Shopping at Primark is like stepping back in time to the 1970s when a packet of crisps cost 10p, pyjamas cost £4 and jeans and knitwear cost about £7. The scary thing is, the prices are real. Everything in the store - and we're talking three floors of childrenswear, womenswear, menswear, shoes, lingerie, accessories and homewear - is cheap as chips. You could fill a whole basket with clothes and probably still have change from a £50 note. The company insist they manage to keep the prices way below inflation because they produce huge quantities and keep the overheads low. The documentary The Devil Wears Primark suggested otherwise with the underlining theme being exploitation and pitiful wages. Unfortunately, the latter doesn't seem to have had an effect on customers with the place being packed every weekend with bargain hunters looking for cheap and cheerful rip-offs of high street lines. The fact a lot of the clothes are badly made and stupidly sized doesn't seem to bother anyone as much as the long queues. I'm assuming this is because the moment people step through the door they leave two things behind; their common sense and their conscience.

Can there be a more depressing experience than an afternoon spent shopping in Primark? From the insanely dull decor, to the eyesight ruining strip lighting, to the staff who look like they'd really like to harm you if only they had something heavier to hand than a pair of £3 jeans- that incidentally guarantee to ruin anything they come into contact with. I know it's cheap and times are hard but nobody needs that many cardigans that desperately!

Whenever I see this place the imperial march from star wars starts playing in my head. Primark are subtly the biggest of the big clothes shops. Why subtly? Because if you ever think about it primark doesn't advertise its presence anywhere, you can't find info on it in newspapers, magazines, T.V nothing why is that? O wait now I remember, because its ton after ton of cheap clothing and furnishings all originates from shockingly poor conditions in some corner of the world. Primark tries to avoid touching on advertising it's presence or its general wares for this simple reason. But nobody should throw rocks in glass houses, it is cheap stuff, everyone goes there to pick up fancy dress stuff.

Massive store, now spread across three floors since TK Maxx moved out. If you do not like hanging around for very long time in shops like me then Saturday is not a good time to visit this store. The best time is Monday to Thursday before noon and you are able to get 100% assistance from the overworked staff. NB:Do not wear a formal black shirt with black pants/ trousers or you 'll be mistaken for a staff by customers!

A great place for low cost items. The only setback is the obligatory 15 minute wait in the checkout queue !

But then I guess a bit of 'man' is lost once you start going towards designer, which this shop definitely is. The January sales are still in effect here, with t-shirts discounted from £80 to £40. I wouldn't spend £80 on a t-shirt, but then I definitely wouldn't spend £40 either. I just don't quite understand the whole put sparkle on any item of clothing whether it's a t-shirt or some jeans policy to make clothes designer thing. It doesn't really work for me. That said, there's an amazing selection of jeans, t-shirts and jackets in Swagger Menswear and unfortunately it just isn't really to my taste. If being flashy is your thing, you could well find something here for you.

But this Swagger is a menswear shop that boasts some famous clients. It's just that... the clients aren't exactly my cup of tea clotheswise. Darren from Hollyoaks? Well I'm not judging him in real life but he is the worst dressed member of the cast. JLS? Don't even get me started on those primary colours. Footballers? Gah! They do offer Ringspun clothing which I'm generally a fan of, but the jeans are a bit too garish for my liking. I'm one way or the other with how men dress, it's either an earthy-tone clad Diesel model or Noel Fielding. I can't have any of this in between nonsense. The dreaded Ed Hardy rears its head here - that awkward brand whose logo looks great on the backs of the leather and denim jackets of skinny indie types and retro pin-up chicks but generally dreadful on the jeans of... well, chavs. Swagger is hit and miss. It might be worth a visit for some unusual and interesting items, and sometimes you can encounter special offers like two pairs of jeans for £70, but so far it hasn't proved to be my cup of tea in a more general sense.

Yes of course they're there to make a sale, but at no point did I feel any pressure to buy. Looking for a decent shirt for the wedding of friends of mine, after a quick measuring with tape and being presented with their 'tester shirts' (you don't try on the ones you'd buy, these are to find out which fitting suits you best) I was shown to their fitting rooms. After trying on a few and deciding on a style, it was over to the shelving and they brought down some options. I ended up with a lovely crisp shirt for just shy of £35. For the level of attention I received I was expecting it to cost three times that price. I left with a smile on my face and you know what? They've hooked me as a return customer now. I'll gladly spend my money where they treat customers with such regard.

The quality for a £30 shirt is miles ahead of what Thomas Pink and other competitors are offering at north of £100. Many of their jackets are half/fully lined with functioning button holes which are very hard to find for the price they are charging in this day and age. The customer service is very friendly too!
