Gateway Center - Skywalk connecting Gateway Center to Newark Penn Station

Gateway Center

The Gateway is to me just as the name implies - a gateway between Downtown Newark and Newark Penn…read moreStation. Beyond traversing between the two is a large business building. Most of my visits here have actually been for that - business for one of my clients family attorney. Several floors up after getting clearance is a fancy suite where I'm sure high profile law meetings take place as it is extremely high end looking and assume the other floors look the same. In the main area is an extension of what Newark Penn Station is like, New York Penn as well with various shops to consider before you travel. From what I can tell it serves it's purpose. An upscale office building complete with security, an art gallery on the lower level but shops that offer passage to Downtown Newark and Newark Penn. There is a parking garage just outside of the building that I find handy in my visits here.

If you are traveling into Newark Penn Station, you can get to Mulberry Street (one block from Broad Street) through Gateway's skyway. On your way, you can get a coffee or a quick grab-and-go snack at one of the shops inside. There are two Dunkin' Donuts, two Subways, and a few non-big-chain eateries (Nagoyaka, City Beans, COTIDIANO, Metro Café, etc.). There are also a few convenience stores, a New York Sports Club, and the Gateway Project Spaces. You can also enter the Hilton Gateway from inside Gateway Center. Gateway is comprised of four corporate buildings (1, 2, 3, and 4 Gateway). Midday, office workers will flood the skyway getting lunch or heading outside during their break. On a Devils night, many fans use the Gateway to get to Prudential Center, which is on Mulberry Street. Again, the best thing about Gateway is its convenience. My only forewarning is - during off-peak times of the day - be alert. While there is security during the work week, security presence isn't as visible during the weekend. I had a bad experience where a homeless man grabbed my arm when I wouldn't give him money, and no one was around to help me. This isn't a common occurrence, but just be careful.

Target - Front of store

Target

This Target is out of my way but I went during the Christmas shopping season because it was the…read moreonly location near me that had a specific LEGO set I needed to get as a gift. I ordered the item in the Target app and then drove to the store once I received the notice that it was ready for pick up. I know this location is not exactly "new" but it is not exactly old either. Let's go with new-ish. This means that a lot of the shops around it are also relatively new (I'm purely going by how worn down the buildings and restaurants look). It was kind of cool to visit a new-ish business but if you're thinking this Target is going to be like the larger ones at Menlo Park you may be disappointed. This Target is more like a "medium" sized one. While it does offer a good variety, the aisles are a bit more cramped and everything just feels a bit more "squished together" than other Targets I have visited. The day I went it was chaotic, but it *was* Christmas shopping season so perhaps that goes without saying. All that said, the place was as organized as a Target during Christmas shopping season can be. The employees were all very nice, especially in helping me locate the bathrooms which were oddly all the way in the back to the right. Quite unusual. My order was ready for pick up as promised and I had no issues picking it up. High marks for service. I'm not going to go out of my way to go to this Target, but my experience was good but not amazing. Your mileage may vary.

Recently, I've had some bad experiences at this Target, thus the 2 star rating…read more On two occasions at curb-side pickup they've either mixed up my order or missed an item from my order. In each case it took nearly 30 minutes to resolve. In today's in person experience it took nearly 15 minutes to track down an employee to help open up a locked pharmacy shelf, even though the store was empty. That's the unusual thing here... this Target is fairly new and usually is not packed. It's a shame because they are the closest Target to me, and they also have a Starbucks inside. If I'm dependent on an item I might go to Clifton instead, and only come here to shop for groceries.
