Joy is amazing, in regards to both her work and her customer service. She is personable, honest, and genuinely cares about doing what's best for her customers. I went in for a haircut and color treatment, but after expressing my issues and wants, she suggested other, less costly measures. I was, and still am, more than grateful that she helped me figure out next steps that were right for me as opposed to my original plan, which would have further escalated some problematic issues (i.e, dry, frizzy hair). The atmosphere is cozy and clean. Joy is extremely friendly, and made the appointment fly by! I've only gone once, but I already know I'm going to be a very, very loyal client. In addition to all the good that Joy does, her prices are outstanding and more than fair. Nowadays, haircuts cost an arm and a leg, yet at Harmonies, the cost was $30-60 less than other places in the area (and outside of the area!). Yet the quality of service is unparalleled; I am extremely happy that she heard what I wanted, and delivered :). I also purchased some products from her, which, again, was surprisingly inexpensive. I also was the one to ask for products, as opposed to them being aggressively suggested--this is something I usually encounter at other salons. I was able to squeeze in a facial, brow wax and hair cut back to back which for this busy mom is the only way I could actually get all of those things done. So happy that Joy has been able to open her salon again. My hair was turning grey and my eyebrows looked like caterpillars. I just read the review from someone saying that you have to have a medical exam before entering the salon. That is completely untrue. I was told on the phone when I made the appointment that I would be asked a few screening questions and have my temperature taken before entering the salon. When I arrived for my appointment, I was greeted warmly by Doreen (as usual) and I think I was asked if I had a fever or cough recently, if I had been exposed to anyone with COVID-19 and if I had been out of the country. In no way is that considered as a medical exam. Give me a break. I also had a temperature thing pointed at my forehead and then I was invited in, business as usual (well except for face masks lol). I am so grateful the salon has safety measures in place during this national crisis. I needed my hair done and honestly, I would not go to a salon that was not practicing recommendations to keep this virus from spreading!! My wife and I went for hair cuts today and we were so excited after waiting for several months. Both of us had on our masks and met the staff in the parking lot as directed. They demanded we submit to a medical exam by their "office person" and she claimed it was required by the Board of Cosmetology. Turns out this salon has not read the rules and we are correct. You can ask questions but a medical exam and temperature check is *not* mandatory. The real problem is that one of the staff screamed at us (not joking) and she was insulting and very rude. Sad when people like this yell as if that will help and indicate they are right. We have asked the company to review their personal polices but so far no apology for their bad behavior. I suggest people find another salon. read more

I couldn't be more pleased to write this review. Harmony salon surpassed my expectations by delivering an excellent cut and color. But there is much more to the story as finding a great salon is no small feat, especially here on the coast. You see, I had a terrible experience recently at Mizu salon in HMB. They had cut and colored my hair without listening to what I was asking for and insisted that they knew best. They recommended that I needed low lights of very dark roots with a few highlights that made me look heroin unchic, kinda like a drowned rat. The cut was meh and didn't even look like they had done anything at all. Also, it was a very expensive and time consuming process and I had explained that I didn't want to spend a fortune, yet they insisted that I trust them and continued to upsell me to continue subsequent highlighting and buying product. Even though the atmosphere made me very uncomfortable, I still tried to work with them and went back two more times to try and achieve the look I wanted. The owner, Carla was condescending, snarky and woefully overpriced. They were not interested in listening to the customer, talked over me in terms that I was unfamiliar "stylist lingo" and micro-managed and treated their employees poorly. They were clearly intimidated by her overbearing attitude. The owner even constantly complained how her junior stylist were lazy millennials with no work ethic. Sad really, not a very good mentor!After several disappointing encounters and hundreds and hundreds of dollars later, I finally gave up. I decided to try Harmonies and I'm so so so glad I did. This is a great family owned business that has been around for many years. First I met with Joy who listened and explained style options in language I easily understood. She gave me exactly the cut I was looking for and put me at ease the entire time. Her stylist skills and interpersonal skills are exceptional and she honed right in on my needs. After receiving the best haircut I've ever gotten in 50 years on this planet, I met with Pat for color. I was already ecstatic because I finally felt like a million bucks. Pat did an amazingly painstaking job at highlights that achieved my goal of camouflaging my gray and giving me a beautiful bright youthful look. They were truly authentic, skilled and really listened and cared about me as a person. Can't get any better than that! Oh wait, you can. They are WAAAAAY more affordable than the snooty Mizu Salon. They delivered on all counts and are now my exclusive salon. They also do facials and many other services that I can't wait to try. I love love LOVE Harmonies Salon! The women over there are so nice and listens to EXACTLY what you want. After a bad hair coloring experience at Aqua Beauty about year ago, I decided to try Harmonies- a salon my mother tried (she had bad hair coloring experience too with Aqua and Mizu). I went to the salon, was greeted with warmth, asked how I wanted to ombré my hair, I showed some pictures, and talked about how I felt. Joy listened to me and talked me through a couple of options what I could do. She could tell what happened to my hair, & new the whole history behind before I could even tell her! She was so helpful & such a delight to have a conversation with. Atmosphere is very relaxed but you will have a good laugh with them! I came to Joy at Harmonies after a year long journey of hair mishaps since moving to the coast. She was able to give me the perfect A-Line! Finally! I wear it really long in the front and up to the hairline in the back. I've had past issues with improper layering/tapering and had almost given up. Joy listened to me carefully and gave me exactly what I wanted. I haven't even talked about the price yet. Only $40 for a haircut and blow-dry is below market average for Half Moon Bay and worth every penny! The best part though, is the very professional yet laid back vibe of the salon. I wish I could say I had a good experience at harmonies. I really gave them the benefit of the doubt on four separate occasions and was disappointed every time. The first time I came in was to tone down my brassy color. The gal tried twice to bring down the warmth but it looked exactly the same. ugh, oh well. The second time I was looking for a big change, I wanted blond ends (ombre-ish) and a "Rachel" like hair cut. They did not book enough time to do the whole process, which resulted in a hurried application of color and a hair cut that looked nothing even remotely like what I had asked for (even though I had show her a couple pictures of what I wanted). I waited a couple days and then called back to have the cut redone. When I got there and showed her what I wanted, she said (very accusingly) that she didn't have enough time to cut my hair (again?). She was clearly overwhelmed and annoyed, and I certainly didn't want her to do my hair with a bad attitude, so I agreed to come in later. I came in a couple hours later and we again discussed the cut I wanted thoroughly, and she then realized that she was going to have to cut out basically all the color she just did a couple days ago to accomplish this look. I felt like this could have been avoided if she had listened to what I wanted the first time, but now I had wasted a lot of money on something I didn't want. So she starts cutting my hair and its starting to look like what I want, finally! She's about finished and she says, "I'm going to go through with the razor in the front." Sounds good to me, I love razor cuts! She turned my cute shag haircut into a MULLET. NOOOOOOOO!!!!!! I spent a few weeks in hats before going to another salon in HMB and having this disaster fixed. Harmonies is fantastic and Joy (the owner) is the best! I have been going to Joy for about 15 years now. I left for Boston for four years, then back. Then I left for Houston for a year and a half and am now back. I have tried many, many other salons and always come back to Joy. She is able to really listen to what I want. Even if its not the latest fashion trend, she gives me exactly what I ask for. In fact, it always turns out better than what I imagined. The color is spot on and super natural looking and the cut is very flattering. The location is great, right in the quaint downtown area. I currently drive 50 miles to see her.
