She had not right to touch any of his things. My son mattered. His things matter. Our memories with him matter. How dare she throw his things away without notifying us. I was in the office today and they had the nerve to ask me if I wanted to place a $3 bouquet on his grave. No, I don't want your HEB flowers, ma'am. I want my mom's Christmas tree and the Kochina that my son and I purchased at Bryce Canyon. I want the coaster that has his beautiful photo on it. I want the lights that I placed back in his area so that it's not dark back there. I want you to show my son respect. He deserves it. Every single person who is placed out there deserves it. It is tacky and hateful of you to treat their things like they aren't important. Their lives and their things are important whether you think so or not! I would rather bring my don't ashes home with me than have them somewhere that could care less about him. His name was Martin, and he matters!

So super helpful to get the full on sales pitch while finalizing my 2 year olds final resting place. Thankfully my Dad dealt with everything and decided that, sure, he would play ball and bought the 3 plots. Everything was handled professionally for my daughter's service and plot. Fast forward to December 2020. My aforementioned Dad passed away. His death was very unexpected. We knew he wanted to be buried next to his granddaughter and immediately made arrangements for him to be transported from Houston to Austin. Everything related to the transfer and grave-side service was handled great. We took great care with designing my Dad's marker. My Mom placed the final order December 2020. We were told it would be placed on 3-5 months. It is now almost a year later and still no marker. My Mom initially reached out to her contact at Cook Walden (Kyle) multiple times via email with no response. She called and left multiple messages with no response. Luckily I live in Austin and was able to park myself at the funeral home until someone would speak to me. After multiple assurances that 'everything was being done' to get my Dad's marker placed, I left. I reached out via text message multiple times and was told that 'shipping delays were causing delivery issues, etc.'. Sure. This would be a valid excuse for a month, 3 months, 6 month delay, but it's been a YEAR. A whole YEAR. My last text message was unanswered.

A simple cremation, and we would handle any gathering for friends at our home after the pandemic was over (my father died from a fall, not COVID). When my mother passed at Baylor Scott & White in Lakeway, the doctor at the hospital gave us a list of local funeral homes, and we chose to deal directly with a crematorium, which was quite affordable (around $650) because it didn't include any other services. My father's assisted living or emergency services must have called WCF, but we weren't given the opportunity to make that choice ourselves...it cost quite a bit more than we were expecting, but I understand the price difference is because they offer more personalized services and a nicer facility if you were going to have a gathering or a viewing. I was very new to all of this, and had only experienced going directly to a crematorium; my father understood that when the time came, we would just do what we did with my grandmothers, my brother, and my mother. We're not very formal people, so a traditional funeral would have been out of place. The staff at WCF was very nice, and since we were in the middle of COVID, we couldn't meet with them in person, so everything was done over Webex or Zoom. I wish we'd had the opportunity to do that in person.

If you are the person responsible for the arrangements, an executor for example, you have a lot on your plate and hope that things go smoothly, there are a lot of details and typically this process is not something you are familiar with. My father pre arranged his wishes with Thomason's so I was spared choosing a funeral home - or maybe not. Choose wisely, Thomasons Funeral Home has cost me a lot of time, money, and anguish. 1) Getting the wrong medical doctor to sign off on death. Resulting in 10 day delay 2) Filing incorrect death certificate form - then denying they made a paperwork mistake - still ongoing delay 3) Giving me the run around when directing me that they could not make changes to the death certificate and that it was my place now to deal with the state for a corrected certificate which is completely their responsibility 4) Sending me an email saying that indeed they had the corrected death certificate and asked for my address to send it to. (NO they didn't have the certificates and "that email was a mistake" - let that set in a bit I kid you not. So, review funeral home? Look for details, local, choose wisely to avoid the ongoing heartache brought by incompetence. Read reviews.
