They had only 3 workers for Christmas Eve and a huge line (everything was closed) and they were still so kind and we got everything we needed! The food was so good and really saved the day! I have never been so disappointed. After just reopening from remodeling, the place was unbelievable. I had to ask for napkins; otherwise, there were none available. Had to ask for chicken because the buffet was empty. The vegetables we tried were so heavily salted that we couldn't eat them. The pickled beets were rancid. I had to ask for the gizzards, and they doled out enough for me to take some, then the container was left empty (telling me I had all they were going to give me). The tables were dirty and not wiped. When pushing the door on the trash container, your fingers got stuck to it. The sad part is I have eaten at other Hartz's and they were very good. This place recently resumed the buffet. At $15.99 per person it is about the same price as several Chinese buffets that have better selections. Fried chicken was old and overcooked. Had to peal off the breading just to eat it. The roasted chicken was swimming in a pool of fat. The sides were bland and tasteless. The only good thing on the buffet were the yeast rolls. We had to ask for butter and knives. In addition you were only permitted two trips to the buffet. Although I cannot imagine why anyone would go back more than twice. There are two good Chinese buffets and at least five chicken restaurants within three miles of this place we will not return. read more

Went back after a few years to see if the place has changed for the better. NOPE. Got the five piece drive thru special. The chicken was absolutely FLAVORLESS! No seasoning at all. Anyway, I just moved into the neighbourhood, and since my knees buckle whenever I pass near a fried chicken joint (how stereotypical is that?), I just had to check this place out. I mean I've eaten at Hartz's before, but it's been a good 10 years. It's been long enough, in fact, that I'd forgotten it was a buffet. The place was deserted in the middle of a weekday. I guess folks don't come here for lunch often. So I skipped the buffet because...why would I want to eat that much fried chicken and warmed over sides? Got the 2-piece dinner with fries instead--my go-to at fried chicken joints. I guess they cook to order so it took about 5-10 minutes for the food to be ready. The verdict: The chicken was greasy and didn't have much flavor. The fries were ok and the hot roll was a bit hard and chewy. This chicken is my daughter's favorite. We live nearby so a quick weeknight dinner is what she loves when we allow her to grab something quick. Drive thru times are longer than usual. It's rare you won't have to wait. Best part about it though--chicken is always fresh as heck!! The bread rolls are DIVINE!! This fried chicken spot is in my neighborhood and I have visited this establishment many times for many years. The fried chicken is just as good as Popeyes, Church's and KFC. I used to visit, sometime just for there soft warm yeast rolls. This last visit was super disappointing. I bought a 14 piece chicken family dinner pack with included 2 sides and 8 rolls. They were not the soft warm yeast rolls that they have become popular for. They were tiny, hard, dry, extremely hard to vote and chew rock hard rolls. It was super disappointing. I tried to give the rolls to my Labs, because they have strong teeth and I thought they might enjoy chewing on it. They wouldn't even eat the rolls. I highly recommend take-out or drive-thru for your visit here. The buffet leaves a lot to be desired, but the fresh chicken for carry-out is great. Hartz was ok, would like to go in and try the buffet. A few weeks back I went because I was craving gizzards, and yes I LOVE gizzards. Shout out to Go Chicken Go in Kansas City, MO. The chicken was very greasy, the catfish had no flavor to it at all. I tried the bread putting and I tried the peach cobbler, I could not taste the difference. The baked chicken was good as was the most of the side orders. The gizzards we're good just had too much breading on it. Worst location! I only get an hour for lunch and I've been here four times at 11 and they wouldn't open the door. The manager inside or whoever will just ignore you and give you a dirty look. So I really haven't had their fried chicken proper, but I have had their fried gizzards. They. Are. Awesome. Seriously, it's the type of drunken, stoner, bar-food that you could sit there and just keep eating for the next hour. Think popcorn chicken, but elevated to the next level because gizzards actually have texture. They fried them fresh both times that I've gone so far, and the seasoning and batter is just right. Their dinner rolls are also soft and sweet - more stuff to pig out on. The livers are a miss for me - but I think that's more of the fault of livers in general, not the restaurant. The gizzards are always salty and chewy. They are getting better but just beware is you are ever in the neighborhood for a good gizzard.

The food was hot and delicious. My favorite is the chicken livers, gizzards, and bread pudding.

I am surprised at the good reviews for this place. Maybe they use the buffet to get rid of what they would have to throw out anyway. First the place is a little more than run down, it is not clean, but I am amazed at what the health department lets get by. As far as the fried chicken it's second rate, it tasted old and the one wing I had was broken and dark from the blood that had penetrated into the meat. The buffet is not kept stocked and then they tend to dole out only dark meat and gizzards. The mashed potatoes taste like paste, The rest of the canned vegetables have no discernible seasonings. Unless you are into slopping the hogs you will get a better meal for less money at Popeyes Chicken. I will not go back. read more
