First of all, I want to start off my saying this is one of the few independently owned and family ran funeral homes in the area. Most of the big ones in Austin such as Weed-Corley-Fish and Cook-Walden have been bought up by big companies such as Service Corporation International (SCI) and therefore usually profit margin is the number one driving factor when running a business by a big conglomerate. Harrell Funeral Home is not that way. They treat you like family, responsive to your needs and requests, do everything in the most professional and dignified manner possible. Even when they arrived to pick up my mother who had passed away at home, they were gentle in lifting her, asked us how they wanted us to wrap her, and placed a beautiful cover over her when they took her to an unmarked Mercedes van to transport her to the funeral home.They help you think of things that you may not have considered when a loved one passes. What I like best about them is their cremation facility in is onsite in South Austin so if you want to stay with your loved one until the very end, you are allowed to do that. Many places will nickel and dime you for every little thing but that is not the case with Harrell. They offer free online obituaries, free video tributes to go with your obituary, free grieving resources, and assistance with typing up loose ends such as procuring death certificates and closing out digital identities and financial matters of your loved one. Paul and Jason were so kind during this delicate time and there was never a hard upsell at any time. They respected my mother's wishes and my wishes for what we needed from them. I can't say enough great things about Harrell Funeral Homes and for anyone who has to unfortunately make those hard decisions, I would highly recommend calling Harrell to support you during that time. read more

In 2022, my 78 year old Mom went to Harrell to purchase a policy covering her funeral services. In March 2025, I became aware of it, and I wanted some changes as Mom's Power of Attorney. This upstanding and respectful group of people at Harrell did EVERYTHING within their power to live up to both Mom's wishes as well as my own. You can definitely trust these folks. I wish I could give them 6 stars. Post Script: I understand why the folks are commenting negatively below. Their concerns were mine also. HOWEVER, Harrell has made some personnel changes now and I would encourage you to meet with them to find out for yourself. When our family's Veteran patriarch passed, we wanted services befitting his great life. Harrell's fulfilled that vision and more. First, Harrell's quickly arrived at the hospital the night of his passing, smoothly transitioning him from the room to the hearse, appropriately draping our patriarch in the U.S. flag. Harrell's was splendid handling the memorial service, guiding us through all the planning, preparing, and executing with class. Their professionalism permitted all involved to be focused on our patriarch and his memory. Specifically, Doug and Wade teamed well, bridging the extended time from the death to the memorial service with ease and thoroughness. Doug kept in continual contact with the family, making sure we had everything needed. The Harrell facilities are lovely, and the staff couldn't have been more helpful and compassionate. in November 2023 I did a preplanning funeral contract with harrells. the agent they sent only goes by her middle name (red flag) . She was nice but obviously did not know what she was doing. Everything was finalized, I started making payments, then I get a call that some of the signatures needed to be redone. Ok, (red flag) so I re-signed and thought I could put it away because planning your own funeral is NOT a happy thing to deal with. Well a few weeks later I get a call, more signatures needed, omg! I re-signed and asked for paper copies to be sent to me in the mail. The agent "said" she mailed them on march 13 but I've never received them, it is March 25th. When I complained to Paul Williams the funeral director , he claimed to want to fix the mistakes, and said he'd mail me copies himself . After discussing all this with my family , I decided there have been too many red flags and emailed harrells, many, many times and have still had zero response from them! I called Funeral Directors agency(finance co) snd cancelled the whole thing! They have handled this in such a sketchy, unprofessional way. I would never, ever recommend harrells funeral home! read more

Empathy. If there is one business where you need just a little bit of empathy, it is funeral services. We lost our 20 week old baby today and within 30 minutes of birth the nurse was telling us that they could not cremate him as he was 352 grams and they would only do up to 350 grams (I had a pet bird that weighed 2 grams as a kid). The nurse assures me that there is a weekly rotation of funeral homes that volunteer to cremate still born babies at no cost. We were so relieved. This week was Harrell. The lovely nurse gave me their number and I made my first phone call following the death of my child. The funeral director promptly called me back. I walked him through what happened and he listened quietly. When I was finished he said "I'm not sure what the nurse is talking about, we don't do that here" "Ronald McDonald house may be able to help you with $300 towards it". So I asked him what it would cost for a basic cremation of a 352 gram baby to which he replied "I'm not sure I would have to check my price list and it's in the office". Really!? So now we are ordering off the menu? I asked him for an estimate to which he replied "probably around $600, but again I need my price list". It's incredible what just a little bit of emotional intelligence and empathy can do especially if you're in a business with people who are traumatized. Whoever owns this funeral home should train their funeral directors to remove price list from their vocabulary. read more

I can't say enough good things about Harrell Funeral Home. Jerry Harrell helped us with arrangements after my husband's death. We already had a paid pre-need contract, which I highly recommend. This saved us several thousand dollars over what it would cost now. Jerry helped us with all the details and thought of a number of things that would both save us money and make things more personalized with pictures, a slideshow and even a beautiful wood registration book since my husband liked woodworking. He also helped us with the flowers, programs and obituary in newspapers and on Harrell's site. He walked us through how to get the military honors with the flag draped casket, taps, and presentation of the flag to me at the burial. He contacted the VA to get my husband's bronze portion of the headstone paid for. All the staff at Harrell's were caring, professional, and very helpful. Harrell Funeral homes has handled numerous funerals for our family since the early 1990's. They have always been patient, understanding, respective and accommodating. The services varied for each family member. We have used them for full formal services, cremation memorial services, and offsite (out of funeral home) services. There were a lot of mess ups with our 2 family's funerals that we just attended last week. First of all they put the wrong dress (Red) on our deceased and the plastic was showing on both arms. The next day another woman in the funeral home was wearing the red dress. just imagine if her family knew that there loved one's dress was already put on a dead body the day before. I do applaud the dedication and patience of everyone that works in this field. While it must not be easy to work with grieving families, they do it everyday, offering great comfort and direction. Having said that..I think I might have just witnessed the most unprofessional, insensitive, appaling behavior of anyone in any field. Here's the story...I was at the funeral services for a dear friend earlier this month. I was standing in the foyer, close to the entrance and the office. As the husband of the deceased entered the funeral home, he was greeted (by a staff member) not with a 'hello' or any word of comfort, but instead with a white envelope accompanied with the words 'here's the final statement'. I was mortified to say the least. and I'm sure the other people around were, also. The look on the widower's face told the whole story. Shame on Harrell's!!!!! read more
