GREAT option for housing REALLY CLOSE to Mt. Rushmore! We stayed three nights in the Black Hills…read moreof South Dakota and this was our home SUH-WEET home late in the winter season. Now, staying IN a log cabin IS NOT something Southern Californians normally do, so this was our chance, wahoo! After looking at the "available" winter options (not all businesses are open year-round here), we found this place on an Internet search for lodging close to Mt. Rushmore. Our initial source was www.keystonechamber.com under "find lodging." Then confirmed it's likability on tripadvisor, where it sported a 4.5 stars with 22 reviews, which certainly raised some eyebrows. During the months of Oct.1 to May 1, price range is from $95-125.00 4 people, $5 for each additional person. Aw yeah, SOLD! There are 6 cabins, built in 2007, located on S. Fwy 16. We stayed in #2 Cabin, Sunset Ridge. The "office," a.k.a. the owner's house, overlooked the grounds. Friendly interaction to obtain our keys and that was the last time we saw them. Sunset Ridge cabin has 2 beds & 1 bath, with one Queen in a loft, and the other in a room. There's also a hide-a-bed sofa in the main living space. Wow factor for the young squires, besides being in a log cabin, was the porch swing! Wheee!!! The only cabin on our level with one :) Clean and cozy inside. Heat strips are smartly placed high, away from curious munchkins. An A/C unit is there but, unnecessary during our stay. Beds & pillows were comfortable. The kitchenette, with microwave, lil fridge, electric skillet, & sink, helped keep us on the go. The main question was would the traffic sounds from HWY 16 be irritating? It could barely be heard while we were awake, and after all the daily explorations, we were all too exhausted to even notice any commotion while the moon shined. Yup, outtie like a light at night! 25 miles from Rapid City and 3.6 miles from Mt. Rushmore, our location allowed easy access to all the interesting things in the area which were open at this time of the year. Despite this being a true log cabin, this wasn't "roughing" it at all. No complaints here! EASY recommendation ;) Just so you know, the office does have a DVD player available. We watched National Treasure 1 & 2, and North By Northwest during our stay (movies with Mt. Rushmore in them).

Bring EARPLUGS. so sad, cabins are directly on US Hwy 16, a 60mph highway. Had hoped the traffic…read morewould die down at night, alas, the 18 wheelers with their jack brakes BAPaBAPaBAPaBAP make it impossible. Could not sit on the cool porch swing and enjoy ourselves. Otherwise, the place is 5 stars. Really sweet young family trying to make a go of it. Need to disassemble the cabins and move them to the parking area on the top of their property away from the highway.

The entire reservation, check in and check out process was very clear. Leslie was great with communication throughout the stay and all of the instructions were clear in emails leading up to our reservation. I stayed at the Buck Haven Cabin which had one bedroom and a loft with another bed. It was perfect for my parents and I but can sleep up to six. The cabin was fully furnished and had plenty of towels, pillows and extra blankets. The entire cabin was comfortable, well decorated and temperature controlled. There is a key to use although you are provided a code for the key pad which we found easiest to use. There is a porch and deck with a grill, picnic table and a firepit with chairs. Unfortunately we did not utilize these during out two night stay last week. Firewood and smore kits are available for purchase. There is a great binder provided that gives suggestions on restaurants and activities in the area and even provides a little history on the property and family that owns it. The cabin was only about 15 minutes from Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse. In either direction you can find breweries, restaurants and other activities such as Bear Country, a candy store and off road vehicle rentals. We also visited Wall Drug and Badlands National Park which was approximately one hour away. The location was central which allowed us to visit a variety of spots. While in a great area, Freedom Ridge Cabins are not on a main road so there is plenty of privacy. They currently have four cabins but the property is well designed and you wouldn't even know you have neighbors unless you catch them outside. It is very quiet. Although we did not need additional items while we were there, the owners are on site and can provide what you need very quickly. I have nothing negative to say about my stay at Freedom Ridge Cabins. I highly recommend staying with them if visiting South Dakota. The price was reasonable and not much more than a stay in a regular, boring hotel room. Thank you for the wonderful experience and thank you for your service!

My extended family decided to have a vacation together this summer. The consensus location: The…read more(beautiful) Black Hills of South Dakota. I was in charge of finding a home big enough for us to rent. I did a lot of research and used one or two, especially VRBO. I chose the Gold Stone Lodge, owned by Deerview Bed & Breakfast. What a lovely place. Everyone enjoyed it. This place is west of Hill City, which is centrally located in the Black Hills. It is right next to the Mickelson Trail which is great for runners, hikers, casual walkers and bicyclists. Really beautiful in the early morning. A horde of wild turkeys was in our yard one evening. (I don't know what you call a large group of wild turkeys). We were within walking distance of a place where you can go horseback riding. This is the first time our family has done this: rent a home together. I mention that because it may have been a bit expensive perhaps but I'm not sure on that. Linda, the owner, and her husband are very friendly. One day Linda had to come and see if the last renters left an item but she called ahead to be sure that it was OK. You can check out pictures of this place on the VRBO web site: http://www.vrbo.com/128400. The home is very comfortable and Linda (who also runs Deerview B&B) seems to have thought of everything. She and her husband have some beautiful design features in the home. In the pictures you can see some of the stone work that her husband had done: masterful work! Also there are a number of stuffed animals done in two what I would call dioramas, one upstairs and one downstairs.

Black Hills Rentals is a collection of privately owned cabins of various sizes available for rent…read more Unlike many of the cabin rentals in the area, these cabins are spread out over several acres, not all bunched up together - so they are more quiet and secluded. Further unlike other rentals, they are located well off the main highway so road noise is not an issue. The owners are very friendly and gratious - easy to work with for reservations. The cabins are all relatively new, extremely clean and well equipped for any length stay. If you are looking for a truly tranquil and special experience in the Black Hills, it would be hard to go wrong with what these folks have to offer. Check out the selection of cabins on their website! I stayed at the Renegade cabin (about 4 miles west of Custer) and enjoyed its rustic feel and modern conveniences. It would be great for a couple or a young family of 3-4, but for larger parties I'd suggest some of their other properties. The kitchen is well equipped, a combination VCR/DVD player is available for entertainment, as is a small stereo with AUX and USB inputs for your CDs, iPod, etc. I was a bit concerned that this cabin was not shaded but I was amazed at how the logs insulate the inside. Even when the temps outside got up to 90 during the day, it remained comfortable inside, with ceiling fans to help keep the air moving around. It was the perfect Black Hills escape for me and I highly recommend them!

While visiting Crazy Horse and Mt. Rushmore, I wanted lodging that was different and unique, and this was perfect. I stayed in Cabin 1, so I can't vouch for the other cabins. Cabin 1 had a wonderful old, loved feel, yet was clean and tidy. It had a large main room with kitchenette, table, futon and VCR/DVD with satellite TV. The cozy bedroom had a comfortable bed with plenty of blankets. The bathroom was very small, yet fulfilled my needs. The property had wifi and an enclosed hot tub, although I did not use either. When I was there (Late May) it got cold at night, but the cabin stayed quite warm. The location is perfect, just south of Hill City, very close to both Crazy Horse and Mt. Rushmore, close to restaurants in Hill City. If you're visiting Crazy Horse or Mt. Rushmore, don't go to a sanitized cookie-cutter chain hotel. These cabins complete the experience of being in the Black Hills.
