey Nichols. due to me already having breakfast i just opted for Coffee. This was not that badly priced considering the upmarket surroundings, i would love to come back here for cocktails or to eat here one day as the cocktails and food looked spectacular!! Service was ok but when i arrived i said that me and my partner would like a table next to our friends and they looked a bit puzzled and a bit pretentious but i guess due to being a high end place like Harvey Nicks then this can be expected. I loved the chairs and the lighting, all very cool indeed. Apart from that a really cool trendy place to impress your friends or even a fancy date or somewhere to go on youre Birthday. read more

I feel a bit old fashioned admitting how much I enjoy a Sunday here- but I truly do. With their excellent Sunday Roast (and they offer a sharing board for two!) and Sunday Blues.... it is a very soothing wind down to the weekend and a way to refresh before beginning again -helps me face the week to come. nicely set out, bigger and has more of a wow factor then the leeds store. fab handbags and accessories section as you walk in! pass the complimentry doorman (nice touch) though i often wonder should i be tipping him for openning the door??? the beauty section is a must to wonder through, the shu uemura counter is a must for there cleansing oil! its not cheap but the feel good and the fact the product does what the assistant says, its worth the £45.00 ish price! i got myself the pink one, but the pump had broke after a few days of use! rung them up and explained i lived in york, not a problem, just return via post for replacement! so i posted item back recorded and they sent me a replacement via next day delivery (took 3 days) so 5 stars on after sales care! the food market upstairs is a nice little place for a wonder and some tasty treats, and they often have near dated items or easter chocolates etc reduced and the restaurant bar is a must for breakfast/brunch! the poached eggs dish is fab! eggs poached perfectly, so the whites are cooked through, but the yolk runs free! think it was called eggs benidict that i had? my son opted for the muffins. the coffee as always was perfect! as you would expect from a store such as this. nothing worse then a crappy cup of coffee, to start a shopping trip on! nothing on the ladies fashion for me at this store, lots that i like, but begrudge paying for. i've often been a little wary going into posh department stores, or posh high street fashion stores, incase i get the dreaded, eww look from assistants. its never happened at a harvy nic's! as i don't often dress to impress, when i go shopping! and my fav coat is what my friends refer to as my granny coat! it's brown, it keeps me warm and dry and is light to carry! perfect for shopping with! also for going out in, as i can leave it anywhere and no one will pick it up as it's that ugly! though can't seem to find it, recently? wondering if said friend has liberated me of this coat??? as she refuses to be seen with me when i'm wearing it! read more

Now, I have to confess that I have no knowledge of the clothes that Harevy Nichols sells. All I know is its far too expensive for the likes of me. No...the reason I come to Harvey Nichols is for their in-store beauty spa treatment place - Urban Retreat. Ask for Sam and she'll give you the best Brazilian you've ever had, and if your skin is needing a bit of rejunevation their Dermalogica facials are really something special. This is an upmarket place, with prices to match, but if you want a really quality beauty treatment, its the best in Manchester. read more

A most ridiculous store which is far too expensive and over priced. The clothes and handbags in here are disgusting, and the door men only open the door for you if you look the part! It is merely a shop which exists for status and people seem to shop here just because they can and not because it sells anything good. However, this said, guilt look to the floor, I do go in here for cosmetics such as Fake Bake and Bumble and Bumble, which I have trouble finding anywhere else. This said, I do shuffle through the store with my head down as I find it an intimidating experience. And when I buy these products I find the staff pay little attention to me. read more

If you have bags of money to spare and a taste for designer clothes then Harvey Nics is the place for you. It has clothes collections by high fashion designers, designer perfume and make up and a small food court. The clothes are beaustiful but not in my budget so I only really go to the perfume section as they sell affordable perfumes. It is very big and is excellent for window shopping or browsing and has a very stylish atmosphere. The food court is again very pricey but you can buy products there that you really can't buy anywhere else i.e. sushi kits or imported chilli sauce.If you can afford £1000 for a coat, go for it but if like the rest of us it's a primark job then stick to the food court and the perfumes. read more

i used to work here so i may have a slightly jaded view of the place. its not a huge store so there isnt loads of choice for fashion, very popular with the celebs but they usually hide out with the personal shopper. they have a small but really nice lunderwear section. the mens department again is small but the they do have quite a unique selection. the staff can be a little over the top they seem to think working in harvey nics gives them a different status and i have heard rumours of the doorman being a bit funny when letting people in if they dont look up to standard. read more

I love this place! you can get food from around the world, and although it is quite expensive, it is well worth it! The restaurants and bars are lovely and have very fast service. The security men no longer open doors for clientele as a recent survey commented that it made the place too unapproachable to clients who did not normally shop there. PLease don't be offended if they don't do this from now on! I work at Manchester Harvey Nichols and i can honestly say i love it. I understand there may be the odd person who can be pretentious but you get that from staff in topshop, i think because it's harvey nichols, people already go into the store with that thought in their head. I know this as i used to think like this before starting work here! Went to the Harvey Nichols in Manchester recently, which was great fun. People in Manchester talk about the presence of Havey Nicks as if mankind has just made some amazing scientific breakthrough. It is like civillsation has finally arrived. It is the same way smaller towns or cities talk about TK Maxx arriving - like they have just got an airport or something. The best thing about Harvery Nichols in Manchester is the building, which is fantastic and also the view from the little corner alcoves they have provided which offer an amazing look at some of Manchester's most varied and interesting skyline. The cafe is good fun also with the sort of tense atmosphere created from a place like this which has a reputation for being posh. Everyone looks like they are thinking - should I be here? Or - Yes - this is my right to be here! Or such like. The waiting staff have got that attitude you get in certain restaurants and shops where nobody really knows what the exact protocol is, or what the right manner or level of social class is acceptable. It's only a department store right? It is all very amusing and entertaining. Of course, many things are vastly overpriced. There was some really amazing art in the bar when I was in there. A great addition to a city which is bordering on the cosmopolitan these days. Nice one Harvey. read more

what an amazing store!, thank god for visa! the clothes are of excellent quality, what you'd expect from high end designers. i bought a stunning burberry trench coat with fur collar. at £995 it was a lot but i'd already tried it on at this point and the fit and feel was just perfect! i'm broke for the rest of the month but its worth it for all the compliments!! go to this store, and make an investment, the quality is worth the price considering how long it will last if you look after it. read more
