J W Todd and Son Pork Butchers is one of two butchers on Clifton Street. It was established way…read moreback in 1884, which makes it 126 years old!!! That's some achievement! One of the main reasons that they have maintained such a successful business for so long is their commitment to quality and stocking meats that the locals and Cardiff as a whole appreciate. This includes carrying the meat products from regionally farmed animals such as, welsh beef, welsh lamb, free range poultry, and free range woodland pork, (the latter being their speciality). The level of service that you receive at this butchers is second to none, and acts as a real sweetener considering that the price tags are slightly higher than you would see in lesser establishments. Advice is liberally provided including how to select the right cut of meat for your needs, as well as recommendations on how to cook it. They will even suggest the best ways to store the meat, and get the most out of your purchase for your money... using the bones to make stock etc... This is a great family business!

Their gammon and cooked meats are second to none. Having a specialist independent pork butcher on my doorstep is a real privilege. I have lived in London and travelled all over the world but I think the quality of the food served here is comparable with anywhere in the country. When i first visited the floors were wooden and had sawdust on them. Clifton Street was a thriving shopping area then too. A lot has changed but Todd's has managed to stay reassuringly the same. All the produce is freshly made or cooked on the premises and includes ham, pork, gammon, sausages, faggots, dripping, chitlings pork pies, brawn and polony. They also sell cooked chicken, and my personal favourites tongue and salt beef. Perhaps someone should give Jamie Oliver a call...?

I am so glad to see this shop get such great reviews! They really deserve it and offer such a…read moredelicious range of sausages; like some sort of sausage pick and mix. They are also one of the cheapest meal options in St Nicks Market at around £2.80 for an amazing sausage baguette with leeks, onions, mustard and red (eugh) or brown (yay!) sauce. You can also mix and match your sausages, so if like me you can't choose between the lamb or pork (with cider and mustard) you can just get both. I think the pork wins it, but only by a nose (or a snout, weyhey, I thank you!). The man who owns the sausage shop is so lovely and welcoming. I have eaten a lot of his sausages (...er) and this has never changed; he's never had an off day being a nice guy. The sausage sandwiches/baguettes are quite hard to manoeuvre into your mouth, because the sausages are so big and juicy, so there is the option to have sausage and mash. This is a great option for lunch as it's so filling you are sorted until tea time.

If you like your sausage full of meat (fnarr fnarr) then this is the stall for you. Locally sourced…read morepork, beef and venison sausages with a range of herbs and spices. Ones to try:: Lucifer - whooo mamma hot and spicy but very tasty St Nicks 1743 - their own secret blend is actually my favourite - quite traditional pork and herbs but full of flavour Gloucestershire Old Spot - from the spottiest of pigs and a nice basic sausage if you don't like anything too fancy Works out pretty cheap considering the size and density of the sausage too. If you want to get stuffed by sausages (OK I'll stop now), then they also have an on-site bbq for a sausage and mash for lunch - for big appetites only!
